Sole Sports is opening a new store in Scottsdale.  A friend of mine works there, and let me know about a free 5k they were doing.  Knowing that today is either the fourth or fifth race in the ARR summer series, I figured there wouldn't be too much competition and maybe a small turnout.  Boy was I wrong.

I tried to get to bed early last night, but that didn't happen.  At midnight thirty I finally stopped watching Most Shocking Videos and went to sleep.  The alarm was set for 4:30, but I got up at 5am.  I brushed my teeth, shaved, showered, and put some smell-ums under my armpit.  I couldn't find any Body Glide, but that was fine.  I don't get nipular bleeding unless I run more than 8 miles.  Now I needed to hurry as I was supposed to check in at 6am.  I ate a granola bar real quick and grabbed a Gleukos Performance Beverage that my wife had bought me.  I figured I'd drink it on the way.  It comes in this pouch with a screw-top lid.  I opened the lid and promptly spilled it down the front of my shirt and on my shorts.  It's so warm here though that by the time I got to Snobsdale, it was all dry.

So I'm expecting to see 20 other people, 30 tops, but there must have been at least 100.  I signed my waiver and bought a $5 technical T.  There were no bibs or timing chips.  There were no prizes for the winners either.  But there was plenty of complimentary food at the finish line and a couple of raffles.

I saw my new friend Jeff that I met Thursday night at the group run.  We talked about how the cloud cover was making it cooler than the previous couple of mornings  as we walked to the starting line.  Then I saw Derek Detemple.  I told Jeff that Derek is a fast dude.

At the starting line everyone shied away from lining up front.  You know my philosophy.  If people are going to be scared of the line, that's my ticket for a front row seat.  Derek came up and lined up next to me.  He, of course, won.  Jeff came in 4th.  The course went along the canal and a golf course.  The rolling hills of the course were not nice.  I was up front with the leaders for about a minute as it didn't seem like the pace was too terribly fast.  Then Garmin told me I was running a 6:24 pace.  A little too aggressive for a guy that hasn't run more than 10 miles over the last two weeks.  Next Garmin made me french toast and bacon for breakfast.  No, that was my wife.  ChrisM's got the fancy Garmin that does that.

My first mile was 7:05.  I did settle down and hoped to get faster as I went.  But that didn't happen. (Funny how things never happen the way I plan.)  About 3/4 mile I got chicked.  She was the only female that beat me.  I gave her a black eye after the race.  The second mile was 7:32.  I got passed by two guys here.  One of them was pushing a stroller!  Whatever.  The third mile was 7:56.  This is where most of the little rolling hills were.  They weren't even that bad, but I was dying.  I did pass a guy that stopped to walk.  I knew everyone else was pretty far behind me so I was worried that if walker man caught his breath he might catch back up to me.  The last 0.10 miles was 44 seconds.  I was able to hold everyone off, but because I knew I wasn't in danger of going down a place, I just cruised in.  Had I anything resembling a kick, I might have caught the guy in front of me.

I'm okay with my 16th place and time knowing I haven't put any miles in lately.  It also proves that P90X is keeping me in decent running shape.  Hopefully next week I can start running in the mornings.  I won a free T-shirt in the raffle by virtue of having run all 4 Ragnar Del Sol relays.  And while I was waiting the sweat kept dripping off me.  If you thought it was bad earlier in the week, you should have hugged me now.

Day 13 - P90X - Kenpo X

Starting to get the moves down a little better.  I don't hate this workout anymore.

Nice job, Burt! If I didn't have to help a new member move in, I might have joined you (and probably run at the same pace as you as well!)

From Scott Wesemann on Sat, Jul 17, 2010 at 16:16:19 from 75.162.67.136

You shower and shave before a race? Weird.

Nice run Burt. Pretty good for a P90Xer! :)

From ChrisM on Sat, Jul 17, 2010 at 16:27:04 from 86.174.23.117

Nice job Burt, especially with all the P90X you have been doing. Sounds fun with complimentary FOOD at the end. And at you got the full 5K this time!

That'l teach her to chick you! LOL

From flatlander on Sat, Jul 17, 2010 at 17:42:31 from 198.207.244.102

Nice race, obviously your cross-training is keeping you up to speed. Can't do better than a free race with some decent runners in it. Do any of the Most Shocking Videos have runners in them?

From Burt on Sat, Jul 17, 2010 at 17:43:37 from 68.225.214.248

James - Even being out of shape like you are right now, I have a feeling you would have beat me by a couple of minutes.

Scott - Of course I shower before a race. No sense in getting double stinky.

Chris - Garmin measured 3.1 exactly. I don't think I ran the tangents all that well, so I was happy for it. And maybe I really didn't punch her. Sometimes I embelish my blog a little to make it interesting. :P

From Steve Piccolo on Sat, Jul 17, 2010 at 17:43:40 from 155.101.243.223

Hey, good job!! You're in the 16th percentile.

From Burt on Sat, Jul 17, 2010 at 17:44:49 from 68.225.214.248

Flat - mostly it's fat people falling off of things. I laugh because it's not me.

From Burt on Sat, Jul 17, 2010 at 18:29:19 from 68.225.214.248

Steve - Is that enough to get me into an Ivy League school?

allie - oh yeah. I've got hygiene coming out of every pore.

Great job on your race. Sounds like it was a lot of fun. I like those races where there aren't timing chips or anything else, just a lot of fun. Congrats.

From Brent on Sat, Jul 17, 2010 at 18:46:18 from 66.7.127.219

Burt, not far off those 7:15s, says you have some speed, get your butt out there putting in some miles, expect 7:15s from your next race. Free stuff is always good.

Stay Kool, of BS Rools out

From Scott Ensign on Sat, Jul 17, 2010 at 22:03:57 from 71.35.224.45

nice job Burt. hey- I turned on my TV for the first time in maybe 3 months today out of sheer boredom and there in front of me was an infomercial for your P90x stuff. made me think of you anyway. oh well congrats on a nice time on a hot day!

From Toby on Sat, Jul 17, 2010 at 22:43:35 from 216.194.124.37

Nice race Burt!

You are totally in shape - pretty soon we will be seeing your infomercial "Body by Burt" featuring Burt and his son and the trash can!

From Burt on Sun, Jul 18, 2010 at 00:31:08 from 68.225.214.248

Jun - it was perfect because I wasn't going to push it. But I did anyway. :)

Brent - I'll do it for you.

Rooster - I'm glad you're finally in the know. haha!

Toby - you're funny. Trash Can Toning.

From SlowJoe on Sun, Jul 18, 2010 at 07:26:07 from 214.13.130.104

Thank you for teaching me the word nipular. Next time you're about to get passed by a stroller, jab a stick in its wheel spokes and that will take care of it.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jul 18, 2010 at 18:29:08 from 174.52.45.85

Sweet Sixteen!!! :)

Nice race!!!

(Smell-ums???? What in the world? Is that a real product?)

From Burt on Sun, Jul 18, 2010 at 19:24:45 from 68.225.214.248

Joe - that's worse than punching a woman! lol

Teena - Sure. Look it up. I could say deoderant, to use the vernacular of the peasantry.

From CookieLegs on Sun, Jul 18, 2010 at 20:40:11 from 71.36.75.53

Nice job on the race, Burt, especially in that Arizona heat!!!

From JD on Sun, Jul 18, 2010 at 20:51:51 from 32.176.198.69

Way to go you sweaty beast!!

From Lily on Sun, Jul 18, 2010 at 22:23:43 from 67.199.181.73

I uh....don't quite know what to say about being 'chicked' and giving her a black eye. But sounds like you hauled. Awesome.

From Rhett on Mon, Jul 19, 2010 at 12:16:57 from 74.41.249.102

Nice race Burt, and the fact that it was free makes it even better.

From Burt on Mon, Jul 19, 2010 at 12:40:20 from 206.19.214.144

Adele - I think it was only about 92 during the race. It got a lot hotter after the clouds disappeared.

JD - At the raffle there was this one little area where all the winners were coming from. I wanted to move over there but thought I was too sweaty.

Lily - you're such a women's activist.

Rhett - thanks. The ARR events aren't that expensive, But you're right. Free is better :)

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Jul 20, 2010 at 08:45:13 from 68.103.243.161

Great job Burt! I am jealous that you got a technical tee for only 5 bucks! ONLY

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Jul 20, 2010 at 08:46:11 from 68.103.243.161

92 degrees? You Arizona people and your onlies. I shudder at the thought of racing in 92 degrees.

From KP on Tue, Jul 20, 2010 at 09:01:45 from 65.208.22.26

whoop whoop!

From Merri on Tue, Jul 20, 2010 at 10:32:05 from 160.7.252.148

loving the report... snobsdale, black eyes, it doesn't get much better than this.

From Burt on Tue, Jul 20, 2010 at 11:20:09 from 68.225.214.248

April - 92's not bad when you're used to 112. LOL!

KP - holler!

Merri - If you think we make fun of people in Scottsdale, you should hear what we say about people in Utah.

We say they're great.
