I decided to run my 5.5 loop backwards today so that I wouldn't have to bother with the kids going to school and all the cross walk guards.  It wasn't until I was about 3 miles in that I realized running it backwards would cut almost a mile off.

Time - 39:10 (avg. pace 8:31)

Splits - 8:30, 8:24, 8:36, 8:36, 5:05 for 0.60 (8:32 pace)

I'm confused...if it's a loop - how does running it the opposite direction cut off miles?

I do agree with avoiding school traffic, I've hit it a few times this past month or so and I don't like dealing with it!

Excellent AP!

From julieesplin on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 12:20:58 from 75.169.182.110

Burt - You're one of the funniest people I know. I'm having a hard time imagining how running a loop backwards cuts a mile off. I think you're funny even when you don't try to be.

From Calvin on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 12:29:36 from 66.133.117.3

Most people arent coordinated enough to run backwards...

From Burt on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 14:20:53 from 206.19.214.144

I knew I was too lazy in my blogging today to not unfold every little detail. And I knew some wise cracker would say something about running backwards. So, I'll explain. I live 0.75 miles away from Val Vista and 0.3 miles away from Lindsay. Usually I head east towards Val Vista. I then run once around the city block (4 miles), then back home. 0.75 + 4 + 0.75 = 5.5 miles. Today I went west towards Lindsay. 0.3 + 4 + 0.3 = 4.6 miles.

From Burt on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 14:21:32 from 206.19.214.144

You get it?

From RAD on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 14:28:41 from 67.172.229.125

got it! Thanks :)

From Burt on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 14:35:01 from 206.19.214.144

She gets it.

From RAD on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 14:49:32 from 67.172.229.125

She CAN be taught!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 15:14:34 from 75.196.126.11

So you ran a different route today frontwards? You have big blocks in your city!

From Calvin on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 15:24:50 from 66.133.117.3

Incidentally, the worlds record for running a marathon backwards: Xu Zhenjun of China, 3:43:39.

From AZDesertmonsoon on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 15:31:15 from 204.17.31.126

It's not a loop it's a lollipop.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 15:36:25 from 75.196.126.11

Calvin - That' only 6.55 times around the block in Burt's neighborhood.

From ChrisM on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 16:03:39 from 82.20.234.157

If you ran it backwards it should be logged as -4.60 miles and will be taken off your totals rather than added.

From Metcalf Running on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 16:05:56 from 207.225.192.66

Never be lazy :)

From SlowJoe on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 16:40:31 from 214.13.130.104

Sometimes, I run my loops topwise. I find it adds eleventeen percent or so.

From Burt on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 17:05:20 from 206.19.214.144

That's it! I'm setting my blog to private!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 17:21:09 from 75.196.126.11

LOL

From Eric Day on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 17:30:50 from 189.192.109.234

mmm...interesting math: 0.3 + 4.0 + 0.3 = -4.6 miles? And all this in one block ?

What is this? "Honey, I think I shrunk Burt" ?

From Burt on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 17:33:42 from 206.19.214.144

People! A city block = 1 mile long by 1 mile wide.

Trap - 260 miles in a soggy jacket is nothing to LOL at. I mean, -4.6 miles backwards and topwise while kicking Xu Zhenjun in the face is nothing to LOL at.

From jun on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 17:43:28 from 97.126.232.37

My wife doesn't understand why I am sitting at the computer laughing out loud right now.

From Bonnie on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 18:19:40 from 128.196.228.134

Never a dull moment on Burt's blog, frontwards or backwards.

From Brent on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 21:25:43 from 66.7.127.219

Burt, fuzzy math hey? Now, did you run the loop backwards as in running backwards, if you could not see where you were going, no wonders, you may have ran 33 miles, who knows, get some mirrors to put on you hat next time.

Stay Kool, B of BS Rools out

From Toby on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 22:32:17 from 66.133.97.196

From Rhett on Tue, Sep 28, 2010 at 17:44:54 from 184.10.154.226

I love all the contraversy your your lazy blogging has caused. It made for some great comments. Keep up the good work Burt. Your blog is funny even when you don't try.

From baldnspicy on Tue, Sep 28, 2010 at 22:28:19 from 72.77.68.219

Burt, you're such a studd muffin!

From Burt on Tue, Sep 28, 2010 at 22:47:03 from 68.225.214.248

Not a hint of gayness in that one BNS.

From Nan on Fri, Oct 01, 2010 at 14:07:03 from 24.8.144.22

I'm with Chris. Running it backwards would definitely take off mileage. Even Ferris Bueller knows that.

From Burt on Fri, Oct 01, 2010 at 14:45:59 from 206.19.214.144

For years I thought it was possible to make the mileage go back a few ticks if you put it up on stands and ran it in reverse for a few hours.
