3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over! 




Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.


Personal:

50 year old, trying to defy gravity and time

Used to be faculty at the University of Arizona (biostatistics).  Currently manager of the statistics and data management group for companion diagnostics (biomarkers) at Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. (Roche diagnostics).  We evaluate protein biomarkers that can be used to direct drug therapy that would be most effective based on individual characteristics (personalized medicine).

1:49:23 - ouch! (54:03 out/ 55:23 back) We went to Jeremy Ranch Road today -- a little more than 6500ft elevation - no shade but a tad cooler because of the elevation gain.  Was probably about 85F but the sun was pretty strong.  Anyway, it is a dirt road about 7.5 miles long total, rolling hills but essentially downhill out and uphill back.  It is always a tough run, but really good for training.  Anyway, we drop water at 4 1/2 miles into the run (so we can get hit the water 2 times on the run).  Someone picked up our water!!  Not a good day to not have water - especially since we aren't really used to the heat yet (and at 6500 ft I get dehydrated a little easier).  Dean was smart and cut his run a little short to compensate.  I, being not as smart, did not.  I turned around at 1:04:05, probably a little bit past the 6 mile mark - at this point I did not feel too bad.  By 10 miles into it I was hurting.  I was so thirsty and hot ... I wasn't really afraid of serious illness (since it was only 12 miles), but I was starting to get stomach cramps ... luckily it was at this point I only had 1/2 mile to go ... Then I drank too much water too fast and threw up.  I feel much better now, though I still can't eat, I feel more hydrated and am back down to 4300 ft  ;-)   I guess we will have to hide our water better next time.

I can't believe someone took your water! I'm glad you are OK! That could be so dangerous!

Well, I am pretty sure they thought it was trash (although you would have thought they would have noticed that there was condensation on the outside of the bottle from the cool water!). I kind of freaked out when I noticed it was gone, and then I just slowed down a lot! The last few hills were really tough I have to say!

Dean is pretty sick right now ... even though he cut his run short (he turned around at 50 mins which for him is about 7 miles) he is feeling it now. We are kind of used to this after running in the South for so long -- the first few long runs of the summer are almost always pretty painful until you acclimate -- the heat/altitude does affect me, even though I am used to it.

Did you get my personal message yesterday? I had read on Jody's blog about you getting in, but did not want to spoil the suprise on your blog -- but wanted to be one of the very first to congratulate you!! I was watching the blog every hour to see if you had posted!!

I did get your private email! Thanks for being excited for me. It's hard to tell non running friends how excited I am about it because they just don't get why in the world I could be so excited about training for and running that many miles! So I'm really glad I've got a lot of running friends who "get it"!

Tom says thanks for the Father's Day wish. I hope Dean feels better really soon! We all need to get use to the new temps.
