Running Accomplishments:

Stay in the game, keep in the moment - have conquered a few of the holy grails of running - sub 3hr marathon, ran Boston and qualified for Boston at Boston, 10K PR under 6 min miles, won a couple of 5Ks in my early days of running, running for 30 years and ran 39 marathons.  The transistion to the back of the pack has not been easy, but, acceptance, stay in the game, root for others, enjoy the rest of the journey.  Another off the bucket list second =  Provo Half IM -  have done 6 open water Tris and 6 pool Tris.  Gave the STG IM a good Tri, hope to take another shot at the IM.

Short-Term Running Goals:

2013 Race Plan - STG Half IronMan, Lake Mead Rage Olympic distance, STG spring relay tri, STG half marathon, STG marathon, Cozumel IM, Utah Summer Games Triathlon at Gunlock, Murray 5k with family and Utah Half Distance Triathlon, 187 mile red rock relay,  STG marathon,

*note of clarification - cross training miles from biking and swimming calculated as follows: (as someone may wonder) 20 mile an hour bike = 5 cross training miles (those not familar with a 20 mph pace, good bike effort for long distance,  swimming, convert 1 hour swimming to 5 cross training miles.  For those that do not swim much, great cardio workout.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Enjoy the Swim, Bike Run thru Life - Hope to Run a Few Races Support Sylvie - Be a good coach   - Support Jenna, Jeremy, Taylor and Bonnie - my kids are now into running, who would of thunk it.  long term goals, recover from the ankle sprain, accept was it, have fun racing, mountain biking, faster swimming.

Devine, when the resolve is slipping, always crank it up a notch. I would say you are the queen of cranking it up a notch. The slipping is only very temp. Proud of you, what a year you had in 2012, and what a start to 2013.

Terri, going to try the ankle on an 8 mile run walk tomorrow up Snow Canyon, West Canyon, down in St. George. We are down her for the next three weeks, doing the STG half, hope to be able to do it.

From Brent on Sun, Jan 06, 2013 at 11:26:39 from 70.196.203.51

Tear Ree - yes petrified snow, never melts, just beautiful. We also seen a road runner yesterday, without willie cyottee.

Sylvie told our oldest grandson Alecks, about the petrified snow in snow canyon, it took him a couple of minutes thinking about it before he called BS.

QP, you called it, I am sore, but, the knee is 90% ok, will run again on monday. It was just darn nice to get outside for a run. Also, my legs are sore from two a days, trying to get back in training mode,it will take a few weeks to get over the soreness. Hope you had a happy new year, best to you this year.

By the way, I am now a happy camper, now have a lap top in STG, so, can access the internet, changed my provider to Verizon for a hot spot.

cold windy run today wtih Sylvie, up Snow Canyon, glad we got out, chilly, chilly, we seen no one on the trail.  It seemed kinda spooky, there is an area about 3 miles up the trail where you can here the echo of your own foot steps.  Ran more than speed walked today, Kankle getting a little better each day.  The Masters swim coach at Shac asked me to come to a masters swim meet tomorrow, she has not seem me swim.  IMCZ planning is going well, signed up for bike transport and called a couple of travel agencies.

Cold day in the desert doesn't seem right. Looks like you did your best to warm it up on the spin bike. I'm sure you got some good stories from Kona girl. Must be an amazing journey to do the IM there & swim Kona bay, ride by the ranches, and run along the menehune walls.

QP, IM Kona is only a dream. Thanks for the encouragment, I will need it for the swim at Cozumel.

Devine, I just looked at the forecast for next saturday in STG, 49 high. Hopefully it will be warmer than 49. Diana's friend Sue wants to ride Snow Canyon for workout. It seems if we were riding primarily uphill we would not get too cold from the wind. I don't know exactly what Di, Sue and Polly have in mind for a bike ride. I will have family, (my daughter, her husband and two grand children0 down here next weekend. I would not likely ride anymore than an hour or two. I will keep an eye on the weather. It would be great to have you go with us.

Lazy day, slept in, darn, went to Deseret palms, spin 1 hour before the spin class.  Spin class was interesting, my first retirement spin class, ONly one person in the class under 50 besides the spin master.  The spin master took no mercy on the old farts, she is a ultra runner, she stood up and did spin intervals all but the last ten minutes of class, she finally realized with about 15 minutes to go, me and her were the only ones standing and spinning, she had wore out the rest of the class.  Only one lady left early, they all gave their best.  It was a good quad workout.  went to Snow Canyon and ran 4 miles with Sylive, nice to get outside in the sunshine.   I hope the spin master keeps coming and the old farts keep coming, they will get in better shape.

Nice run on the kankle, ran the first 7.5 miles until hitting the steep down hill, wealked a minute, then ran the dirt in the medium, people probably thought I was nuts. the rest of the reace was speed walking with running spirts, ran in the dirt as much as possilbe. Just happy to do the race and be part of the race.  Passed Jenna at mile 10, her foot was giving her heck.

After the race, me Devine, Di, Sue and Polly for a bike ride, around Keyenta and then up Snow Canyon and back down bluff, nice 27.5 mile ride.  Legs really fetl good on the ride.  I tried to drop Sue coming back, she stayed right with me in teh draft, man she is tough, that Kona girl can ride a bike.

Early morning swim, SHAc, started in the warm pool, one lane, after 10 laps, three ladies hop in for circle swimming, have swam with them a couple of times.  It really motivated me to stay ahead of them, they swam well.  Hope they would swim every morning to keep me going.  I stopped for a minute when the ladies got out, at 39 laps, swam another 11 laps in the warm pool and the last 10 laps in the cold competition pool.  Total of 60 laps, 3000 yrds.  I read that to show any noticable improvement, swim at least 3000 yrds three times a week.

Going running later to today with Sylvie up Snow Canyon. Ran 6 miles with Sylvie, cold wind from teh north going 3 miles up, Sylvie wanted to turn around and 3 miles, turned around and headed back.  Ran about 80 percent, speed walked about 20 percent.  The recovery to running is going to take a few months.

Swim at SHAC,  now here is something,  when I was swimming, looked up, the life gaurd was sleeping.  I asked her a question in a loud voice, she awoke, swam a few more laps, she was asleep again, woke her again with a question.  I am not the only swimmer who noticed this.  Any hoot, if she does it again while I am there, will be a little more assertive.

Trial run with Sylvie along the hills above red cliffs drive, south side, wow, what a tough trail to run, almost biffed it once.  Nice day for a little trail run, turtle wall is much better than this run.

Mooping around today, finally decided to run up West Canyon, Sylvie went with me, was only going to run 4, Sylvie got to the 2 miles and said are we going further, yes, ran the 8 miles, got me out of my funk.

I can still learn a few lessons.  A family with 3 kids was riding up West Canyon, one of the boys was having a fit, did not to ride the bike up hill, wanted to go home, come here him whining a quarter mile away.  Non of my business, but, pointed at him and said: there are many things in life you will not like, but, this will make you stronger, his dad said exactly.   As I was heading back down from the top, seen the family heading up, the boy was no longer whining, gave all the kids a big hu Rah and said good job, the boy had a smile on his face.

Self lesson learned - did my own share of whining about the waves starts at the STG IM, lesson for myself, suck it up butter cup.   No more whining about rough water or anything else, just train hard, do my best, let the chips fall where they may.

Tired legs from big bike and swim workout yesterday, ran 10 miles hoping to somewhat simulate running the half marathon after the bike leg of the STG IM.  Avg pace 12 minute miles, I know, slow, do what you can do.   12 min. miles pretty good pace for run/speed walking.  I tried some new shoe inserts today, Dr. Scholl Gel pad sport, did not like them.  I will stick to the RRS inserts.  I cannot decide if I will go out and ride a few miles or just take the rest of the day off.

Mind over body, tough to keep the legs going when you dog tired, going to do another dog tired brick next week.

56 miles, with Sue, Di and I forgot his name.   Good hard paced ride, taking turns keeping on pace.  around the south west end of the valley, much of the ride against the wind, hills, etc. very good training ride for the STG Half IM.   Di did about half the ride, she did a hard 19 mile run in Park City yesterday, and I forgot is name, dropped off the pace when we turned around and the Lehi turn on redwood.

Self assessment, ready for the bike ride, just keep up the hard work

Run - need two or three 12 mile runs over the next three weeks,

Swim, need to swim 5 days a week the next couple of weeks, work on keeping good form when tired, need a couple open water swims before the half, Rage Olympic distance should help with a mile open water swim.

Conclusion, training is on the right track, keep riding with Sue whenever possible, she is the Kona queen of pacing.

Who knows what will happen in the future. Races seem very hard to have security, especially longer races. There are so many views on gun control, what will be next with assault weapons? US needs to wake up, this is not about the 2nd amendment, lives at stake. Anyway, so much for my views

Me and Sylvie ran turtle wall, windy, cold.  There was a group of young guys and girls rock climbing, the stopped and clapped as we ran by.   Kinda there way to give a tribute to runners.   I pray this is not a change for runners, the freedom, the spirit, priceless.

DNFed Rage Olympic distance tri today, this is getting old,  B needs to become a better rough water swimmer.  When the swim started, hey, I got this made, just a little choppy, swam a bit over half way, the wind from the north stared up, not again,  swam hard to try and reach the green bouy, was not making much progress according to the shore patrol boat, finally called over a Kayak to take a short break, then tried again, was darn wearing me out, tried a breast  stroke, called the kayak again to take another break and tried again. Well, finally packed it in.  I have been upset with myself all day, give up Tris, passing thought, go to sprints only, a little more than a passing thought, finally talked to Sylvie about my thoughts, just need more rough water swimming, more work, more work.   Keena was there watching me today, so sad.   did the 24 mile bike, hilly course, tougher than expected.

Well, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.   I love swimming open water swells.

Should I post this darn thing or not.

Sounds like a solid workout day to me! Do you train on bikes that aren't road bikes so the effort seems less when you're racing, or does the route you took today require a tougher bike?

From Brent on Sat, Apr 27, 2013 at 20:17:30 from 70.208.8.156

QP, you are a smart pirate, the road bike has a 11/27 cassette and the Tri bike has a 11/28 cassette. so, the Tri bike has one more easier gear, took the road bike to simulate feeling of legs going up snow canyon after 40 miles of riding. Your are smart, all training has a purpose. My saving grace is the bike, good hard bike puts me in the position to finish the race before the dead line. My stately with the bad knees is different that others. Gearing so so important on a Tri bike, some riders have a triple.
