Short-Term Running Goals:

Now that I'm (almost for sure) done having all the babies, I'm working on building consistency and seeing how fast I can get in my old age. ;)

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'd like to be a healthy and relatively injury-free runner for the rest of my life.

Personal:

I'm married to Eric (Faceless Ghost on the blog) and we have very active daughters and one dog. I have a PhD in sociology and demography, and I'm incredibly grateful to have work that is meaningful and that builds on my academic experience. I run because it makes me feel strong and it helps to keep the crazy away (there is a long history of abuse and mental illness in my extended family).

My calves are a little sore, but other than that so far I feel surprisingly good after Saturday. I did notice on our tiny hike yesterday that my right achilles hurts a bit when going downhill, so I've been thinking about my shoes. On real downhills (like coming down some of the streets perpendicular to 11th avenue or that one little stretch toward the beginning of the Des News 10k) sometimes I try to just kind of let go and go - no thinking about form or anything, just kind of pounding down and hoping that my legs catch me and that I don't have to try to stop suddenly. It's pretty hard on my quads but a nice rest aerobically as long as I remember to breathe. So I wonder if my achilles was sore from Saturday because of the Altra/downhill combination? I run between the midfoot and the forefoot but go more toward the midfoot when I'm going down a steeper hill. Am I going to hurt myself if I try to pound down a real hill in flat shoes? What if I heel strike down the hill to kind of put on the brakes?

Anyway, I procrastinated my run until right after dinner and some brownies. My legs felt heavy and my tummy felt rumbly and I want to try last Tuesday's run again tomorrow, so I just kept it to 2 miles.

I've never run in zero drop shoes so I don't have any advice there :/ nice work getting some miles in glad you're feeling good after Saturday!!

good idea on the 2 miles on a full belly...and a big run tomorrow. I'm SO bad with foot striking stuff, I won't be of any help with those questions :(

hmmm, I would say that your achilles is hurting from the combo of both. There isn't a ton of support in the Altra (I have them so I can say that). I would say be careful running hills in them for now if you're feeling kind of prone to hurting that area. Kind of scary.

Hope those brownies were delicious!

Don't worry about heel striking on the downhills, if needed. However, what will help is shortening your stride and increasing your cadence. It will reduce the impact on the feet and achilles.

What is most likely causing the soreness is the combination of zero drop shoes and a need to strengthen your calves. Achilles issues are more commonly a result of weaker calves (I get soreness frequently too). Not to say you're weak, but comparatively that tends to be the trend. I have to focus a lot on strengthening my calves, for that very reason.
