Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

AM: (9 hilly miles, 1:19:17). Beautiful day, a storm blew through on Sunday night and brought some unseasonably cool temperatures into town ... it was great to run in 70 degrees again. Unfortunately it should be up in the 100s again by Thursday. I tried to time a little of this run, just to see how my effort was in relation to pace. My first milestone (Crestview Road - the name kind of sums it up, it is one of many "crests") took 18:21 on the way out and 17:15 on the way back (it is predominately uphill on my way home). Not too surprising since it takes me a while to warm up. Just worthwhile to note, maybe.

PM: (4 miles easy).

I saw a mule deer today (usually I see white tail, it is not really that common to see mule deer in the Tucson mountains), and about 7 javelina crossing the road (I was glad they made it before the car came down the hill!!!).

I hope you are all having a good day and that Spring is back ... weird about the last Winter days you had last weekend!

It was SO nice out on my run this morning, too.

unseasonably cool for sure...utah broke records yesterday for the latest measured snowfall and lowest recorded high temperatures. but today you would never know it...the sun is out and everything is dry. weird. nice job shaving off time even on the uphill. it seems you are always running on a hilly route. just curious, are most of your routes undulating loops or uphill/downhill out-and-backs?

Burt -- Enjoy!! I know I am going to try to walk as much as possible today!

Allie, I had heard about the snow! wow! I am so lucky to have wonderful undulating hills - there are a couple that are pretty long (1.5 - 2 miles starting off just as an uphill grade and then getting progressively steeper towards the top). I was thinking about this yesterday, I would say that the steepest of them are not quite as steep as Sunnyside Drive - more like coming up to University/Wasatch Dr. from Liberty Park. Then there are some that are literally "roller coasters" short (800 meters) but about 4 or 5 of them in a row. They are fun - in a car they can make you a bit sick ;-). My trail runs are pretty much all uphill out and downhill back (the downhill is scary because it is rocky and I am generally tired from the uphill climb). You have to come out and see it sometime (not for the next few months). Good luck getting used to your new schedule - I thought you were finished?

i have been searching for more hilly routes that incorporate both hills and flat sections. i just don't like running up one way and back down the other---i think pounding downhill is what causes my hip ailments. i was curious what you do because you are a rock when it comes to consistent training without injury.

as for school - they had us participate in spring commencement since there won't be another one until december. the program doesn't actually end until mid-june. i have two more courses to finish and then i am REALLY done. almost there...

Hi Allie, I agree, I think long uphills and then long downhills are tough on your body. The "best" place near SLC (in my opinion) is Jeremy Ranch Road (off of I-70 just before Park City) -- it is good because it is more of a rolling course in addition to being more uphill than down on the way back (depending on where you start ;-)). I think partly what happens is if you go uphill out and downhill back you are tired on the downhill -- and your form is sloppy, even though cardiovascularly you can run pretty quick. Alternatively, you can start at a downhill jog first and then run uphill, this might at least make it a little less stressful? I am sure Paul knows of some good Logan routes like that? The other thing, for me, is that I rarely run on anything other than dirt (I am so lucky that we have lots of that around here in the wild west) - less pounding and it slows you down!

I have read somewhere (Jack Daniels? Lydiard?), "it is rare that someone injures themselves going uphill".

Congratulations on your nice weather. You deserve it.

Thanks C in C - I think we ALL deserve good weather, but we take what we can get don't we? Good luck with the caulking ...or uncaulking.

A totally agree with you about running on dirt. I run as few miles as possible on pavement, and am blessed with endless trails around here.
