I was in Phoenix this weekend with the kids and friends and had always wanted to run this race. I really wanted to run the 10k but I didn't feel recovery was far enough along and I knew a good effort on a 5k would probably be good for me. Shake up the marathon shuffle a little. This race is huge and one of three on the same day, a 5k, a 10k and a half marathon. I would love to come down and run all three during a year when I wasn't dead from a season. The 5k is also the USATF Masters Championship so there's bound to be some good competition. I knew the Master's course record was 17:11 so I aimed for that pace but got out a little too fast with a 5:08 first mile. I paid for that, hadn't ran that pace in months so I died pretty quick. Just before mile three John Reich passed me and I pretty much let him go. I ended up breaking the Master's course record only to have John set a new one passing me, lol! It's funny how a 5k can be so long and then be over before you can do anything.
It felt good to run at some speed again and I hope this means it is time to start training and stop limping around. Gotta lose a little over 10lbs too..
