Finally I went running again.  Well, jogging.  My calf still is bugging some.  I guess I'll just focus on stretching it a lot.  But I'm afraid it's a tear.  Stretching a tear can't be good, can it?

I saw Never-look-at-me lady and surgical-mask lady today.  My how I've missed them.

Time - 24:51 (avg. pace 8:17)

i had calf trouble a few weeks ago and i thought it was a tear. what helped for me was heat/ice/heat. you need to start tracking your creepy lady encounters.

From Burt on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 11:55:34 from 68.76.197.194

Well, you're doing great on tracking random things, so thanks for the advice.

From argentinerocket on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 12:13:37 from 74.9.147.114

Does it hurt more when you run or not? I don't know if it's a tear... My calves are often very tight and they hurt, but usually it gets better as I warm up... don't you love it when people talk about their problems instead of giving you a solution to yours? :)

From Snoqualmie on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 12:20:52 from 24.18.192.33

As long as we're all throwing medical advice at you, I will put in a good word for Arnica Gel. You might have to go to a health food store to get some. Massage it in. It should feel great and help a lot.

Glad you're back out there.

From Britta on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 12:54:20 from 72.130.108.181

Can you take a picture of your running friends(mask lady and don't look lady)? I want to see if my visiual is accurate (sp?). Do you yell hello at the lady who won't look at you. I can just see you being obnoxious trying to get her attention.

From auntieem on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 12:58:54 from 67.182.145.8

I second it on the arnica gel. I use it everyday, lol! Have you tried rolling your calf over a tennis ball? Its painful, but can help work out deeper muscle tightness. Glad you are running again!

From Burt on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 13:42:32 from 68.76.197.194

Rocket - it doesn't hurt as bad, but it feels like it's dead.

Sno and Em. I'll look into that arnica stuff. I think a good massage would do it well. Or some scraping like Josse does.

Britta - it was so funny because she was watching the cars in the street but as I approached her she put her head down so that her eyes were covered by the brim of her hat. I yelled good morning to her and she said it back, but she wouldn't look at me.

Man I wish I encountered the interesting folks you do on your runs. Nothing but the occasional dog(or goat) here. Lots of roadkill though maybe I should start naming them. Anyways that's a chipper pace there with your hurt calf. Hope it heals nicely and quickly.

From Metcalf Running on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 14:55:48 from 207.225.192.66

Ya I was thinking you were still pretty speedy for having a hurt calf. I hope it gets feeling better soon.

From Brent on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 15:26:14 from 168.178.30.75

Burt, zoots compression sleeves, may help, big hair 80s, no hair 2000s, nice to see you back running. I think you should were a zoro mask, something to get their attention.

Stay kool, any normal runners out there, B of BS Rools out

From Kelli on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 16:25:36 from 71.219.96.151

I bet they missed you, too!

Take care of yourself, we do not want you hobbled!!!

From sam Dean-Howard on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 17:49:37 from 90.195.99.78

I agree with Brent compression sleeves over the calves, I wear compression socks when my calves are feeling it, but there are about 3 different calf stretches you should do so check them out, really important to stretch different parts of your calf.

Also arnica gel yes I agree, and ice ice ice and more ice, not nice but really good and try heat rub before you run and ice after you run, but always stretch after your run then ice ice baby yeah x

p.s Zorro mask all the way dude !

From Steve Piccolo on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 22:12:26 from 66.60.123.63

I didn't stretch my calf when I injured it. not sure if it helped or hindered though.

From Rhett on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 23:46:04 from 216.67.220.235

I bet they missed you too Burt. I'm glad you were able to get in some miles. After my never ending injury, I have much more sympathy for others with injuries.

From sam Dean-Howard on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 07:56:20 from 78.32.130.9

Hey Burt, yes to stretching and roller massaging especially when your injured but gentle stretching it helps with the new growth of muscle and scar tissue forming hows it doing now ?

From Mike Warren on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 07:58:38 from 208.117.124.133

Darn injuries!! I think it's twice as bad for us clydesdales. I fell off the wagon on the biggest loser. Running SGM in the Clydesdale, again!

From James W on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 17:40:00 from 12.151.72.1

I have had calf issues in the past - do you remember any distinct point where you felt any kind of popping in the calf muscle? Might be a strain, which could include a partial tear of the muscle. Unless you can see some sort of deformity in your calf muscle, I would doubt it is torn or "pulled". However, calf strains can take a long time to heal. I missed two consecutive SGM's because of a strained calf and had to take about 6 weeks off running to get it healed up. What kind of stretches are you doing? Have you tried using the stick on it? Hope it gets better.
