Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

1:54:31.  Very hilly mountain run, two laps + a little under a mile added on in the middle (59:17, 55:34).  I tried to get out earlier, but the best I could manage was 7:30 and it was already 70F, it is 87F and sunny now.  Now that it is hot, I plan on running at least 10-20 secs/mile slower than I normally would (well, I don't know exactly what pace, I guess I would say I start out running no faster than 65-75% effort).  Most of the time, this works fine and I can pick it up the later part of the run - or not if it is really hot out.

So, today I ran on the big dirt road that goes through Saguaro Park West.  This is were the BIG snakes live ;-).  It is a safe place to run though, because even if I see a snake the road is plenty wide enough to go around them.  I saw two snakes, one live and one dead, neither of them were rattlesnakes (they were much too pretty and colorful - although one of them was easily as big around as my forearm).  The VERY COOLEST thing?  I saw my first Gila Monster, he/she was much larger than the one in this picture, about the size of a small cat (larger than a kitten - maybe an adolescent cat).  They say that a Gila Monster bite is the most painful desert creature bit there is ... I did not put my hand down to test it out -- it did not seem like it cared that much about me watching him/her.  It was very pretty, bright orange spots/lines.  Very very cool - I sped it up after this, because I wanted to check the internet to make sure it was a Gila Monster!

Today is the final day of NCAA PAC 10 track and field regionals (as our own Ruthio knows ... although I think she is in the Mountain region).  Anyway - after 7 events Arizona women are ahead of U of Oregon ... wow.  Of course, the 1500 and the 5K are today, so who knows what will happen; not to mention the 800m!  Still, I was happy to Arizona in number 1 status, even if it is short lived.

Have a wonderful day resting and enjoying your family bloggers.  Congratulations to all of our awesome Ogden Marathon and 1/2 Marathon runners!

That's awesome that you saw a Gila Monster! I've never heard of those. Very interesting. They are certainly pretty.

You are very brave. How fast can snakes move? Is it safe to just run around them or can they lash out as you go by?

Great wildlife sightings!

How cool is that? A Gila Monster!

Those track and field events are very exciting; I wish I could actually watch this one! I'm an Oregon fan.

Carolyn, snakes don't really go "after" us. They will bite if you threaten them (and they see stepping on them as threatening, even if you don't mean to) - but by in large they just want to do their own thing. The rattlesnakes rattle to let you know they are there - it is kind of nice of them actually. Most of the bites here are kids playing with them when they find them -- or people who accidentally step on them. So, I am just hyper vigilant in hopes I can see them before I step on them ;-).

U of Oregon women just dominated the second day. They won every single event - they won by 100 points! But U of A was second and scored over 10 points higher than they had ever score!!

I'm sorry, but anything with "snake" or "monster" in their name is not something I want to see on the trail! You are a much braver woman than me!

ha ha ha Kim, or "dragon" either probably (kimono dragon! I saw one of these on a run in Australia a few years back)!!
