Only one day at home in the last 9 days, the rest on the road.  At least I'm sworking in warm weather!  Los Angeles for two days again.  I really had to push the workout today.  I needed a run to start setting some pace recognition for the half marathon at a distance.  Today was the first of three long runs to get some speed work into the distance.  20 mile run with 1 mile repeats; 1 mile fast and one mile recovery at pace plus two minutes.  Aiming for 5:30 repeats.

Notes:  I'm getting the feel for pace.  I can pretty much hit the pace I need without relying on the Garmin.  That's good, I was worried about that since I have not done much speed work.  After the first few repeats I noticed that the one mile recovery seemed too much time, but I needed speed over the 20 mile distance so I stuck with the plan.  At repeat mile 10 I decided it would be fun to try and hit a 5 minute mile in the workout and just missed it.  Then I paid the price for that stupidity the next two repeats.  Great workout, I gotta try this one again sometime.  Those last two mile repeats at 18 and 20 were tough!  I'm not sure that I could do this workout at altitude.  Heart rate checks at the end of repeat 10 and 14 were both at 157, so still not in the target range though.

wow. Very impressive workout. I have never seen a 20 mile workout with repeats.

See, I have to read about workouts like this after I've taken two consecutive days off. I feel like a complete looser now.

Wow, you continue to amaze me with your speed and workout approach. That is impressive and you should rock Austin!

Steve, Good workout man. If you and Rob or anyone else wants to get together let's do it. Just give a date and time.. I talked to Walter and he is game for it also.

By the way, the Oval on Saturday is good for me.

Fritz, wished I could do more consistant speed like you have been putting in. I have some work done with endurance, but not enough distance at pace. I am working in some transition runs to get the pace down again.

Jeff, I'm aiming through Austin for the Lost Dutchman Marathon in February. It has a lot of trail on it and hilly, so it's never fast, but it's such a competetive masters race. Last year 6 of the top 10 were over 40. I would love a 2:40 there. I also figure that if I continue training for that marathon, I will surive Austin on the 30th. Since I am on the slow side this spring, marathon training is making more sense.

Steve, That sounds like a great idea. I'm up skiing on Saturday so I can't make that one, but it would sure be helpful to get some training runs in with some of you guys. I need some ideas.

What's with all those slow miles you ran in the mid 7 range? Kind of wimpy don't you think?

From Steve on Wed, Jan 12, 2011 at 15:48:52 from 68.30.167.38

LOL. That's my NORMAL pace! Not going to do much more than that. How do you feel for Austin?

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Jan 12, 2011 at 15:51:48 from 205.127.70.66

I feel pretty good Steve. Hope to get in two or three good workouts in the next couple weeks that will give me a good idea of what I can do.

I have a couple ideas to run by you. Give me a call if you can in the next couple days.
