Short-Term Running Goals:

~~3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23)~~ -- whoohoo!

~~Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level~~ (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?). You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit? That is what I would like! Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

Personal:

50 year old, trying to defy gravity and time

Used to be faculty at the University of Arizona (biostatistics). Currently manager of the statistics and data management group for companion diagnostics (biomarkers) at Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. (Roche diagnostics). We evaluate protein biomarkers that can be used to direct drug therapy that would be most effective based on individual characteristics (personalized medicine).

1:20:13 -- Poppington Park to City Creek Canyon - nice and easy, it snowed, it "sunned" - we had it ALL!!

Ran into Adam on his way out (I had never met him before, but I knew he ran that way often from his lab and he was wearing a fastrunningblog shirt -- so I said, "Hi Adam!", he never missed a stride even though we had a short conversation it was great to meet him).

Only in Utah do you get "it snowed, it sunned" in one run! Gotta love it!

Hi Kim,

It is so true, this was the second run this week where I was chilly and hot and then chilly again!!

Glad you had a nice run with Tom today -and that he was able to keep the monster at bay (you notice how I made that his responsibility -- this was no accident ;-) ).

What is up with your knees? Did you get a foam roller yet? I am sure chocolate will cure this as well!

Actually my knees are doing good at the moment. I think a few days rest did them good. Now I am more aware after a higher mileage week to be careful the beginning of the next week. So far, so good. I have a 14 miler planned for Saturday, so that will be a good test for me.

So, regarding your hamstring ... I would use the foam roller for the belly of the muscle up to just below your gluts. For the insertion point (that I think is giving you the problem) I would actually use a tennis ball. But I would not use it directly behind your knee, but slightly above ... does that make sense? You are feeling the pain directly behind the center of you kneecap aren't you? (that is where my pain was) -- well, if it is the same problem I had the actual "problem area" is about 2 inches above there (believe me you will feel it when you find it). Be careful messing around directly behind your knee ... there are lots of little nerves and blood vessels there ...

I have actually replaced all of my static stretching with the foam roller (though I still do dynamic stretching - e.g., swinging legs forward and backward and such, too keep the hip flexors loose), so far it has helped me a lot!

Hi Adam,

It was so cool to meet you, I have actually thought we would run into each other some day since we both run that route from our offices!

I am running the Salt Lake 1/2 as a training run, and running a nice, flat, sea level course in Sacramento (American River Parkway 1/2 marathon) in May. Although one of my friends is trying to talk me into doing a different 1/2 a week later in Santa Barbara.

When is your next race?

Sounds like you have a good mix of 1/2's in the works. Santa Barbara is a cool area. It is fun that you are looking at a good travel schedule for your running. I had tossed around the idea of the Striders Half or the SLC 10-miler but I have decided that I'm not going to race again until SLC Marathon on April 19th.
