I did a little research on ducks this morning.  I had to.  But the research I did not coincide with my field observations.  I wanted to know if ducks are monogamous.  Remember the ducks I've been seeing over the last couple of weeks?  Sometimes I see them in my front yard.  Other times they've been in the canal with their babies.  Well, my on-line research says that some species are monogamous, but mallards are not.  I'm pretty sure my ducks are mallards.  Mallards pair off with their mates, but the males usually leave the female after the eggs hatch.  From what I saw this morning, it made me wonder if Wikipedia is indeed the source of all truth and knowledge in this world.

As I was running up Lindsay approaching where the canal crosses, I saw the daddy duck next to the sidewalk.  I thought that was odd.  Usually he's in the canal or in my front yard begging for bread crumbs.  So I hugged the street side of the walk so as to not scare it away.  Then I noticed why it was standing there not moving.  It was right next to the mommy duck, who was dead.  It was so sad.  I stopped to look.  Daddy duck was quietly quacking.  I'm not sure if he was saying, "Stay away" or "Help."  But I was sad.  Sad, sad.

I think I have the answer for you Burt. Do you have an Android phone or an iPhone? I would normally always recommend an iPhone but in this case Android looks like the way to go.

That's seriously heart breaking.

From auntieem on Mon, Apr 25, 2011 at 15:47:45 from 67.182.149.104

So sad! I know many humans who are less monogamous than that. I think the mallards here are monogamous, because after they pair off, ALL the ducks, males and females, leave the little pond. I can only assume they all go to the egg laying/nesting place together.

From RAD on Mon, Apr 25, 2011 at 16:39:49 from 98.202.17.113

Rob...that is crazy!

Burt, way to put a damper on my day! :( Now I'm going to be depressed thinking of the poor mommy duck and the daddy waiting for her to wake up. Poor daddy!

From Merri on Mon, Apr 25, 2011 at 16:56:04 from 160.7.252.148

Poor little Mama duck.

From Burt on Mon, Apr 25, 2011 at 20:23:48 from 206.19.214.144

Rob - that could change the world!

Chad - I know, right?

Auntieem - that's interesting, but my research told me where they really go. So as to not taint your pure and wholesome mind, it would be in your best interest to not google duck breeding practices. Or duckbutter for that matter.

RAD - Even though it was in the opposite direction, I had to go back and check on them as I was riding my bike to work. Sure enough, an hour later, they were both still there.

Merri - you'll be happy to know that the bunnies are still in that person's yard. And the gate is still open.

allie - I need to go have a pep talk with the daddy. Come on! You've got some babies that need you now!

It already has Burt, I just found out what my dog really thinks about me. And what cats intend to do with us when they take over the world.

From Burt on Mon, Apr 25, 2011 at 21:31:42 from 206.19.214.144

Steam8 - I had to go back to make sure it was dead. I could tell rigor mortis had set in by how high the rock I threw at it bounced off.

From Burt on Mon, Apr 25, 2011 at 21:32:37 from 206.19.214.144

Rob - some information is best kept unknown.

From SlowJoe on Mon, Apr 25, 2011 at 22:29:30 from 184.79.24.255

Well if he wasn't dead before you threw the rock at him, you definitely finished the job.

From Walter on Tue, Apr 26, 2011 at 10:35:54 from 24.2.66.36

He was saying, dont go to the light momma ducky! Maybe if you quit feeding them bread they wouldnt cross the street and risk certain death. Ok that was mean, come back here Burt...

From Burt on Tue, Apr 26, 2011 at 12:08:05 from 72.223.90.79

Joe - It was a mercy killing.

Squirrel - I told you it was going to be sad. Maybe I'll find something joyous to blog about today.

Leandra - Three years, huh? Congratulations.

Walter - I already felt bad enough as it was. Geez man.

From flatlander on Tue, Apr 26, 2011 at 13:44:26 from 198.207.244.102

These Texas mallards are definitely not monogamous, not sure what that says about us.

From Burt on Tue, Apr 26, 2011 at 13:49:07 from 206.19.214.144

Mark - it means don't mess with Texas.

Wait a minute... Has anyone thought this might have been a murder/homicide?

I'm thinking that daddy duck was saying "now where can I hide the body"!

From Ericka on Tue, Apr 26, 2011 at 19:31:02 from 71.195.209.128

This story made me sad :(

From DaleG on Tue, Apr 26, 2011 at 23:15:53 from 152.216.7.5

Poor daddy duck. He needs to find a nanny duck to help take care of the children duckies while he goes to work at the bread crumb factory.

From Brent on Tue, Apr 26, 2011 at 23:29:26 from 66.7.127.67

Burt, how was the duck soup? sometimes can't tell, if it was a tale? Love between all of nature, what is your take on duck hunting? I quit hunting 20 years ago, couldn't see the point. Darn love sick ducks can't stay out of the road, they have gone nuts this time of year.

Stay Kool, bof Bs rools out

One of my rools - do no harm

From Burt on Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 12:21:14 from 206.19.214.144

IJR - only a Texan where capital punishment is encouraged would think that.

Ericka - You just had to look. Now I know to tell you that I have some oceanfront property on the the Great Salt Lake, but you better not buy it.

April - Sorry for making you sad. Maybe by coming to your Pampered Chef party I'll make you happy :)

Dale - don't tell Preston about a nanny duck. Now you've just added more coals to the fire of his homicide theory. He just found the motive.

Brent - Duck soup? It was like a pet. Who eats their pet?? Don't answer that. I don't hunt, but I'm not at all opposed to it.

From I Just Run on Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 12:26:07 from 67.79.11.242

Ah....Ha....See, we're not as slow, down here in Texas, as you think we are! One sexy nanny duck, one unhappy daddy duck ... makes duck soup of the mommy duck!

From april27 on Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 12:55:28 from 165.138.243.1

You don't have to come...just buy something...LOL

From Burt on Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 21:58:19 from 72.223.90.79

Thanks Squirrel, but I didn't make it up. People did. Well, a person. Okay, it was Julie Esplin.

Trap - Come on man! Show some sympathy!
