Running Accomplishments:

Stay in the game, keep in the moment - have conquered a few of the holy grails of running - sub 3hr marathon, ran Boston and qualified for Boston at Boston, 10K PR under 6 min miles, won a couple of 5Ks in my early days of running, running for 30 years and ran 39 marathons.  The transistion to the back of the pack has not been easy, but, acceptance, stay in the game, root for others, enjoy the rest of the journey.  Another off the bucket list second =  Provo Half IM -  have done 6 open water Tris and 6 pool Tris.  Gave the STG IM a good Tri, hope to take another shot at the IM.

Short-Term Running Goals:

 2013 Race Plan - STG Half IronMan, Lake Mead Rage Olympic distance, STG spring relay tri, STG half marathon, STG marathon, Cozumel IM, Utah Summer Games Triathlon at Gunlock, Murray 5k with family and Utah Half Distance Triathlon, 187 mile red rock relay,  STG marathon,

*note of clarification - cross training miles from biking and swimming calculated as follows: (as someone may wonder) 20 mile an hour bike = 5 cross training miles (those not familar with a 20 mph pace, good bike effort for long distance,  swimming, convert 1 hour swimming to 5 cross training miles.  For those that do not swim much, great cardio workout.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Enjoy the Swim, Bike Run thru Life - Hope to Run a Few Races Support Sylvie - Be a good coach   - Support Jenna, Jeremy, Taylor and Bonnie - my kids are now into running, who would of thunk it.  long term goals, recover from the ankle sprain, accept was it, have fun racing, mountain biking, faster swimming.

Personal:

BSRools, the B stands for Brent and the S for Sylvie.  The Rools come from my personal running rools over the years: Never complain once the run starts, allways pick up the pace into the wind and always pick up the pace on a hill. If someone whines, pick up the pace.  Once a goal is set, no whining, regardless of setbacks.  We were running when running was not Kool.   Kool comes from a race story, ran my first race, 5K wearing a "beanie that had "Kool Aid Kid"

Early morning, bike 30 min. elip 30 min (good effort).  Hope to get the brace today.  got the brace. 

Brace report:  Red like the Utes, go utes.  Ran 5 miles with stops about every 1/2 to adjust the brace.  The pace, well who's counting?  It was nice to get out and sweat like a dog, chase Sylvie and feel the fight, determinatin and spirit of running.  I really miss that gut it out feeling.  The brace guy, Ben Criddle of BYU fame, said it will take about a month to adapt, well, good thing, a month is what I have. 

It is good I love gut it out, I will get all the gut it out feeling I want over the next month.  The brace weight is about three running shoes heavy and some chafing on the upper thigh.  The challenge is how to run smooth, regardless of the pace.  My plan for the week, every other day, 5 on thursday, 6 on saturday and hopefully 6, 6, 10 the next week with a long run of 15 before St. George. 

Thoughts of the day:  I have spent 27 years trying to run in the top 10% at races and place in my division, with some success.  I have met and talked to many runners towards the front, it is time to get to know runners in the rear 10%.  (I will need to learn a new language?)

Lastly, I am starting some new PRs, not time or place PRs:  How many runners I can talk to in a marathon;  how many hi fives, how many low fives, how many gus does a gu eater eat - can I set a record - goal 20 gus at St. George.  Lastly, find out why runners at the back of the pack run marathons?  I will bet it is not to just finish.  My race entry at St.George will not be a record of 26 splits, it will be a race story of communication with the running spirit.

Tom, Kerry: Thanks much, it is the spirit of runners, both of you included, that keep me determined. The quest: can running without fast pace or place, be the thing. I am going to read some George Sheehan over the next month. Mind and running spirit training.

Brent, did the brace help the pain? When I ran Tucson last December, I was just coming off knee recovery. I was out of shape and knew, I would not get a very good time. I made the trip with the Wild Bull, Steve and spouses. We had a very fun time. I ended up running a 3:44, not a very good time. But, I had so much fun, I met alot of very cool people. I was so impressed and inspired with the effort of some of the slower runners. They may not be breaking records, but they are giving everything they have. I met people from many different states, actually had time to talk for a change. Most of the people I met, were very successful in life. So, maybe part of the anwser to your question, Why do they run? They run, because they are winners. They don't take a back seat in life and thats why they are successful. Just like you, Brent. (Sorry for the novel)

Jody, thanks, can always count on you. Hey, Mike, I was inspired reading your comments. Your right, everyone has an interesting story. No pain running with the brace, only issue, darn clunky and slow to run with. I am hoping it is a matter of getting to know each other. Goldilocks and the three bears? Who is mama and baby bear? How about MJ Hammer and the tough as Nails? That seems like a better fit?

Sorry havent blogged in awhile. Way to go Brent in keeping up some running and cross-training and handling the brace and injections. One step at a time kool-aid kid and you will get to the higher levels again.

Running in the back, I guess i can tell you about that. Most of us are quiet because of the huffing and puffing for air, although there are also the gabbers, some who talk to much and get ya a little irritated to run faster to get away from them.

Big changes for us, no longer in Utah, have moved to Washington State and live on the Olympic peninsula opposite of Victoria British Columbia. Have slowly started running again, so nice here to run - nice temps, good trails, shade etc. I run at different parks while Alexander (11 years old) is running with the high school team (15 to 18 years old). Im slowly getting into regular running pattern
