AM - 6 miles - really windy with tropical storm Debby pounding away.  95% humidity.   Missed my chance at a second run yesterday - lengthy flight delays --so I think that threw my body off a bit this morning.  Took almost 4 miles to feel normal.  Right calf is sore just above the achilles tendon - could be overuse - but may be from hoofing around in NYC in business shoes for a couple of days.  Will keep an eye on it. 

PM - 12 miles on the treadmill - had the HR monitor on for about 25 mins and was holding steady at just under 138 at 7:24 pace - so I removed it, and then pushed the pace slightly to 7:19 for the rest of the run.  Girl on the treadmill next to me seemed to be intent on "one-upping" me each time I matched her pace - so I let her go - this wasn't a race for me.   Good runner though, she stayed on for an hour at 7:13 pace.   My calf/achilles was tight and tender to walk before the run but really was not an issue during the workout.  Stretched it out afterwards and used the foam roller too.

Indeed - lots of things being disrupted from normal life - road closures, beach erosion, trees and branches down etc.

I have to fly to Phoenix Wednesday - hoping for a few nice runs in some drier desert air. Will go out early in the morning or later in the evening for my runs.

Heh...yeah I just checked the weather - you are not joking. High of 113?? Feels-like temp at 7:30 am was 90. It will be dry though!

Nice treadmill race:)

Watch your calf: most lower limb injuries start with niggles in the soleus/gastrocnemius junction (where the 'calf' joins the achilles). Do you have crepitus (creaking/grating) when you stretch the tendon? If so, you need the area 'stripping' - hurts like hell, but will stop problems from developing.

If you don't have crepitus, then the muscle/tendon might be going into spasm. If this is the case, don't stretch; do the opposite - find a position of ease ( use your hand to bend the knee and you'll ease the muscles in the lower limb area) and press your thumb (not too hard) into the most acute area of pain and hold for 90 seconds. You'll feel the tendon/muscle pulse at some point - that's a good sign: the brain is sending a signal to the muscle telling it that all is ok and it eases out of spasm. Also, this is what you should do if you're running and you suddenly get pain in the 'calf' area. Do not stop and stretch; stop and ease and press. That's 50 bucks lad:)

Bam - thanks - no crepitus. Tried the active release a couple of times. Not sure there is a spasm either. Took some Aleeve - which has anti-inflamatory properties, last night, and the soreness completely disappated. Appreciate the advice not to stretch it though.
