3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over! 




Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.


Personal:

50 year old, trying to defy gravity and time

Used to be faculty at the University of Arizona (biostatistics).  Currently manager of the statistics and data management group for companion diagnostics (biomarkers) at Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. (Roche diagnostics).  We evaluate protein biomarkers that can be used to direct drug therapy that would be most effective based on individual characteristics (personalized medicine).

1:45:31(52:32/52:58).  Jeremy Ranch Road.  Ran much faster (over a minute at mile 5) than last week.  Was suprised actually, since I felt horrible the whole time.  When I feel badly I actually run faster, in part to get the run over with, and in part because I feel so bad that I don't feel any better when I slow down ;-).  I had a really awful headache all day ... it felt a little better while I was running (dilation of blood vessels?).  Anyway, because I was running faster this week, the run was likely longer than 12 miles.  I did not negative split - but I did not really try.  It was a better overall effort than last week - but the hills on the way back took their toll.

AM: (1:09:33, 8 miles). Ran up Dry Creek Canyon Trail and back. I started out on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and then debated the whole way whether I was going to run up the canyon or run to 11th and run on the road. I decided on the canyon, despite the fact that it has been many many months since I have run the trails (and almost a year since I broke my wrist - proving that I am not any good at running on these trails). It was hard, but it was fun and I made the right decision!

Preblogging, in case it is late (and dark) before I get my afternoon run in

PM: (41:54, 4.5+ miles). Liberty Park.  I ran a little longer than 4.5 (ran to the bathroom before I started the run).  Felt a little better than I had expected (starting out was tough but once I warmed up it felt better).

1:13:43  Ran with Anna up Wasatch Drive.  Very slow - my legs are tired today.  So far, it is not the best of luck days -- I dropped my *white* sweater coming in from the car to the office - it got all this yucky dirt that will not brush out!!  I tried to wash it in the sink, now I have a wet, dirty, yucky sweater to wear!!   oh well, I could wear a running top!

AM:(1:28:55, 10.5+ miles, 6 miles @ steady state pace (~7:47-7:54 pace)). 7 laps on the grass in Liberty Park, 1.5 laps (~2.25 miles, 20:02 (8:50 pace) then 11:52 (7:54), 11:52 (7:54), 11:41 (7:47), 11:48 (7:52), 1.5 laps (21:37, ~9:00 -- this was longer than 2.25 because there was an annoying guy running on the wood chip path that would speed up to catch me, then drop back, then speed up ... I was trying to run really easy to cool down and I had to get away from him (and I did not want to sprint) - so I ran to the outside of the park for about 1/4 of a lap and let him get ahead of me. Anyway - I was pretty happy with this run. Although it is pretty flat it was on the grass/mud that tends to slow me down, and I think it is a tiny bit (maybe 100 meters) longer than 1.5 miles/lap. Good effort, finished pretty strong and got a good workout. When I first started the run I would have been happy with 8 min pace, since my legs did not feel 'tired', but they felt like they were not very responsive (and I have been averaging a stressful 4 hours of sleep a night lately -- just nerves and tight work schedule).

PM:(3.5 miles, 31:24). 11th avenue, in the dark!  I did not get out before it was dark.  The scariest part was when the cyclist with no lights on his bike came zooming down the hill as I was going up - I screamed!  I did not see him until he was right in front of me.  I have a lot respect for people who do the ultras in the dark, and even on trails!  Granted, had I worn my headlamp I might have been able to see the ground better, but even so I am sure it a little disconcerting to run in the dark all night long!

1:06:29.  "Easy run" up Virginia to 11th, down Memory Grove Park and up 2nd.  I have always thought this to be a pretty tough run.  Today I was thinking that what makes it tough is that the hard parts are pretty hard (long, steep uphills), but the easy parts are super easy (downhill/very flat) and overall it is only 1/3 hard and 2/3 easy -- so, this is actually an "overall" easy run ;-).

AM:(59:05, 6.5 miles). Ran with Dean down to Liberty Park. Then he took off and I ran 2 laps on the outside of the park on the grass and then home, I added on a bit on the end (near our house) it is likely that this was longer than 6.5 ... but not by too much.

PM:(31:33, 3.5 miles) ... very slow run on the grass at Liberty Park.
