Short-Term Running Goals:

Now that I'm (almost for sure) done having all the babies, I'm working on building consistency and seeing how fast I can get in my old age. ;)

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'd like to be a healthy and relatively injury-free runner for the rest of my life.

Personal:

I'm married to Eric (Faceless Ghost on the blog) and we have very active daughters and one dog. I have a PhD in sociology and demography, and I'm incredibly grateful to have work that is meaningful and that builds on my academic experience. I run because it makes me feel strong and it helps to keep the crazy away (there is a long history of abuse and mental illness in my extended family).

It was too hot to run outside by the time Eric was home and I was on a break from feeding Baby, so I went to the gym for some treadmill time. Three slow miles, and then walking for a half mile to stretch out a bit.

Every day this week I've wanted to run, but it's been really easy to find excuses. We're still struggling with the breastfeeding so the early morning feeding lasts around 2 hours (but the feeding-pumping-feeding routine must be working, because yesterday Baby was 7 pounds 6.5 ounces (2 pounds above her birth weight)), and I never feel like getting up an hour or two later to run before Eric leaves. By the time I can leave Baby with Eric in the evening I'm so tired that I just want to go to sleep. But there are tons of people on this blog who have babies and who still get their runs in, so hopefully I'll be able to suck it up and do better next week.

I think the "carving out the time" is one of the hardest things about running (and exercising in general).

You can only do the best you can do Catherine, try to ease into as much of a routine as you can. Most importantly, enjoy!

Thanks Bonnie. And thanks for the example you set of getting so many great runs in even though you're busy with so many things!

You must remember everyone and every baby is different. My baby was my fourth and my best nurser by far! He could eat anywhere well and quickly :) So, I only had to grab him out of his crib lay in bed with him-switch-then I was up and ready to get out. The fact that you are working SO hard to get the nursing down (especially with a preemie) is phenomenal!! People don't understand how horribly exhausting it all can be! Those seven pounds didn't come easy. Don't feel like you have to 'suck it up' and do it. One of my favorite sayings, given to me by a FAR wiser man than myself, is "We are NOT runners; we are people who run." Running will be here tomorrow, next week, and next year. BUT, little, sweet, tiny, newborn, baby Elliot will only be around a VERY short time. Seriously you blink and they hate you :)

Like Bonnie said, enjoy. If you can't enjoy running right now...don't! If you can't enjoy Elliot without running...run! :) We all know what a drug running is and you've been deprived SO long that it's hard not to want to get back into it, I think we all can understand that one!

Just know that we will all be here supporting you whether you run just .10 to not get a goose egg or 100 miles. One of my favorite thing about the blog is the support you get whether or not you're running. Even if you just started posting cute pictures of Elliot every day we'd all just sit and coo over them and visit the blog to see her :)

You couldn't help but stay active and run, so know it will be here regardless. Elliot right now is fleeting. There is a time and a season for everything and we always wish for days gone by, so try to enjoy what you've got. Run your running...don't let it run you! Good luck with the delicate balancing act. It is SO not easy...even if others make it look that way.
