10 mile: 1:13:35 (2009) (1:12:15 split in 1/2 marathon, 2011)

marathon: 3:19:15 (2013)

Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

1:04:29.  Probably closer to 7.5 + change, because: GILA MONSTER sighting #2!!!! yea!  I was finishing up the trail part of the run and there he/she was right in the middle of the trail.  I had just passed 2 young women on the trail who were walking a little puppy so I turned around and ran back up to them (~1/4 mile) so I could warn them to pick up the puppy (I am pretty sure the Gila Monster could kill a puppy either with its neurotoxin or its sharp teeth) and let them get a look at it.  Wouldn't you know, it left by the time I had gotten back! darn.  But still wow, twice in as many weeks!

Lots of folks out and about on "my" trail today.  I saw a couple hikers (besides the young women/puppy combo), a mountain biker, and one super fit trail runner/ultra runner guy.  I am sure this guy was either a local elite ultra runner or trail runner.  He was cooking down the trail and just had the look of an ultra runner -- and he was super friendly, which in my mind is much more indicative of people who run a lot - sort of a "size you up" as "kindred spirit" kind of person.

I am so excited, my Nexus One should be in today -- and I will be installing Android 2.2 on it ASAP, I have been holding out on buying a new phone while I contemplated an Android versus iPhone -- and because I am a t-mobile customer this was a big decision (since Dean and my Mom are on my account they would have to switch carriers if I did).  When Android 2.2 came out I was SOLD ... I love Google, and I can't wait to see what their phone (and more importantly their operating system) can do!!

Have a great day bloggers!

i love when i pass friendly runners.

let me know what you think of the phone! i've been thinking of going to the iPhone for my next one. i am currently a verizon user and would have to switch though.

You're a very fit friendly runner your own self.

I'm in the dark ages when it comes to phones. I can make phones calls and text. That's about it. Oh, and I can play sudoku.

We want Gila Monster pix! Especially if you're going to have a cool new phone. You'll want to try out the camera right? Smartphones are so awesome. Congratulations. And I will still love you even though..."I'm a Mac."

From KP on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 14:29:04 from 65.208.22.26

sno, i'm a mac too :)

From Bonnie on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 14:31:45 from 64.119.33.134

Sorry Sno, so far all my gila sightings have been while I have been running ... so no pictures available (I don't carry anything when I run).

I "almost" went to the iphone -- it was just that Froyo (android 2.2) is really really tied to the web, instead of apps, and I like Google -- a lot!

I know you will love your new phone, but I'm not sure what you are talking about with the Google thing. I have a web browser on my iPhone and use it all the time. Google, Bing, whatever I want.

another sighting!? very cool. great choice on the new phone as well.

From Bonnie on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 13:37:38 from 64.119.33.134

Sno, Here is my "very rudimentary understanding" about the phones - there are now 3 types of smartphones:

iphone - basically uses proprietary Apple operating system , you can "surf" the web because there are applications that sit on top of the operating system and connect to the internet.

Android phones - HTC is the company that makes the phones themselves and most of them use Windows-based operating systems. Again, these access the internet by using applications that sit on top of the operating system and allow you to connect.

Google's Nexus One - HTC makes the phone, Google developed the operating system (called Android, now they are on version 2.2). Since Google made the operating system the connectivity to the internet is built into the operating system (so it is super fast). It is also sort of "open-source" -- meaning developers can actually make changes to the operating system of their Android phone. It is a very cool idea and "less" closed than the Apple and Microsoft operating systems. More geek-friendly.

The Nexus One looks a lot like the iPhone, but it is much faster. It is possible that the new G4 iPhone will be as fast, but since they are a more proprietary software company it takes a while to upgrade systems, and Google has managed to make significant improvements to their operating system in 5 months since it first came out -- mainly because they let programmer geeks work on things ;-).

Allie -- I know, I can't believe I have seen so many Gila Monsters. I told Dean yesterday that I thought the reason people say they are rare is because they are rare if you only go hiking once a week or so, but when you are out every (ding dong) day you have a much higher probability of seeing them. I am sure there is a good homework problem in there somewhere ;-).

If a runner runs twice a day, six days a week, for an average of 8 miles on each run and there are 4 gila monsters per square mile on the route that the runner runs, what is the likelihood that the runner will see a gila monster during any given run?

From allie on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 18:05:16 from 67.177.0.102

what is...29.99%?

From Bonnie on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 18:24:38 from 128.196.228.134

hmmm. To a statistician, when you say "likelihood" we start thinking distributions and probability but that problem sounded more like an algebra problem.

The statistics problem would be:

Assume the distribution of number of gila monsters in Tucson follows a Poisson distribution with mean= 1 gila monsters/mile. What is the probability that Bonnie will see at least 2 Gila Monsters during a 2 week period, assuming she runs 60 miles/week?

From allie on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 18:26:22 from 67.177.0.102

i am sticking with my original answer. ;)

From Bonnie on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 18:31:47 from 128.196.228.134

;-) 100% ... but that would drop down to 34% if the mean was 1 gila monster/100 miles.

From KP on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 22:17:01 from 98.81.36.38

i learned about poisson distribution this past semester in hel... i mean stats.

i am going to go with allie. she is smarter than me.

From allie on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 22:22:03 from 67.177.0.102

the one thing i remember about poisson distribution is how much i like saying poisson.
