I want to accomplish my short term goals first... Once I do that, I will have an idea of what to expect long term... 44 yrs old now and since I've been injured free for 1 month I am jumping back on marathon training. Any recommendations for a good marathon in December 2021? What is your recommendation?

Welcome to the blog. That's a smokin' fast time for a marathon. Keep up the good work.

Welcome to the Blog! Great time in Chicago. That is on my to do list.

From Benny's on Sun, Nov 29, 2009 at 21:42:46 from 24.174.249.108

thanks for the welcoming... I just got the urges again and I'm ready to roll again... I have done 6 marathons...

2:39 Austin 05

2:32 Austin 06

2:31 Chicago 06

2:32 Greenbay 07

2:39 Fiesta Marathon 07

2:45 San Antonio 08

I pretty much ran 1 1/2 with in 06 to 07 at 90mpw...and then after that... I just ran for the heck of it... 2:39 off of 45 mpw and 2:45 off of 35 mpw...

I started reading Paul Petersen blog and some other forums and now my quest is to break 2:30 and sub 1:10 in the half.... i'm extremely motivated right now... thanks again for the welcome..

From Burt on Sun, Nov 29, 2009 at 21:50:46 from 98.177.216.165

When I read that you were trying to break 1:10 I immediately thought of Paul. He's definitely a good one to get advice from. Walter's fast, but I wouldn't believe a word he says. LOL!

Welcome to the blog!

Looks like you've got some impressive times. Any ideas what your next races will be?

From Benny's on Wed, Dec 02, 2009 at 22:45:56 from 24.174.249.108

Looking for a sub 1:10 Jan 24, 2009. I just ran a 32:10 10k in a tough course Nov 26, 2009. I can probably say I'm in 31:30 shape given that the course elevation was gruesome. I recently got the itch again to train for a marathon. My last good marathon buildup was in fall 2006 and spring 2007 after the spring marathon I didn't train as I used to. The marathon humbled me in Dec 2007 and again in Fall 2008, both marathons were low mileage buildups. My new years resolution for 2009 was to run everyday with no off days! Till this day I haven't skipped a beat! So I got the marathon itch. After reading Pauls blog and questioning him for tactics I'm on a mileage high. This whole year I have been avg around 60 to 70 mpw. NOW I AM READY to tackle a sub 1:10 and 2:30 marathon.

From Jon on Thu, Dec 03, 2009 at 09:44:05 from 138.64.2.76

Sounds great- the consistency will serve you well, and Paul is a great one for advice. I have been following a schedule he gave me for the past 2 years with great success, especially the Big Workouts. Good luck.

great mileage there Benny.

Yeah, Sam- for about 4 months in winter, the only time I run in the light is my Saturday long run. All morning and evening runs are in the dark.

you are making me scared. my time (for a dog bite) is up. I have been followed and growled at but not bitten, crossing fingers now. That bite looks big. Yikes. I had an encounter with a three-legged dog that wanted to sniff me over while out in the snow drifts. It was scary and then I tried to remain calm. I hate teeth marks in the skin.

My training is going well, but apparently not as well as yours...

Sasha- that's especially true in Logan during the very, very foggy inversions. Not so much that the runner can't see ok, but that the cars can't see so the runner has to be more cautious.

What ended up happening to the dog and owner?

From Benny's on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 23:29:08 from 24.174.249.108

Jon: The owner was cited for not having the dog on a leash. He was also cited for not having updated records. The dog was three month behind on his vaccinations.

Around a 400 fined before x-mas for the pet owner.

My suggestion for anyone that comes across this.

If you get bitten:

A. Call Police file a police report.

B. Police will call animal control.

C. Animal Control will pick up the dog and fill a report on it.

D. The ambulance will come check you out and take you to the hospital for treatment.

Owner will be fined and the dog will be held up for observation of 10 days.

The EMT just told me to wash it with soap and to put neosporin on it.

If you see dogs on the loose call Animal Control!!!!!

From Jon on Sat, Dec 12, 2009 at 00:06:59 from 75.169.144.67

a.) I don't feel tired

b.) Long runs are becoming a breeze

c.) Adapting well to mileage and quality.

So I took off at 6:50 PM for a tempo. It wasn’t raining when I started running it started to drizzle 30 minutes and it started to pour at 45 mins into the run. I headed down hillside and into the neighborhood right in front of Autozone. I did an eight mile warm-up and then the tempo 6:02, 5:57, 5:56, 6:02, 5:56. I was supposed to run a 7 mile tempo but I shut it down at 5, I was slipping while running through ankle high water. My hamstrings got a bit tight my last 2 miles were at 8:57 and 8:37 ending a 15 miler. I should have just scratched this run off. I still did it, but it suck!

Perfect weather I wish it was like this last night unfortunately that's not the way the cookie crumbled. Anyways the night was beautiful and enjoyed a really calm run. My shoes were soaked from last night and since I only have a pair of shoes I had to run in some puma shoes I use for walking lol.

Anyways till tomm!

Today I charged my Garmin 405 for 2 hrs and it stopped  at 40 mins into the run. People GARMIN 405 SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was lucky enough to see one of my athletes running. I went up to Marlene G. and asked to borrow her watch. I ended running with Marlene's watch as she left without a watch for her own run! <-- How selfish! I feel bad now! Anyways I did the workout and it felt easy.  I hope all goes as plan! I'm shooting for a sub 1:10 on a fast course! 5 weeks and showtime!!

First 10 in 1:09 and then I struggled my last 10 with a quad strain, it's a mild strain, just bought a thigh support, doing R.I.C.E. on it and strengthening my hamstrings! Gonna split my runs this whole week! Thank god for Vacations!!!!! got enough time ...

Nice run! Be careful with the strain...don't push it to an injury that is worse.

I hear you about vacations! Merry Christmas!

From Benny's on Mon, Dec 21, 2009 at 11:28:28 from 24.174.249.108

jt: yup just a mild strain that suddenly came up, I think it was the day that my hamstrings felt tight, I believe wednesday. I just went out nice and easy last night and then around mile 10 my quad got a knot and it would go off and on and then by mile 18 it was bad anyways I decided to keep it low mileage with no workouts this week, time for a recovery week ha! And yea we are on vacation! I'm a coach and we are off for 2 weeks! happy holidays to you too!

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Mon, Dec 21, 2009 at 14:06:21 from 90.201.147.113

Happy Holidays Benny, great run although with a strain, yes RICE is the best answer. :)

Still having some stomach problems. Don't know what's the problem, but I keep on getting a side stitch through out the whole run, sometimes it goes away and at others it comes back painfully.  Quad strain is gone,  but now I'm hit with a low abdominal pain. Aghh I gotta sort things out with a Dr., hopefully it ain't a hernia.
