Yes this is my first entry and yes my race was awhile ago, but it took me a little while to figure this all out.

I recently ran a half marathon in St. George.  I have ran 5 of them and this one was by far the funnest!  It was my first time running with someone and I think that made all the difference.

It was my slowest, which I was not happy about, but my friend knee was really hurting her so we had to slow down and I didn't feel like I could leave her(it was her first).

I am gearing up to start training for Grandmas Marathon in june.  It is a marathon I tried running before but had to bailout at mile 19 because I was pregnant and wasn't feeling right. It has always bugged me that I have never finished so I am going back to finished what I started!!!

I am just reading this, but I have to commend you for sticking with your friend on this race---that is what running is about! It is not about the times but the friendship and the camaraderie. I have yet to run Painters for myself but have thoroughly enjoyed pacing others and helping them with their first half marathon experience!

No running today...I need to light the fire and get going.  I start training for Grandmas Marathon which is June 19th.  I am really worried about staying motivated!  I have been reading other peoples blogs and there are some amazing people out there!  You all inspire me.  I am not a very good self motivator!  I hope I can get some of it from all of you!

Started my training for my marathon in June.  I ran 3 miles at lunch time.  I do so much better running in the afternoon than in the early morning.  I'm glad I have opptions.

Welcome to the blog! Good luck with your training. I'm impressed you have 5 kids and are going to make the time to train for a marathon. I hope you are rewarded with feeling great and reaching your goals!

Callie - I would recommend following the principle: "Diligence before ambition". When followed, it leads to miraculous performances. When not, the fruit are blow ups and injuries.

Switch from the marathon to the half if you can. Running a marathon without proper preparation is not good, and there is not enough time for proper preparation for a June marathon. Yes, some popular running publication may talk about how runner so and so trained for a month and ran a sub-4:00 marathon, but the truth of the matter is that somebody with a moderate level of talent could run a sub-4:00 with no training at all. So do not fall for that "logic".

Speaking of false logic, if I worked for a marketing department of a tobacco company and my purpose in life was to sell tobacco, I would find a guy with 2:10 talent that smokes and have him run a marathon while still smoking. He would run around 2:50, and I would make a big deal about that. False marketable logic is an instrument in the hands of conspiring men in the last days.

Marathon is not something we train for like a student preparing for an exam. Rather, the ability to run the marathon at a good pace is a fruit of consistent training effort that spans several years. The correct approach to the marathon (assuming you want more than just a finisher medal) is build a solid training foundation first. Run 6 days a week gradually increasing your distance. 5 days a distance that it takes you 24 hours to fully recover from, on the 6th go twice that distance. Race short races frequently to observe the effects of your training and make necessary adjustments. Get your 5 K performance to where it is at least the pace of your dream goal in the marathon. Then bring your 10 K there. Then the half. Once you can race a half at a good pace, sign up for the marathon.

From calliej on Thu, Feb 18, 2010 at 15:25:34 from 97.126.145.218

Sasha, I appreciate your counsel and totally understand what you are saying. Maybe I set my goal a little high, but I do feel that I can run a marathon. I have ran 5 half marathons 2 5k's and 1 10k, 1 marathon and my 2nd marathon was cut short @ mile 19 because I was pregnant and was not feeling right. That is one big reason why I am running this marathon, to finish it. I feel that I have some experience in running and am really excited to do this.

I will take your training advice and hope one day I will get that time I know I can get in my half marathons.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Feb 18, 2010 at 16:12:40 from 192.168.1.1

There is a difference between "survive a marathon" and "run a marathon". Most people who claim to have run a marathon only survived it. There is only one requirement to surviving a marathon - be willing to be in pain for a few hours. No prior training is needed, and a few months is plenty. Running a marathon is much more difficult - you have to train for a while, longer than a few months.

I believe the excessive aura surrounding the marathon does most runners a disservice because they feel they need to run in it in order to be validated as a runner, and thus often do so inadequately prepared. They are barely in shape to race a 5 K, and they are jumping into the marathon. Thus we miss some important principles of developing as a runner. The fruit of such neglect is slower times, and higher rate of injury.

In our culture of wild cheers and expectations it takes courage to say: "I am not yet ready for the marathon". I consider it a sign of maturity when a runner wants to improve his half PR by 10 minutes as a prerequisite for trying the marathon. It more noble to run a shorter distance that you are fit to race than to jog a longer distance that you are only fit to survive.

From calliej on Thu, Feb 18, 2010 at 21:31:59 from 97.126.145.218

I agree that the commercial side of running can give people who are not ready to run a marathon a false idea that they can, and yes that can be very dangerous. I am not a world class runner, I never will be, but I don't think that that is a good reason to lower my goals. I am running this marathon for me, not for the time or the medal, but to fulfill a dream of running this marathon that both my Grandfather and father ran for 13 years. It is something that I know I can do and want to do. I think I am a good runner and am preparing for it properly. I joined this blog thinking it would give me encouragement and support, I have seen a lot of it on others. I hope that you can be excited for me and support me.

Hooray for the blog finally working! This blog is such a motivation!

I am excited to see you achieve your goals. You can do it! Day by day and run by run you will get there! Don't let anything get in your way!

We need to come up with a race slogan and need to get chuck to join the blog!

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Feb 19, 2010 at 11:40:14 from 192.168.1.1

Sorry, but I did not create the blog to support runners who start training for a marathon 4 months before the race. I will support you in training for a marathon properly, though.

From calliej on Fri, Feb 19, 2010 at 12:13:04 from 97.126.145.218

I can see how you might think I have just started training by my comments, but I haven't. I have been working towards this marathon since my last child was born 2 years ago. This last summer was a great one with two half marathons. I just ran the St. George half just last month and felt the best I have ever felt.

You have a lot of experience and knowledge of running so you are just looking out for fellow runner...awesome, but maybe you need all the fact before you start putting someone down.

I do have to say in a funny way your comments have made me more determined than ever to work hard and well, show that I can do this and do it to my expectations not anyone else's.

Good luck with your goals and thanks for creating this community. Despite your negative comments I know I will get the support I need from fellow bloggers.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Feb 19, 2010 at 12:44:30 from 192.168.1.1

The facts are that you have 4 months before the race, your daily run is 3 miles, and you skip days. To be ready for the marathon in 4 months your current daily run at this point needs to be at least 7, and it needs to happen without skipping. The problem is you cannot just say, I am going to bring myself where I am supposed to be and just do it. If you do, you will likely get injured or overtrained.

So even with the best possible training between now and June, you will be ready for a reasonable half, but you will not be ready to race a marathon. You will survive it probably in around 5 hours, then will take a while to recover, and then a similar cycle will repeat.

I would recommend you study Carolyn's blog in detail (http://cocarolyn.fastrunningblog.com). She went from a 2:07 half to 3:45 marathon in a year by doing things right. She probably could have dragged herself through a marathon much earlier, but instead she gradually build up her mileage and patiently waited until she was ready, and was rewarded with a Boston Qualifier with room to spare in her first marathon attempt.

From calliej on Fri, Feb 19, 2010 at 14:04:45 from 97.126.145.218

I see what you are saying. Having 5 children is my main priority in life. If that means I may have to miss a day once in a blue moon than that's ok. Everyone runs for different reasons. You want to be in the olympics and I hope you make it. I find peace in my running and it is a hobby for me. I can't run like you and that is not my goal. I will never run Boston, I don't want. I don't run marathon's to win them I run them because I enjoy the journey. If you feel that I am wasting my time than that your problem.

These blog have a handicap in them, and that is you don't know me and I don't know you. You have a few lines of info about me and 4 entries and you have made your conclusions about me and my running abilities. You're right, I won't run Boston, so what. But that doesn't mean I can't reach my goals. I've run marathons before, I know what is required of me and I know I can do it.

From Aaron Kennard on Fri, Feb 19, 2010 at 14:31:22 from 174.51.250.151

Sasha-I am shocked by your negativity here. I have never seen you be so discouraging to someone and I'm trying to figure out why you seem bent on dragging Callie down when she has just barely joined the blog and is excited about running.

Callie-I think you have a great attitude. With a lot of dedication and good balance, training for a marathon will be very enriching for you. Just keep taking it one day at a time and work towards your goal. If you do start to have an injury slow you down then that will just have to be something you deal with and be humble enough to alter your race plans if needed. We all deal with setbacks, no matter if we're elite or novice. But I do think if you are smart and take good care of yourself there is a very good chance you can get to Grandma's injury free and find joy in the journey. Good luck!

Day 6 of training:  8 miles, felt strong

Had a great run this morning!  It was a beautiful day and a great temp.  My husband was being extra supportive and came running with me.  That was a real treat!  I felt really good the whole run.  I was expecting to feel it on mile 7 but I felt great all the way to the end.

I am a music person and at about mile 2 my mp3 player died.  I stressed at first.  I thought, how am I going to run without my music.  Well, it is what it is and ran without.  I have to say it was actually really pleasant.  I really enjoyed it!

SLOW!!! I still have 2-3 weeks of no running. Then I can gradually start to run. So 10 minutes every other day for a week. Then 15 minutes every other day and so on. I have to be careful with coming back or I can refracture it or even break it.

I hope I am able to run enough for Grandmas. I LOVE trials!

I only ran 3miles on the treadmill today.  I couldn't find my watch and wanted to track my speed so the treadmill was a good option, but to be honest, I was soo tired I couldn't get up this morning to go run at the rec. center.  My 2 year old and 3 year old were up all night last night.  My 3yr. was up through out the whole night experiencing really bad growing pains. At least I think that is what is going on.  He kept grabbing his legs and saying they were hurting.  I feel so bad for him.  It kept he and I up all night .  My 2 yr. is dealing with who knows what.  He keeps me on my toes and yes up in the night.

I am going for 5 tomorrow, with or without sleep.  Lets hope for sleep!

From Toby on Wed, Feb 24, 2010 at 15:46:36 from 216.194.124.36

From Tracy on Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 07:48:43 from 173.23.75.96

I can usually get 500 miles on my shoes if I'm lucky. Sometimes way less. I can usually tell if I start to feel any pain in my lower legs that it is time for new shoes.

So oh my goodness gracious do you need some new shoes.

From CookieLegs on Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 11:26:12 from 155.101.152.105

Have to second Tracy's opinion. Most of the time my feet or legs start hurting, I get new shoes, and the pain goes away. (Sometimes I think I put more mileage on my shoes than I realize because I also use them for walking, chasing after kids, etc.)

Other common causes of pain for me is if I increase my training too fast, or if I run on steeply cambered surfaces. (i.e., the "slant" at the side of the road). (Running on cambered surfaces create lots of problems for me.)

Anyhow, I hope the pain goes away - it's hard to train when you have the mental motivation, but your body hurts!

From calliej on Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 12:07:08 from 97.126.145.218

Thanks for the shoe advice. I think I will be buying some new shoes.

A running friend throw out the thought of it being a stress fracture. I don't know though, because if feels good when I stretch my calf and ankle and rub it with ice. I can actually touch right where it hurts. Have any of you had stress fractures?

Callie-I have had experience with this in the past. Does the pain go away to any degree after you warmup?

From steve ash on Fri, Feb 26, 2010 at 20:54:40 from 174.52.96.106

My instinct tells me your tendons and such just aren't strong enough yet and this will take more time and less impact overall. I had similar issues when I first started out. You were smart to do what you did though.

From calliej on Fri, Feb 26, 2010 at 20:59:48 from 97.126.145.218

Steve Ash-It does somewhat. I will sometimes feel it at the bottom of my knee as well. I have been experimenting with my forum and I wonder if I just irritated something. I have stayed off it and today the pain is way less. I am praying that it is not a stress fracture. Would love to hear what you think on it.

From steve ash on Sat, Feb 27, 2010 at 17:03:54 from 174.52.96.106

If it goes away, chances are it's only inflamed. But if it does not and it's very local in the pressure point area it could be.. a stress fracture. Hard to tell then without tests. It can develop into a stress fracture if gets worse however. Be aware of that.

It sounds like compartment issues so RICE is a good thing to do.

That is; Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation..

From steve ash on Sat, Feb 27, 2010 at 17:05:21 from 174.52.96.106

If you run at all, grass or very soft treadmill and very little at that. Elliptical might be better perhaps.

From Kelli on Sat, Feb 27, 2010 at 19:42:32 from 71.219.89.82

You will be good, just be smart about it---and we know you are. Do not run until you are ready, just keep cross training and smiling!

It is a good thing that I have Toby by my side.  She helps me push myself and keeps me going.  I forgot my swim bottoms, so I had to swim in my workout capris.  That was weird and didn't feel right, and I know I looked like a dork!  Oh well, I'm not in it for the fashion.

It was a really good workout.  I had a hard time getting a good breath in while in the pool.  I hope that gets better over time.

My shin is feeling pretty good and I am hoping by the end of next week I can run on it.

Found this in a magazine:

Running Rules of thumb

1. If you see a porta potty with no line, use it.  Even if you don't need to

2. If you have to ask yourself, Does this driver see me? The answer is no.

3. If you have to ask yourself, Are these shorts too short? The answer in yes.

4. 1 glazed doughnut = 2 miles

5. You rarely regret the runs you do; you almost always regret the runs you skip.

6. Not everyone who looks really fast is, and not everyone who looks slow really is.

7. Nobody has ever watch Chariots of fire from beginning to end.  Not even the people who made it.

8. You can never have too many safety pins on your gym bag.

9. Running any given route in the rain makes you feel 50 percent more hard-core than covering the same route on a sunny day.

10. If you care even a little about being a jogger versus a runner, you're a runner.

From Smooth on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 19:37:34 from 174.23.198.220

:) #5 applies to me and #6 is so true!

Oh yeah, I always cringe inside when someone tells me: "I see you out jogging all the time." May be I should have a shirt printed: "I am NOT a jogger."

From Kelli on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 23:38:21 from 71.219.89.82

Hmmmm, I am a jogger and proud of it!

But, I have to attest to #1 on the list. How many times have I skipped the lineless porta potty only to lose 5 minutes in the race 3 miles later when i just could not hold it any longer????

And, of course, #5. We all know that one is the truest of all. Oh wait, maybe #4 is. I am constantly thinking about how many miles I would have to run if I ate the cookie or the ice cream or the chocolate (not that it stops me from eating it, or 5, but at least I think about it!!!)

THANKS FOR SHARING!!!!

Well, went to the doctors this morning and yes it is a stress fractures.  CRAP!!!  I am really frustrated, but the Dr. was really awesome!  He has more confidence in me doing the marathon than I do.  I can't let this get the best of me.  He really made me feel good about still going for it.

I wanted this to be a defining year for me in my running and it still will be.  I have always has a determination problem and this will help me kick that handicap.  I am very motivated to show myself that I can do this and that I am a strong person.

I caught it in it's early stages and he said that that was good.  He is saying 6 weeks.  It also helps to hear my husband say, you can do this....don't let it stop you.

I need to remember to "find joy in the journey"

Well dang it!

But you can survive 6 weeks.

However, if you take of 6 weeks from now, that only leaves you 9 1/2 weeks until Grandma's marathon. I don't think that 9 1/2 weeks is enough to train for a marathon, especially coming off of 6 weeks of injury. I don't mean to be a nay sayer and I think you can definitely do a marathon at some point. I just think it might be smart to not try to push for Grandma's this year.

From calliej on Wed, Mar 03, 2010 at 15:12:40 from 97.126.145.218

Carolyn- those are my thoughts as well. I have a lot of thinking to do. I only have 4 more weeks off of it because I have been off of it for 2 already. I don't have to make any decisions until May. Thanks for the words of advice. :)

From Toby on Wed, Mar 03, 2010 at 16:04:55 from 216.194.124.36

Hope the kids sleep better tonight!

I think your right! Do you think we could sell our numbers on ebay?

From Kelli on Wed, Mar 03, 2010 at 17:50:48 from 71.219.89.82

Hmmmm.....I know plenty of people who have run marathons on even less training (me for example) BUT I am not saying that is a good idea. I think it all depends what exercises you can do with the stress fracture. Many people pool run and do just fine. I guess it depends on HOW you want this marathon to go. If your heart is not set on it, then, heck yeah, do not do it! But, you could always go and run/walk it and just have a GREAT time. Not everyone has to win!!!

That is just my two cents, and I am sure it will be UNPOPULAR! I just wanted to say that you do not necessarily have to RUN the marathon, it all just depends on what kind of outcome you want.

Do be careful this 6 weeks and get all healed up, no matter what you decide to do!

From Nan Kennard on Fri, Mar 05, 2010 at 22:48:48 from 174.51.250.151

Oh NO!! I'm so sorry to hear that!

I agree with Carolyn, Grandmas is not a great idea this year. I have been a very competitive runner my whole life and I wouldn't even do a marathon on only 9 weeks of running. I've decided to pull out of Boston because of my injury too. STINKS, but it is what it is. In the meantime, follow Toby's example and get some good cross training in. Nothing stopping you from getting into great shape now which will make running that much more enjoyable when you can do it again. Happy healing!

From calliej on Fri, Mar 05, 2010 at 23:07:30 from 97.126.145.218

Thanks for all the advice! I have decided not to run Grandmas. It is not the way i wanted to come back to this race. Last time I ran it it was not a good experience, I was pregnant and it didn't go well and I do not want a repeat of it. I might try for Top of Utah... we will see how recovery goes.

I totally have a great example in Toby and will follow her example.

I wish I could help you, but I don't know. If you think it might be the flip flops, try wearing other shoes during the day and see if that makes a difference.

From RAD on Sat, Mar 06, 2010 at 22:37:42 from 67.172.229.125

Callie, just ran across your blog (blog stalking recent entries :) ). As a recovering SFist I feel slightly qualified to answer. My PT said to make sure I got the gel insoles in ALL my shoes while recovering. There were days I would be on my feet cleaning all day (in socks) and it would ache afterward. So, keep off your feet (if/when you can, I know mothers never get to!) and wear gel insoles or anything to keep impact down when you can.

It took me about 8-9 weeks of NO impact exercise until I had no pain for a week which was enough to start on a 'back to WALKING' program. I'm now just starting my 'back to running' program an additional 3 weeks later - with continued NO pain. However, my fracture is in my hip (femoral condyle) and I'm pregnant, baby takes everything! So, it takes a while, but do what you can to stay off of it and even just seeing a PT once and getting a plan of how to recover when the pain is gone would be VERY beneficial. No/little guess work. Mine lets me call with questions instead of making a $25 appt for answers.

Either way...there is my 2 cents about recovering from a SF, yes the pain is normal (still) and the flip-flops probably did do it. Take or leave it (this is my first time around with one, so I'm not an expert). Good luck with recovery, it takes a while, but it's worth it in the end to not re-fracture, which is your greatest enemy now for the next 3-5 months! (or so I'm told)

From Toby on Sun, Mar 07, 2010 at 00:12:00 from 216.194.124.36

I bought a pair of slip on Merrill clogs (at Cabelas) with insoles to wear around the house. They make a HUGE difference. I am going to get a pair of insoles for my running shoes too!

I think lunges and squats are great strength training. Be careful to protect the joints, knees and ankles. I can't remember, is the stress fracture in your foot? Is the pain localized?

From Burt on Fri, Mar 12, 2010 at 00:01:13 from 98.177.220.145

I think you'd have to watch your balance very carefully and that's probably hard to do while doing lunges. Take them slow and concentrate on form.

I've found that the elliptical feels better when you stay more steady with less bouncing and just move your legs faster. Get those RPMs up and it can be a butt kicker! I also like the elliptical machines where your arms are moving instead of just holding stationary handles. I'll do elliptical any day over getting in a cold pool.

Well I had every intention to go and ride the bike for an hour today, but my little guy is coming down with a cold, I think.  I already have gotten "in trouble" once with a day care lady, so I didn't want to rock the boat.  Besides, I would not want to pass along the cold if that is what he has.

Anyway, I did 50 min of circuit  training.  That was hard but it felt good!  I really enjoyed the repeated tapping on the head from my 2 year old. LOL  My abs are sore and I am starting to feel it in my calves.  GOT TO LOVE IT!  I am still hoping I can go later tonight.  We will see. :)

 WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY!!!!

Went to the pool this morning.  It felt really good, but started to hurt where my fracture is. I was there doing my pool thing and this nice lady, who is an aerobic instructor came over and asked if she could give me some pointers.  Hey why not, I need all the help I can get.  One thing she suggested was doing a cross country skiing move.  Both your legs and arms are straight.  So I tried it, Oh my gosh that was really hard.  I am going to try to add that (a little) to my pool stuff.  I hope I don't die!!!

I was told by the Dr. to give my stress fracture 6 weeks to heal.  This would be my last week, but I think I am going to go 2 more weeks since I still feel a little pain still and I have officially decided not to run my two races I signed up for :(, so there is no reason to hurry through things (even though I am dying to run outside!!!!!)  I want to do this right and smart.

I have come to the conclusion that I got my stress fracture for the stupid indoor tack I trained on for my half marathon.  Curse that indoor track!!!  No more for me!

You are very wise to do the recovery right and smart and not rush things. Two more weeks sounds like a good idea.

From RAD on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 15:53:27 from 67.172.229.125

Nice job on the pool running! I usually do water aerobics when I'm pregnant and that x-country move IS hard! I liked doing the running, because I felt like I was using my running muscles and keeping them in shape.

I agree with your assessment of the 6 weeks. My PT said until I had NO pain, then I could start walking 20 min on a TM after doing that for 3-5 days pain free I could increase by 5-7 minutes at a time (every 3 days) until I could do 45 minutes for 5 days pain free. It was ALL based on pain. If I felt any I had to step back, so waiting until you feel no pain is SO much better than a set time.

From what I looked at re-fracturing is the highest possibility for the next 4-6 months, so yes - take it easy, we don't want to be back to square one in JUNE when it's nice outside, then just start getting back when it starts to turn cold again :)

From Toby on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 16:00:49 from 216.194.124.36

Nice workout Cal! The skiing move is DANG hard! I think I need to take more rest time between each run. Hence I will be in the pool more this week.

I will be at the pool tomorrow at 5:15!

It was cold this morning!!  The pool was crowded and that kind of bugs me.  I had to do a lot of moving out of peoples way.  Oh well, it help distract me.  I did some of the cross country and really liked it.  I can really feel it in my legs.

I think I am extra tired today because I stayed up too late watching the movie "The Box". I do not recommend it.  It was very confusing and the ending left you going "What".  I am mad I used up precious sleep for that.  I will pick the movie next time.  Blind side comes out today and I think I am actually going to go buy that one.  I haven't seen it yet, but my 11 yr. son has and he says it is a must.

the word "hard" is an under statement for sure!  I was so bored I could sream!  I didn't have my swimmimg buddy (toby) there to make it fun.

I had to do a lot of dodging people.  The water aerobic people think they can take up all the space that is not used for lap swimming.  Because I had do swim for eternity by the time I was done I had the whole pool to myself.  That was really sad.  As much as I am complaining I had a great workout.  I need to get back on the same schedule as toby for sure!!!!

So I am staring out my week with hopefully a good note. I walked for an hour today and so far so good! I have to be careful though because I am so obsessed with my leg that I think I am creating phantom pain. I just need to try to focus on other things. I am really praying that I can keep progressing and not have any set backs.

All last week I did some classes at the rec center. They totally kicked my butt! It felt really good. I am going to try to do the classes at least twice a week. My body needs a complete overhaul. I have to say that that is one good thing about this stress fracture. It has helped me focus on other things than just running. And I really needed that.

I registered for the SLC half marathon which is this saturday and obviously can't run it. So am trying to see if I can change it to the 5k and walk-run it. I hope they will let me.

It is my birthday today and my husband got me the best book as one of my gifts(I am going to get my new shoes too!  I can't wait!), it is called "Born to run" it is written by Christopher McDougall and I think anyone who like to run should read it. It is a true story that is about this tribe in Mexico in the Copper Canyon.  The tribes name is" Tarahumara" and they are known for their endurance any physical health.  They have a crazy diet that includes the seeds that you use with the chita pets.  You soak them in water and they turn into a gel and you eat it.  It is suppose to give you an incredible amounts of energy.  They are known for running for 4 days straight without much food of rest.  I just started it, but I am hooked.  Any way if anyone wants a good read I recommend it.

Happy Running! :)

My shin was kind of hurting as well. I know I set myself up for a bad run with the food and time of day, but my shin is kind of upsetting me.  I am hoping that my leg is just weak and needs to get back into the feel of running....I don't know.  What ever makes me feel better right. :{

ugghhh...amen on the eating. That is why if I don't run in the AM on a nearly empty gut I can't run at all! I've tried it a few times and always regret it - no matter WHAT the food is.

When I started coming back I also had shin issues, I think it's the tight calves that we're not used to. Spend extra time stretching them out and it should help. I also taped mine with KT tape (from the arch, over the ankle and up the inside of my leg so that the 'split' in the tape was on each side of where I felt the pain). It did seem to help quite a bit as well. I still struggle a bit with them, but always have.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sun, Jun 06, 2010 at 18:51:22 from 24.8.167.243

I HATE the first 2 1/2 miles!!! They are hell for me.  I was not having a very good first few miles and was thinking about cutting it short.  I walked for a minute got a drink and than poured cold water down my back and on my legs.  That felt awesome!!  From there I got the rest of my run in.  5 miles!!!  I was really happy about it and the best thing about it was that the last mile I felt awesome!!!

I feel like I am getting to where I was right before I got my injury and that was all I was hoping for this summer.  I have no time goals I just want to get back to where I was.  The only thing is my shin is starting to hurt again!  I am not quite sure what to make of it!  It doesn't hurt when I run, only after.  I think it stems from the pain that is on the top of my ankle.  Like it is the tendon.  Does any one have any thoughts about a sore tendon that runs from the front of your shin down to your ankle?

My hubby was getting worried about me so he met me about a block from home on one of our little electric motorcycles and rode beside me the rest of the way home.  It was fun to have him with me.  I can't get him to run with me but maybe I can get him to ride with me and he can be my water and food guy.

I have had really no pain today in my leg today.  I am hoping that it will stay that way.

Hooray for no pain. I think you should make your husband be your water boy. That's a good idea.

Got new running shoe last night.  I am really excited about them!!  They have a sensor that is in the shoe that syncs with my ipod and keeps track of how far, how fast , how many calories I burn.  I can track all my workout online and set music for my workouts.  I am mostly exited about being able to keep track of how fast I am running.   It may be really depressing!  I can't afford a Garmin :), so I am hoping this will help somewhat. :)

I was hoping to go out this morning but didn't happen.  Didn't get to bed until 2 am.  Saw the movie Inception last night.  It was very entertaining!  A little confusing at one point but you figure it all out.

Hoping I can get out tonight to run. :)

That shoe sensor sounds COOL! So, did you get to take it out for a spin. It was dang hot!

We saw Inception in the afternoon too. Very creative and thought provoking! I usually fall asleep in a movie after a long run, even the action type movie. But not this one, it was quite captivating. I had to stay alert so I wouldn't be confused. Very interesting movie. My guys really love this movie.

Have a great week!

WOW! HOT!!  way too hot to be running.

I wasted cool morning time trying to figure out my sensor in my shoe.  The day I got it I turned it off so I wouldn't waste the battery.  Well I went to turn it on today and I was miss reading the direction.  I was soooo frustrated!!  No, I did not figure it out and NO, I couldn't run with it.  I still ran and It was not the best run.  Really hot and couldn't get into it.  Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

It did finally figure my sensor thing out and all is well.

Did 55 min of abs, buns, and thighs class which kicked my butt!!!  It was hard today.

Ran 3.48 miles with an average pace of 10:06 minutes a mile.  I was pleased with how fast I was going.  I think I better double check the calibration, that seems a little too fast for me.

I got my sensor to work and it was really fun to have all that info.  I can go online and keep track of my workout and have it graph my progress.  It will be fun to watch.

My shin is a little sore today.  That just makes me mad!!

We have ward tempel night tonight and I am worried I am going to fall asleep!  I can't take a little nap this afternoon because i am taking the kids to the pool.  A full day, I might have to drink a coke before I go!  Maybe bring to candy to suck on so I don't fall asleep. :)

I ALWAYS fall asleep in the temple during the *movie*. Doesn't everybody? :)

From Burt on Tue, Jul 20, 2010 at 13:29:00 from 206.19.214.144

Let me call you both to repentance (since I'm perfect, and I can.)

Smooth - if you fall asleep, you just denied the sister you did the proxy work for of all the blessings she would have otherwise received and therefore must do it over.

Callie - If you drink a coke before you go to the temple, you really shouldn't be going in. Remember your temple interview and your covenants.

From Smooth on Tue, Jul 20, 2010 at 13:46:40 from 174.23.218.43

Burt ~ Absolutely! There's beauty in repetitions. I am certain the proxy works I do were already done numerous times previously. :)

Callie ~ NO worries! I am 100% sure the interview questions do not involve drinking coke! I think Burt (who is perfect) has a different set of covenants than the imperfect people.

I pinch myself to stay awake. Seriously, I think we should get FREQUENT FLIER cards and after we have been a certain amount of times we get to go to speed version, skipping the movie altogether. Don't ya think???

I have to say, I have never fallen asleep, but Scott has! I think the chairs are way too uncomfortable, I must be going to the wrong temple!

Hope the night went well! And i am sure the calibration was ON, you just ran faster today and it felt good!

Ran 6

walked 1 (trying to calibrate my sensor)

So started last Tuesday I have been really sick.  I caught a bad cold and it wiped me out. Today was the first day I felt like doing anything.  I must be cursed!!  Every time I decide to run a race something AWLAYS hinders by training!  I am getting really frustrated.  I am planning on running the Provo trail half marathon on the 7th.  I am not where I should be and so I will probably kill myself.  I am bound and determined to run this no matter what.  I may have to walk a lot but nothing is stopping me!!!!!

My run today was ok :].  I HATE the first 3 miles!!!  I was sucking wind.  I could not catch my breath.  Once I pass that 3 mile mark I am good.  It must my a mental thing.  My sensor was off too.  The first time I used it I thought I calibrated it right but I was unsure a little of the distance I ran.  I knew the exact total distance today and it was off by almost a mile!  So I came home and walked on the TM for a mile to calibrate it but I still think it is off.  I am not smart when it comes to gadgets.   I might do another mile later and try to figure this out.

I have to go to the dentist today!!  Not happy!  I have to have my old fillings taken out and replaced with new ones.  My fillings are the "old" ones and are starting to cause some problems.  Bring on the GAS!!!

Got a late start to my run today.  Didn't get out until around 9.  It was Hot!!!  I was planning on running 6 but the heat got to me and only got 5 in.

As I am running this crazy lady pulls over and yells out her window....oh she not crazy, she's my cousin Toby, LOL.  Stopped to talk to her for a minute.   We live really close to each other but hardly see one another.  We need to work on that. :)

Got in a fender bender this evening!!! :(  I was parking and the guy next to me was acting weird and started to pull out while I was starting to park.  He was parked at a funny angle and as he was trying to back out I stopped to let him finish and he hit the back side of my car.  My car looks really good, his car it another story.  At times like this I am glad I drive a big car.  We did the whole cop thing, but the cop was kind of not helpful.  He didn't ask what happened and didn't get each side of the story.  I'm kind of worried that he is going to say it was both our faults.  I went up to him after and told him it wasn't my fault and said he would have to call the other guy and ask his side of the story. Stupid!! Aren't you suppose to do that while your all together?

I had a crazy lady honk at me several times and then swerve over today while I was running....turned out it was my sister! RELATIVES!!!!

Way to get out there in the heat, it makes it TOUGH!

Now, about the fender bender: since it was in a parking lot, the cops really do not "care" and the reason they don't is that they can not give tickets on personal property AND the insurance companies always do their own investigation anyway. So, the cops come to get a report for the insurance company, then the insurance company will talk to both of you, then THEY decide whose fault it is and you are at their mercy. (This is my "expertness" from being married to a cop and 2 parking lot accidents.)

Just a big guess here, but since he was reversing, he will most likely be found at fault. According to the cops point of view, anyone reversing is at fault, they do not have the right of way. So, I hope that is how it turns out for you!!

And I feel the same way about my monster suburban!!! However, a tiny little deer can do a ton of damage to even a big car, so steer clear of those!

From calliej on Fri, Jul 30, 2010 at 16:49:11 from 97.126.129.180

Kelli- That's good to hear about the reversing thing. I have been sick to my stomach thinking about the whole thing. I did talk to the guys ins. and the man said that it sounds like he is at fault. I sure hope the guy is honest!

Ran 8 miles today.  It was a pretty good run.  Got up early enough so the heat wasn't as bad. My first three miles were tough.  I think it is because it is a gradual up hill the whole way.  I have to give myself a shout out because there is a steep hill right passed the first mile and I haven't been able to run up the whole thing without stopping, but today I ran the whole thing and I was so excited that I almost started to cry I was so happy!!!  My first 3 mile my avg. pace pre mile was 11:00 min(wow that is slow!!!).  But the remaining 5 miles I avg. 10:30 per mile.

All in all I felt good.  I'm about to go to bed and I really have no soreness and still feel really good.  I am really excited for my race next Sat.  I know it will be one of my slower races, but I'm ok with that.  I am just glad to be back running and not having any pain. :)

AWESOME RACE!!!!!

So glad I ran this race!!  It ended up being my best race ever.  I have never felt so good and enjoy the whole race.  My Husband ask me what I thought  the difference was from this race to others.  I have no idea.  I know I went into it with a really relaxed attitude and set no goals for myself.

It was a beautiful morning.  Got to the top of the mountain and it was cold.  I ran this last year and it was freezing last year so this year I was ready for it and brought a blanket with me.  It was my daughter flannel sheet that was purple and had snowmen on it.  I got some funny looks, but I was warm.  While we were standing in line for the potties there was this deer that would come up to anyone and let you pet him.  People were feeding it and petting it and it got a little too close for comfort.

We stared late, but not as late as last year.  There was a lot of confusion as to where the start was.  Maybe because the guy didn't have it set up until minutes before we started.

Started the race and I took it real easy and got myself warmed up.  At mile 3 I had to go to the bathroom, which I have never had to do in the middle of a race.  I stopped and went and from then I on was "ON FIRE"  I felt really strong and kept steady in my run.

At the beginning there was this lady I was pacing myself off and lost her when I went to the bathroom.  I was really bummed about that.  But between mile 6 and 7 I caught up to her.  I was really proud of myself that I caught up to her.  See, when I run my races I am always getting passed and I never pass anyone.  Not this race.  From the time I left the potty I was passing and I rarely got passed.  That felt good.

I used the down hills to make up some time which I think helped.  And thanks to the up hill training I kicked butt on the up hills!

I can honestly say I never hit the wall.  That has never happened to me either.  At about mile 11 I was feeling it in my pelvis but it felt better to keep running than to walk.

I am really excited to get back out this week and really try to keep up what I have!!!!

Had a great ice bath with some ibuprofen, a shower and a nap.  Feel like a new women.

Just a side note, awaiting the arrival of my newest niece.  My sister was due last Thursday.  I can't wait to see her!!!!

Got my official time this morning and it is 2:15:34.  Faster than I thought!!!  That has made my week!!!

Why is it when you think you only need minor things done on your car it end up costing a fortune!  The joys of having car, right.

Wanted to run 4 miles today but had to cut it short because I had to go to the bathroom really bad!!  It seems to happen to me often within the first few miles and it really frustrates me. Besides that, it was a good run.  Hope I can get back into the grove of running now that the kids are back in school.  I am forced into a schedule now. :(

So I was driving in my car today and I had my window down and all of a sudden something hit me in my eye.  It hurt really bad but I just kept driving.  My eye was hurting more and more and more and then all of a sudden on the inside of both thighs it started to feel like I was being pinched really bad.  My Mom was in the car with me along with all my kids and my nephew and I finally had to pull over.  I told my mom that I thought there was something in my pants.  I jumped out of the car and my mom yelled it was a bee.  It stung me 3 times!!!  I was in sooo much pain!!!  I had to cry and I did,  My kids thought I was a crazy lady.  Luckily I am not allergic and I didn't swell really at all.  To top it all off I had to go to the Dentist about an hour later to have an old fill replaced.  I am done with shots and bee stings!!!

Beware when you have your window down!!

Didn't get my run in this morning so after I got the older kids off to school I put my two little guys in the bike trailer and went for a bike ride.  I had this crazy idea that I would ride to my sister's house.  I live in PG, and she lives in Alpine.  I really didn't think it through.

For those who live in the area there is a good size hill right by the Timpanogos Temple and I could not ride up it.  I didn't take into consideration the extra 70 pounds of kids and bike trailer I was hauling behind me!!!!!!!!  It killed me!!!!  I made it almost to the wal-mart in Cedar Hills.  They are doing road construction there and there is no shoulder and I am not a great biker so it made me nervous, and I was DEAD!!!  I turned around and road down hill the whole way home.  My boys loved it.  We got going really fast.

Now my thighs are shot and I am tired!!

WOW! That is one tough ride. It makes me even more nervous on my bike when I've got the kids with me - smart idea to turn and go home!

From Toby on Sat, Aug 28, 2010 at 21:33:49 from 66.133.97.196

I love that hill on my bike ALONE - but no with those cuties :) All the construction is bugging me - there is too much junk on the road!

Got up early this morning for a really nice run!  I ran with my friend this morning and she is faster than me so she pushed me.  That is the fastest I have been in a long time!  It felt really good!

There is a half marathon in Highland the middle of Oct. that we are planning on running. There is a part of me though that really enjoys running by myself.  I don't have to worry about anyone.  We are pretty equal in our running abilities so I don't think it will be an issue. She doesn't care if we split up either.  I am hoping we will be able to push each other to go faster.  We have the potential to run a really good race.

LOVE fall running.  You can't beat this beautiful weather!

Train together, race apart!! That is my philosophy!!! If you run the race for fun, it is all good to go together, but if you want to see what you are capable of you need to be on your own. It is amazing just how much the act of TALKING can slow you down (I would know, I never shut up!)

Great job today and good luck with the training!

From RAD on Thu, Sep 02, 2010 at 14:13:50 from 67.172.229.125

ditto to Kelli's comment! I notice a significant difference in pace when I'm trying to talk as I run v. racing and pushing myself. So, it all comes down to your goal for the race.

Great job on the miles and pushing the pace, especially since it felt good. Oh, and yes I could beat this weather...with a little WARMTH! I hate cold :(

From Smooth on Thu, Sep 02, 2010 at 15:11:42 from 174.23.218.17

YAY! So HAPPY you had a *friend run*! It is good to have someone to help push each other to a good race. I wish there was someone who runs my pace or faster that would run races with me. It is really rare to have that relationship. GOOD FOR YOU TWO!

What half marathon is this in Highland?

From Toby on Thu, Sep 02, 2010 at 23:32:38 from 66.133.97.196

Double ditto on Kelli's comment. I get way to competitive when it comes to racing. My girlies keep seeing your beautiful 2nd grader at lunch and think they are so cool!

We are picking up the pace and it is kind of killing me. I like the push, but I don't think I could run a whole half marathon @ this pace and feel good by the end. My friend runs 5k's and really pushes herself in them and that is great, but I think we need to start out a little slower and pick it up more like after mile 3 or 4. I do want to get faster so maybe I should just suck it up and push through it. Would love to hear from you wise runners and what you think? My biggest thing is to avoid injury!!!

My Husband has been sick the past few days and I am ready to go made! Why are men such wimps!!! I had the same thing at the beginning of the week and I didn't get to take the afternoon off and sleep the reat of the day!!! What's up with that?  I guess that is why the women have the babies. If it was up to the men the human race would be extinct!

Hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend!!

Smooth- My friend that told me about the half in Highland was mistaken, it is only a 10k.

Burt- only when your sick! :)

From Scott Wesemann on Sun, Sep 05, 2010 at 01:48:49 from 75.162.85.220

I have to agree with you on the sick thing. I am a much bigger wimp than my wife when I am sick. Yeah, Burt, you're a wimp too.

As for your running, just push it as hard as you can without crashing. Keep pushing during your training runs to see where your limits are and then you will know about how fast you will want to go out when you race. Not that I am an expert, but I think it is a good thing to push and then listen to your body. I love pushing myself to test my limits, although I am still scared to death to try and run too fast and crash and burn during a race. :) Have I confused you yet? Ha.

From calliej on Mon, Sep 06, 2010 at 13:32:49 from 97.126.141.213

Scott- Thanks for the advice. It was not confusing at all. My goal is to run faster so as hard as it is I am going to have to push myself. Thanks! :)

From Toby on Mon, Sep 06, 2010 at 17:02:03 from 66.133.97.196

Way to go Callie! I am getting closer to consistent miles (verses minutes), so we will have to go sometime soon together!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Sep 06, 2010 at 19:52:55 from 24.8.167.243

I really like to start slow and then speed up after a mile or two, but if you can handle starting closer to your target pace and you feel okay with the pace after a little bit, I'd say go with it. It will make you stronger.

Had a good run in the morning.  We really pushed ourselves at the beginning and it kind of kicked my butt.  I can feel it helping me though.  It is so nice to have someone who helps you push yourself.

From here on out my main goal is to lose 10 lbs.  My husband and I are heading to Mexico the end of Oct. and I don't want to look like a beached whale.  The thing that make it discouraging is that my husband has been working out too and he is looking really hot!!! Why is it so hard for me to lose and it's nothing for him!!!  I am going to start to post my weight so no one make fun!!  Here goes nothing!!

HELLOW !!

Haven'y been around for a while.  Life got a little busy.

Registered  for St. George 1/2 marathon.  I am really excited for that.  I guess the course has changed this year, so that will make it even more fun.  I have been running some and am feeling really good.

I am not a great outdoor runner when the weather turns really cold, so I will be doing most of my running on the indoor track and TM.  I am really going to try to balance the two so that I don't get another stress fracture.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

Well had a huge breakfast with eggs, bacon, homemade hash browns, and homemade sticky buns.  It was awesome!!

TM: 3 @ 10 miles. It felt really good.  I thought I would get sick form the huge breakfast but very thing sat really well.  I can tell I am out of shape but if I can stick with it I think it wont take me to long to get back to where i was.

It was awesome weather! Not to cold, not to warm, nice clouds, oh yeah and the poison I was inhaling!  I have the inversion we get here!!

Felt good the whole time.  I got mentally tired but pushed through it and had an awesome run.  I feel way better about running this race.  I think I will do pretty good.

Rad- I am running the St.George half in Jan. things are going good. I just think my knee is sore from my longer runs. Aren't you running that race?

Toby- I haven't gone to see the foot Dr yet. I decided if it keeps hurting with my running then I will go to him. My foot is kind of funny, if I am running consistently the pain will go away. So far so good.

Congrats on your dresses!

Hey Kelli~ things are going better. I got the full blown influenza! Knocked me out! I'm all better and still planning on running the race. I don't know if I am going to be able to keep up with you and your friend, but I will run with you guys for as long as I can. I am really excited for this race. You will be good, you still have a good 3 weeks or so of training, just do not over do it! My friend (Wendy) is currently injured and will not be running for yet another week, we will see how she is next week. So, we will probably be slower, too, but I am still hoping for a 1:59:59!!!
