10 mile: 1:13:35 (2009) (1:12:15 split in 1/2 marathon, 2011)

marathon: 3:19:15 (2013)

Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

Ok -- first of all MichelleL is extremely sweet and supportive, secondly, I overestimated my fitness today.  I got up at 4:30 to meet Michelle for a "tempo/pace test" for my upcoming race. I overestimated my fitness level and was not able to keep the pace for 5 miles. After a couple mile warm-up we started out pretty slow (7:45, felt fast to me) and then tried out 7:30 (still felt fast), I wanted to stop at 3 miles, but Michelle kept me going for another mile (7:35) but I just did not have it go more than 4 miles. I wanted to -- but it just felt bad.

It was really nice to meet Michelle (though embarassing to be such a wimp), so the morning was not a total loss.

I think this probably just tells me that I need to readjust my expectations for my race ... it is disappointing, but the way it is. I guess I won't quite my day job anytime soon!!

Keep dry bloggers ...

Readers-for an alternate version of the workout (the version where Bonnie has a good workout) see my blog :)

Bonnie don't be to hard on yourself I did the same thing yesterday. Sometimes we just are not feeling it, at least you did have Michelle to get you through the hard stuff. I think these workouts make us stronger. Maybe next time I can be there, I would have come but didn't know if I could handle two tempo workouts in a row. Great job!

Thanks Josse, I am trying to keep things in perspective. Perhaps tomorrow it won't be so "fresh" of a disappointment and I will be able to look at it more analytically. I actually was thinking on the way home that I might bag the race, but I really need to rest on it before I make a decision like that!

I completely understand that you couldn't make it, next time I we can co-ordinate these runs better (it is hard because we both are so close to our races that we don't have quite the flexibilty that we might).

Okay, I read both accounts and am wondering if you both ran together or not :)

Actually, it sounds like a good tempo effort especially when dealing with winds. Don't discount the 4:30 am wakeup's effect either (I'd be crawling the whole way). I wouldn't bag the race....one workout doesn't necessarily give you an accurate fitness assessment....you've got to look over your recent training and races to get a good picture of that. Plus, you might just surprise yourself come race day.

Just think of this as discomfort in the bank....and you'll be better equipped to deal with it the next time around.

Good job!

ha ha ha ... yes, I was going to use the 4:30am wake-up as an excuse, but did not want to point out that I am also NOT a morning person (though I am sure Michelle recognized it right away, even though I was a little more awake half-way into my hour drive to Provo ;-) ).

Thank you guys for the "chin up", it does help ... maybe I will internalize it in my sleep!

I'm living proof that you can drive for over an hour but not really be awake. Scary? You bet. But it 'splains why you'd still be sleepy.

All the little things can throw you off and make you work harder. The point is you put the work in and you'll reap the benefits with good nutrition and rest. They you'll really reap the benefits when you go race and wonder who's legs they attached on you when you weren't looking because they're moving *much* faster than yours do!

Bonnie, bonnie, Bonnie, every run is a new day. Effort is what counts, MichelleL's account says great effort.

Stay Kool, Look Up, you have had some great training over the last few weeks, your PR day is coming. B of BS Rools out
