Short-Term Running Goals:

Now that I'm (almost for sure) done having all the babies, I'm working on building consistency and seeing how fast I can get in my old age. ;)

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'd like to be a healthy and relatively injury-free runner for the rest of my life.

Personal:

I'm married to Eric (Faceless Ghost on the blog) and we have very active daughters and one dog. I have a PhD in sociology and demography, and I'm incredibly grateful to have work that is meaningful and that builds on my academic experience. I run because it makes me feel strong and it helps to keep the crazy away (there is a long history of abuse and mental illness in my extended family).

On the treadmill at the gym. I've never been into the Bachelor/Bachelorette shows, but somehow the new one makes the treadmill time go quickly. Alternated .5 walking at 4, .5 running at 6.5.

I figured out the GI stuff (for now), so I think that was what was causing the random pains, but I still get some weird tightness.  The Internet makes it sound like it's the fake contractions, and it seems like it's normal and stuff, even at 18 weeks, but it's unnerving. I'm thinking about switching to swimming and cycling. But I don't want to be a swimmer or a cyclist...

ok, well first a congrats is in order! CONGRATS!! I've been so bad I haven't checked up on you forever and didn't even know. Unfortunately, I'm with your doc. If you are getting those pains (even if they are GI related) while running you should stop. It was one thing that my doc told me when I was running prego as well. They may be just GI pains, but is it worth the risk to find out? I'm not trying to discourage the running, believe me! Anyone who knows me knows that I am a strong proponent of running while prego. But, especially with your first you should take caution with those kinds of things. I didn't run until my 4th pregnancy and by then I and the doc knew what was 'normal' for me and what was not.

I will be the first to admit how hard it is to change out of the 'runners' mentality! You are used to pushing your body to the limits and loving it, but now is not that time. You have to change and start listening to your body, it is in control and it is doing FAR more important things than getting ready for a race. There will always be more races and more years to train for them. You will only be prego a few times in your life, be able to enjoy it. Run what you can, but don't over-do it, listen carefully to what your body is telling you. Shut it out on your next race after baby :)

You don't have to be a swimmer or a spinner, just take a break from the TM and running and get your body used to working out and growing a baby. You'll be able to come back! Once a runner...always a runner. Keep on doing what you can. If you can run without the pain, do it! If not, chill and walk on an incline (I would do like 10% incline) it is almost as good! Take pride right now in the fact that you are growing a new life. I had to not run for 3 1/2 months or more of my pregnancy and then was able to come back and run a 1/2 marathon at 7 months, 35 weeks and 37 weeks. So, don't despair. Your body will reward you with the most beautiful prize ever :)

long story short: There is a time and season for everything. Enjoy where you are in life right now!

Thanks Rachel. It's pretty discouraging to think about having to stop, so I appreciate the idea that it's possible to get to a point where I feel okay about it.

Ok, I feel like an idiot, I didn't know you were pregnant.

So with my last pregnancy I wanted to run, but at 10 weeks had severe bleeding and was put on bed rest for 8 weeks. It was so hard to go from running every day to just laying there. But my baby girl miraculously made it here and is perfectly healthy. If you can't run through this pregnancy you'll be ok. I ended up walking every day and really enjoyed it. It took a while, but running came back to me. And now I'm faster than I've ever been. Good luck, I know it isn't easy!

Carina - That's so scary! I'm glad things turned out okay. Thanks for the encouragement.
