Running Accomplishments:

Stay in the game, keep in the moment - have conquered a few of the holy grails of running - sub 3hr marathon, ran Boston and qualified for Boston at Boston, 10K PR under 6 min miles, won a couple of 5Ks in my early days of running, running for 30 years and ran 39 marathons.  The transistion to the back of the pack has not been easy, but, acceptance, stay in the game, root for others, enjoy the rest of the journey.  Another off the bucket list second =  Provo Half IM -  have done 6 open water Tris and 6 pool Tris.  Gave the STG IM a good Tri, hope to take another shot at the IM.

Short-Term Running Goals:

2013 Race Plan - STG Half IronMan, Lake Mead Rage Olympic distance, STG spring relay tri, STG half marathon, STG marathon, Cozumel IM, Utah Summer Games Triathlon at Gunlock, Murray 5k with family and Utah Half Distance Triathlon, 187 mile red rock relay,  STG marathon,

*note of clarification - cross training miles from biking and swimming calculated as follows: (as someone may wonder) 20 mile an hour bike = 5 cross training miles (those not familar with a 20 mph pace, good bike effort for long distance,  swimming, convert 1 hour swimming to 5 cross training miles.  For those that do not swim much, great cardio workout.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Enjoy the Swim, Bike Run thru Life - Hope to Run a Few Races Support Sylvie - Be a good coach   - Support Jenna, Jeremy, Taylor and Bonnie - my kids are now into running, who would of thunk it.  long term goals, recover from the ankle sprain, accept was it, have fun racing, mountain biking, faster swimming.

Personal:

BSRools, the B stands for Brent and the S for Sylvie.  The Rools come from my personal running rools over the years: Never complain once the run starts, allways pick up the pace into the wind and always pick up the pace on a hill. If someone whines, pick up the pace.  Once a goal is set, no whining, regardless of setbacks.  We were running when running was not Kool.   Kool comes from a race story, ran my first race, 5K wearing a "beanie that had "Kool Aid Kid"

Arc machine tempo workout, 1 hour - PR for 1017 calories burned.  12 minutes cool down on the spin bike.  Avg HR  151

5k wake up on saturday, I need tempo type workouts at least twice weekly.  I want to set my bum knee PR for the 5K, like to be under 9 minute miles either at Ogden 5k or Art Attack.  It seems silly to think 9 minutes miles could be a PR, my real 5k PR is under 6 minute miles.

This reminds of Myron (Navy buddy), since passed away, when he found out he had MS, he said, if your given a lemon, make lemonade.  Thinking of this always brings me back to a peaceful place when I get down about my running situation.

That Arc machine should guarantee your finish before sunset STG goal, LOL!

Ya know, I kinda feel like the 9 min mile guy myself. The last 6 weeks, thats pretty much been my pace. Question for you, I know you have ran enough that you have experienced this. So, in training for Ogden, like I said no fast miles. One difference, I will be 100% healthy, never had that in any race. If I try to light the fire, will it be there?

I know how you feel entering the first few races coming off of an injury, but I suspect there is an added dimension to your situation. All I can say is that your training regimen and tenacity thus far in the recovery process has been exemplary and utterly impressive to us all. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you need to re-prove yourself through your times; you have already done that, both through race times in the past and through your beastly mentality in the present. That being said, keep up the good work. You're an animal; rock on.....

Mike, interesting question, I had a similar situation one year at St. George, had a hamstring issue and did not run 6 weeks before the marathon, ran easy to half way and then gave it the gas, ran a 3:12. It can be done, the question, how early would you go for it. We know you have the speed from your training last yar. I would say run how you feel, maybe to mile 11 or top of the dam at 17.5 is a good place to go it if you feel good. Also, I always use the guts factor, if you crash, how many miles can you run on guts? I know from experience about 8 miles to the finsih, my pace slows down about 1 min a mile if I'm done.

Nevels - thanks, really appreciate the comments.

I'm sure your knees aren't up to running speed, but you're sure keeping up the cardio despite it!! Awesome workout...hopefully the knee eventually catches up to the rest of your body!!

oh...any suggestions about tapering for Ogden?

So I've been thinking that I need to work on my back muscles and abs because my back ended up being more sore than my legs after the century ride! I think I need to take a page from your training log and paste it into mine, or actually do the xtraining and strength exercises :( haha.
