Studying the Japanese marathoners lately..  Interesting to see their methods and discipline being put into place.  Marathon victors are revered as godlike over there.  Looking to the past at runners like Seko and coaches such as Nakimura leaves one feeling somewhat lacksadaisical and unmotivated in comparison to say the least. So here is a famous quote from Nakimura, the coach and mentor of Toshiko Seko; Talent is limited but Effort is limtless...   Leaves me pondering for a bit today.

PM- Easy 5 miles out on the JRT.  Very peaceful and relaxing this evening.

Steve,

I would be interested in what you find in your studies. Would you mind sharing what you learn with me?

The Japanese training I've read about is similar to Van Aaken. Heavy on volume and frequency of activity throughout the day. However, I believe they picked up most of their methods from Lydiard who took a somewhat similar approach as Van Aaken. Lydiard's running is a bit more up tempo and contained hill repeats. While Van Aaken espoused running very easily very often during the day, mixing in playful amounts of speed (child's play), thought that hill repeats were not necessary due to the mechanics involved. There is more, but I'll stop there. I've found that here in the U.S. very few have the patience for these running methods.

Was reading in Trail Runner this afternoon about one Japanese coach who trains his runners on 20 seconds of all out effort followed by 10 seconds of rest repeated 8 times.

They have some interesting concepts to look at.

I have a question for you Steve? Kory and i was talking the other day and he asked me if i was going to run the pioneer day marathon. So my question for you is do you think i should run the pioneer day marathon? I heard that Sasha was not going to run it because he felt that he was not ready for it. And i was just wondering what you thought. Thanks for your help....
