After work last night I headed up I70 out of Denver into the Front Range since I had Friday day off until 8pm. I was hoping to summit three of the Fourteeners on cross country skis; Bierstadt, Torrys and Grays. Guanella Pass is an easy trailhead to reach from the metro and most of the trail is not vertical. The trailhead itself is at 11,300 feet. I slept in the Jeep and woke up to -29 F temps. The coldest trail start I have ever had. By the time I reached Bierstadt I was cold enough to call off Torys and just head over to Evans. Made great time on the flats and downhills, faster than trail running. Super careful with the avalanche report, I never left the ridge trails. Mostly cloudy with occasional awesome periods of sun. Just freakin abnormal cold. |
