Finally, a breakthrough... Thanks to Sasha teaming with me and sharing pacesetting chores, we had a fantastic experience. He has taught me to have the confidence to run a well disciplined marathon. No wall really thanks to a good drastic week taper, good fluid intake and a large winter-spring quality base. Well they say three is a charm... Given my past history with Ogden this may have been it.

First 10 in 56:14, half in 1:14:36. Felt smooth and in control most of the way, no real bad patches except for mi 24 maybe. I think that was because I dropped a 5:17 mi at mi 23 in order to put some distance between me and Neal Gassmann and also Joe Wilson who I did not even know was there until it was almost too late! He scared the bejeebies out of me coming from behind with that last minute sprint 40 meters or so to the tape. Sprinted my guts out and literally upchucked my gatorade at the end. Made it!!! Whew.. that was too close. Marathons should not finish like that!

My hats off to all those who participated especially to Cody who had a huge PR and Paul the comeback kid with his excellent performance. Thanks again Sasha.

One more thing before I go, it was a cool experience to see horses at mi 9 gallop along side with us while we were running. It came to me right then that just like them we also were born to run.

30 days and counting, Devine Racing has not paid me.

Great job Steve. You earned that breakthrough and had it coming. Looking forward to racing with you over the summer.

I was going to ask you about Devine. I don't think 30 days is considered too out of the ordinary, but 60 days would definitely be tardy, in my book.

From ashman on Sun, May 20, 2007 at 16:43:05

I hear you Paul, its just that 30 days was the time period I was given by Scott Kerr. Don't get me wrong I am not angry, just wondering when it will arrive. Considering their past history can you blame me though?

From Paul Petersen on Sun, May 20, 2007 at 17:00:26

I definitely don't blame you!!

From Dallen on Sun, May 20, 2007 at 17:33:59

Devine Racing still owes me a Sweatshirt from 2 years ago.

From Mike K on Sun, May 20, 2007 at 17:36:39

I'll bet Ogden's check is already in your bank account.

Congratulations! Keep the PR's coming.

From Ruth on Sun, May 20, 2007 at 18:38:24

Way to go! You definitely have been achieving your Short-Term Running goal so far! Faster and Faster is right!

From Cody on Sun, May 20, 2007 at 19:08:26

Great PR and breakthru race! It was very deserved. I am impressed with your training and know you have a OQ race in you. Keep showing us how its done.

From Izzy & Zoe on Sun, May 20, 2007 at 20:13:58

Way to go Steve. I can't wait to meet you for real at WB Relay in June. Salt Lake was great and this was better. This is more like what you'd expect from a guy with a half PR of 1:07. With a good summer of training you'll be ready to fly this fall. Once again way to go.

From Superfly on Sun, May 20, 2007 at 20:31:52

Sorry Steve. LOL!

Izzy and Zoe are my dogs and they had just left a message to my wife and the name stayed in.

From Dustin Ence on Sun, May 20, 2007 at 21:15:38

Great job Steve! I really enjoyed watching the finish of the race yesterday as you stated you both were flying at the end, I was up the road a ways and it was tough to see the finish line. Great effort especially in the heat at the end. I'm looking forward to Wasatch Back!

From ArmyRunner on Sun, May 20, 2007 at 21:57:22

Outstanding job Steve. I knew you had a good performance in you. This is just a stepping stone to much more to come for you. Keep those miles up and the training consistent and I full expect to see you off to New York later this year as well. I missed you after the race or otherwise I would have congratualated you. It took some grit to dig deep and have a sprint finish in a marathon.

From Scott Browning on Sun, May 20, 2007 at 22:10:16

You are such a stud!! What a great day for you, New York has your name all over it this year.

I will keep the ponytail, I am thinking that I might do better competing as a woman, then at least I am not in your division anymore!!

From Lybi on Sun, May 20, 2007 at 22:38:09

See I told you so . . . :)

From Dave Holt on Mon, May 21, 2007 at 09:30:57

Great work Steve. I am very excited for you. All those miles and hard work are paying off. It must feel great to smash through that 2:30 barrier.

From Chad on Mon, May 21, 2007 at 14:06:32

Sub 2:30 --- Awesome Job! What a season you're putting together!

From James on Mon, May 21, 2007 at 14:29:03

Steve,

I knew you had one of those marathons in you somewhere. Great race! Way to hold off Joe Wilson in the end, I heard he paid for that foot race just as bad or worse than you did.

From ashman on Mon, May 21, 2007 at 20:38:17

Thanks everybody. I hope that you all can find the same personal triumph in your running also. I know that for myself the only thing that would be more satisfying would be to help someone else do the same. I have always wanted to coach. That would really have some meaning for me. One day perhaps.
