Short-Term Running Goals:

Now that I'm (almost for sure) done having all the babies, I'm working on building consistency and seeing how fast I can get in my old age. ;)

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'd like to be a healthy and relatively injury-free runner for the rest of my life.

Personal:

I'm married to Eric (Faceless Ghost on the blog) and we have very active daughters and one dog. I have a PhD in sociology and demography, and I'm incredibly grateful to have work that is meaningful and that builds on my academic experience. I run because it makes me feel strong and it helps to keep the crazy away (there is a long history of abuse and mental illness in my extended family).

I felt super dumpy after missing two days at the gym. Plus, last night my muscles were doing this really weird thing where if I flexed them (like if I pointed my foot hard or tried to flex my calf) they'd seize up and hurt. And then I was all antsy during the night, so maybe my muscles started to atrophy or something.

So tonight I decided that I was going to run. I walked on the 12% for a mile, and then I ran a mile very slowly. No tightness. Then I walked at 12% for half a mile, and then I ran another mile. I sped it up after the first half and got some tightness, so then I went back to the very slow run.

Our 20-week appointment is on Tuesday, so I'm going to ask about the tightness again (again). It doesn't at all hurt (though sometimes I'm sore like an hour later), and running just feels really good in the rest of my body. And it's going to be warmer outside soon.

*Super* dumpy.

That tightness during your run is pretty natural. My wife has talked about that before. If it was a stabbing pain that would be different. Always good to ask the doctor though.

Good luck on finding out what you're having. It's super exciting.

Thanks Jun. That's helpful. I'm never sure what's normal or not.

Sounds like a charlie horse kind of pain to me, At night sometimes I'd get those mild charlie horses that just would grip and hold on for a while. Do you have a foam roller? I would roll out my calves and that would help a ton! Also, just standing on a stair and stretching the calves made it a ton better.

I do remember feeling like my calves were constantly tight while running sometimes, I think it has to do with the added weight we're dragging around prego and blood flow issues (whether too much or too little I don't know..) either way, good luck at the dr! Can't wait to hear what you are having!!

Thanks Rachel. The tightness during the running is in the uterus region (I guess...it stretches, right? Does it also move?), but I'll definitely try the foam roller for the calf stuff.

do you have a belly band? I was about 24 weeks-ish when I started running and I used one the whole time I ran prego and didn't have tightness in the belly (that I noticed anyway). Maybe your ab's are working hard to keep the 'bump' tucked in and secure while you run and getting the belly band would help relieve some of it? If you need one, I'd be happy to send mine off to you! :)

You may already know this, but your legs seizing is totally pregnancy related. It's usually caused from the expanding uterus putting pressure on your blood vessels running from your legs to your heart.

When I ran as a prego gal, my stomach also tightened. It's kind of like a contraction. It's not a big deal but they do have those belts you can put on around your stomach to help. No worries :)

Thanks Lily. I figured it was because of pregnancy, but I didn't know why.

We got a belt a few weeks ago (I knew about them because Melody always wore one when I ran with her), but it didn't quite fit yet. Maybe it's time to try it again. It makes sense that it would help.

Oh the good old Braxton Hicks and Charlie Horses. My DR said not to worry about the BH - they are totally harmless and you don't need to back off unless they make you uncomfortable. I can't stand the feeling, so I always start to walk when I get them. As for the CH- have your hubby rub your arches and calves out when they start to tighten up. The worst is when they happen at 2am... Welcome to the wonderful world of pregnancy!
