Long-Term Running Goals: QUALIFY AND RUN IN THE BOSTON MARATHON. Personal: I am 27. Have done 33 marathons and ultras. Really trying to get in shape to get back to running the miles I want to. I love to read and worked for four years in a bookstore. I like to keep track of the books I read. Currently I work as a 6th & 7th grade history teacher at the only charter school in Berkshire County, as well as serve as the coach for the cross country team! Been experimenting as a pescatarian (eating only fish) since August 10, 2011.

| Round 2, Day #24: (Run 1) 12 miles in 1:39:36 (8:18/ mile). Felt relaxed and confident today, even though I had a rough night of ear pain. Am on some meds and resting now so hopefully I will be on the mend. Did the first 5 in 42:21 (8:28/mi), the next 5 in 41:22 (8:16/mi), and the final 2 miles in 15:53 (7:57/mi). Am going to try to get an uphill challenge or a couple easy miles in tonight before bed.

| Round 2, Day #24: 4 miles only (33:16; good for 8:19/mile) in the saga I like to call "Tales of the Sicko". I feel very lucky to have had so many people helping me this weekend between Aunt Deb, my mom, Harry, and Emma. I would not have survived without them. As my mom said, "Benn is a bad patient." I don't like non-running pain. It's funny how I can run a marathon and hurt like hell, but a tiny little ear infection and the wheels feel off. Woke up in pain and could feel the throbbing in my ears. I am on an anti-yeast med for my ear because we think I have a yeast infection. As Emm said, my ear smelled like "raw pizza dough". Maybe I can start a mobile bakery? Continued the alcohol/vinegar wash, popped lots of pain killers, and finally got some antibiotics tonight. To add insult to injury, my rear brake light was out again (we suspect a leak which is getting water in there) and while I tried to take the bulb out, I blew the fuse. Thankfully Harry and Mom helped me fix that and then I picked up new lights and window blades. Oddly enough the only time I was not in searing pain was when I was jogging. I just tried to tilt my head and relax and I did feel some of the crackling open up my ear. Just going to suffer through tomorrow and hope that it is better the longer out I go. What I learned: Thou shalt not stick Q-Tips into thine ears! A Q-Tip surprise, fresh baked ear yeast up for grabs. Take the meds.... good boy! "The pain is getting intense.... that is expected. | Round 2, Day #25: 7 miles total in 53:55 (7:42/ mile). I did 2 miles of warm up in 8:30 range and then launched into a 5 mile tempo run in 37:01, good for 7:24/ mile. Felt relaxed and good, just off balance. Did not stay at work today. Went in to make copies, and then came home. Ear has been killing me. Now it is 100% blocked, though some of the pain has subsided. However, as it is the ear I rely on more for sounds, I am effectively about 65% deaf. Teaching should be real interesting. I need to find out if Pittsfield has an ENT and see if they can operate around BART's stupidly long work hours or if I have to take more personal time. At least the run was good. I got to do some meditating and planning for the future. Excited for our vacation to Oregon as we may be moving there at some point. I need a weekend to recovery from this hell hole of a weekend. Ugh! I must go to school tomorrow, I must! Every day I'm out is another day of stress and catch up, and I think I actually worked more at home today than in a normal day at BART. Nearly pulled off 9 hours of working and made the slightest of dents in my to do list. (Blue Vibrams EHD9, EID3)

| Round 2, Day #26: 6 miles. Did it. 49:38, for 8:16/ mile. Recovery run from yesterday. Today at school was a trial but I persevered and got through it. Hearing was the hardest part. I physically feel great and the pain in the ear is gone, it is just still swollen shut. Actually started eating breakfast and lunch starting yesterday and am feeling better and eating less calories during the day. Trying to think thin to get thin! Lots of things to accomplish this year. | Round 2, Day #27: 6 miles easy recovery run in 49:35, good for 8:16/mile. Today was day 3 of my diet. Feeling good and made sure to eat both breakfast and lunch which is a weird thing for me. Ear is about 50% better. Little to no pain and some sound is coming through! Yay for no more crankiness! Continuing with my Karnazes kick I started in with his second book 50/50, which I also have already read before. I read the first 70 pages and listened to some Goo Goo Dolls. Will continue with shooting for about 1800 calories a day and see where that takes me! Lanced a really sick blood blister under my pinky toenail on my right foot before the run. It was nice though. Hurt all day walking on it but I relieved the pressure in fine form. No picture though. Drats!

| Round 2, Day #28: 3.10 miles only in 23:18, good for 7:30/ mile!! ; tempo run. Fell asleep on the couch after an exhausting day and week. Feeling better each day from the ear infection, but Friday's are my day to just let go and relax. After a wonderful dinner of spaghetti and low fat baked eggplant, I fell asleep watching an episode of "Reno 911". Got up at 8:30 and then changed and hit the ground running. Was a surreal experience and for most of the run I was in a runner's high. I don't get this often, just two or three times a year, so it was a surreal experience. It felt so easy and smooth, and I felt like I could run forever!

| Day #29: 12 miles in 1:42:08, good for 8:31/mile. Felt good and relaxed. This also pushed me to 50 miles for the week, so hooray for first 50 mile week of the year! I am actively working on my diet courtesy of myfitnesspal.com (if you have it please friend me: jamminlongtime). I need all the motivation I can get! Starting weight this week was 221#, and ended at 218#, good for a 3# loss overall. It's been a while since I saw the scale moving in this direction! During the last 2 miles I started thinking about a fellow runner, Dan Scharfman who I had the pleasure of meeting at the Mile 40 aid station of the HSV50 miler. I had already bailed but he was still pushing along, helping another runner, Lauren in her quest to finish the 50 miler as well. It was his first 50 and during the short 10 minutes I met him, I could tell this is the kind of guy you don't meet every day. He was kind, considerate, selfless, and above all, genuine. He sadly passed away at the young age of 55 last week after complications from a massive heart attack. I know he's somewhere running down the creekbeds and singletrack. I am convinced I will go back to Hancock Shaker Village and finish the 50 miler! This is the year!
