Broken jaw + metal braces - 12 lbs. + awesome pacer = PR!!!!

My previous 10k PR was 48:20, and I ran 46:51 today. Hooray!

Wowowowowow! What else can I say? It is a gorgeous morning here in DC, not too cold, not too hot, probably about 50 degrees. I biked down to the tidal basin with my friend Brian, who graciously offered to stay with me the entire race. He coaches cross-country at a school near Manassas, so he knows a little about motivation... I was excited.

And off we went, and we hit the first mile at around 7:25, so I thought yikes, I should slow down... but then I thought, maybe I can keep up this pace? The second mile was just about that, and so was the third - and then I saw a hand coming at me and it was my friend John coming on the other side of the road giving me a high five, just the energy I needed. The fourth mile was a bit slower, around 7:40, then around mile 5 I started to get a bit tired - then Brian told me we were so close, that I should just focus on giving everything I had and try to pass one runner at a time... so I did - and just when I thought I had nothing left, I sprinted to the finish line.

It felt soooooo great to hit a PR on this conditions. A huge accomplishment.

After the race I saw my friends Chris and Brent - it's always so great to hang out and chat with other runners after a good race. They even had hot chocolate, so I was able to eat something!

It really was an awesome finish, only 11 days after starting to run again after my jaw surgery, and 3 weeks after my broken jaw accident. I think once the braces come off I'll be able to do great things!!!

Thank you all for your support and happy Sunday!

Holy moly! Nice job!

From Kelli on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 15:31:21

Great job on the PR!! That is a great race considering all you have been through with your two injuries and how it hampered your training somewhat! Imagine what you will do if we can just keep you out of a body cast!?!

Wow, great race and PR! Way to run strong after all the recent occurrences, shows how mentally and physically strong you are!

From barry on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 21:08:31

Great job on the race, especially after all you have been through! Keep up the great running.

Great job!! I missed the broken jaw thing. Sorry that stinks. But it looks like it didn't slow you down at all.

From walter on Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 01:22:53

Nicely done! I did your race strategy in St. George marathon. I concentrated on the next person in front of me until I couldnt catch anyone else! Good PR! See I guess you dont have to worry about your breathing!

YOU ARE AWESOME LUCIA!!!!! AMAZING!

From Lucia on Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 09:48:11

Thank you guys! I'm still in disbelief. The McMillan running calculator translates that speed/distance into a Boston-qualifying marathon for me, so I'm very happy. I can't imagine what's possible once the braces come off! Provided that I don't gain those 12 lbs. back, of course... which I won't, I WON'T!!! Have a great day!

Way to go Lucia, that is an awsome time!! Great PR... you are doing fantastic! With all that you have been through and you still pull out a great time! You should be so proud!

Congratulations, and good job staying focused during those critical last couple of miles on the way to a massive PR!

From Shauna on Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 18:10:28

AWESOME!! Congrats on the PR!!! I just got caught up with your blog, and I am so sorry to hear about your accident. It sounds like you are recovering well and makes the PR that much more impressive. You rock!

I hope you make it out here for PF Chang's, although I will probably only do the half.

LUCIA!!! Way to go!! You are SO stinkin' AMAZING!!! Holy COW! Did you get any strange looks running with your wires and sissors? ;) I guess with a 10K you don't need any hydration? What did you do?

You are a Argentine ROCK STAR!!! WAY TO GO!!!!

From Brent on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 19:26:09

Lucia, you have the right handle, Rocket, nice PR, 1,000 commando points for the PR and hanging on. You are a fast Chicka, I expect great races for you in the future.

Stay Kool, faster and faster, B of BS Rools out

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 13:33:38

Congratulations on a PR. I think if you can go injury free for a couple of years you could run around 3:15-3:20 in the marathon. The speed is there.

From Lucia on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 13:36:47

Thank you Sasha! Unfortunatey that is a big "if"... I'll be happy with a 3:40 in the marathon...
