Short-Term Running Goals:

Now that I'm (almost for sure) done having all the babies, I'm working on building consistency and seeing how fast I can get in my old age. ;)

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'd like to be a healthy and relatively injury-free runner for the rest of my life.

Personal:

I'm married to Eric (Faceless Ghost on the blog) and we have very active daughters and one dog. I have a PhD in sociology and demography, and I'm incredibly grateful to have work that is meaningful and that builds on my academic experience. I run because it makes me feel strong and it helps to keep the crazy away (there is a long history of abuse and mental illness in my extended family).

Since I didn't run in the morning I made an appointment for Elliott at the AF Gold's child care at a time when they said there would be the fewest children. I guess fewest means about a hundred, but when I dropped her off they said that a bunch of the kids were about to leave. There were two adults there - one who seemed to be occupied at a desk, and one who was hanging out in the play area. They said I could put Elliott wherever I wanted, so I moved an exersaucer into the play area and left instructions for them to call me if she cried for more than a couple of minutes since she's not a crier (their normal policy is 15 minutes). When I came back 30 minutes later there were still a hundred (maybe 100-5) kids, there was only the adult at the desk, and Elliott was crying in the saucer (and who keeps a baby in a saucer for a half an hour?). The desk girl looked at me and said, "She did great! She was happy the whole time." Seriously?

Lessons learned: wake up earlier, and no more AF gym child care.

I wonder if they have to be licensed as a 'day care' because of the short duration. If so, I believe state regulations require a 1/5 or 1/8 ratio of adults to children. Regardless, that is very very wrong. At the most they should have 1/10. They are really setting themselves up for a monster lawsuit if a child gets hurt.

The "100 kids" was some hyperbole, but there were many.

Actually, there is a license that they can get where if the parent is on site they don't have any ratios to adhere to. Our 'little gym' that shut down (for other reasons) were able to do that so we didn't have to make reservations after a while. It was nice :) BUT, I also trusted and knew the staff and my child and the other kids - it was afterall, the 'little gym' (think Cheers type environment). So, who knows. Welcome to gym day care! Still sounds like a pretty sad place to leave a kid though, especially if she is crying and no one is attending to her needs...even after you walk in!! Those are the times you're grateful you can wake up early (which are few and far between for me at least).

As a father, this really made me mad. All they had to do was pull her out of the saucer and let her romp on the floor and she would have been so happy.

I never liked their daycare. I know it's a drive, but I swear the daycare on 800N is slower than a snail right now. I went on Tuesday night and they showed me the list (3/4 of one page) of how many kids were there that entire day... Sorry it was such a bad experience.
