Calling all bloggers! Please keep this banged-up rocket in your prayers. I had a bit of a fender bender riding my bike this afternoon, fell, broke my jaw in two places, got 6 stitches on a cut, and chipped a couple of teeth. I'm at home and doing alright, but need to follow up with a specialist to make sure I don't need surgery to fix the jaw. I appreciate your sending good thoughts my way! Happy running!

Oh my goodness. Were you hit by a car, or just a fall?

Take your time healing and I hope everything goes well.

From walter on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 01:01:52

Oh my goodness Lucia! NO! We are not having a good year this year! If it makes you feel better, I broke my toe, lifted a jack hammer with my back and tweeked it today. I cant even sit! And I was bending down on thursday and when I came up something popped in my calf and I have a lump in the back of my left leg with a dark bruise around it! Im in pieces here! Dear Lucia, please take it easy and get yourself healed up and we'll do it again! Hope all is well.

From I.L. on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 01:39:45

Very sorry to hear the news. Best of luck in your recovery!

Were you hit by a car? I've cycled a bit in the Salt Lake City area, and I'd say many of the long time cyclists I know from SLC have been hit by a car at least once in their cycling "careers." I don't even hardly cycle in the city anymore because of that.

Again, all my best to you! Hopefully you will be all right.

From montelepsy on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 11:29:22

Great, now no one's going to care about my sprained ankle any longer.

Joking aside, I wish you a speedy recovery without any complications.

From Aaron-PSU on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 11:51:02

Wow Lucia, sorry you had an accident but I'm glad that you're still around! You are totally have a tough year, aren't you? Let me know if there is anything I can do to help, ok? You don't have to eat your lunch through a straw, do you? Get better soon!

From barry on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 12:36:27

I am so sorry. You will be in my prayers!! Did someone run a stop light or stop sign? How long are you going to be off work? I feel so bad for you..

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 12:44:59

Sorry to hear about that. At least you are alive and are able to type, and think enough to blog, that's a positive. Could have been much worse.

From Metcalf Running on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 16:50:49

Lucia, I'm so sorry to hear about your fall/accident, you will be in my prayers for a speedy recovery. You are one tough girl though and I know that you will come through this and be even stronger. Take care, Lori

From Lucia on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 18:41:56

For crying out loud Walter, how do you manage to beat me every time? You not only run faster but your injuries are always worse than mine! I shall beat you some day! Hopefully it'll be on the running :)

Thank you guys for your good thoughts! I'm having surgery on my jaw tomorrow afternoon, then will have to keep my mouth shut for several days... which will make a lot of people happy. Yup, Aaron, straws will be my friends!

And yes, Sasha, it could've been A LOT worse and I am very thankful for all the things that did not happen. The physical pain is not really what hurts the most in these situations, but not having my family around to support me is the hardest part. Thankfully I'm surrounded by great friends. And hey, I don't need any makeup to be Frankenstein in Halloween!

Thank you all for your prayers and good thoughts!

From Lucia on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 18:48:40

I wasn't hit by a car, I just got distracted looking at the beautiful scenery coming into DC from Arlington - there are bars on the bridge, and I leaned too far to the right, my handlebar got caught in one of the bars, and I went down. Hit the ground with my chin, but the whole bone shifted and broke up by my ear.

Walter and Montelepsy, I wish you both a speedy recovery as well!

From walter on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 19:05:52

Oh no Luce! You cant talk at all? Please send photos! lol Im not laughing at you just with you. You shouldnt worry about me im fine compared to you. I actually have been on a bike and was looking back and ran into a parked car and landed on the hood. It was utterly embarrassing! The man came out of his house and was worried about me more than his car thank goodness!

Hey, you know that goal you had to lose weight?

Well, maybe its an omen? lol Good luck and if you cant talk then type! If you cant be an athlete, be an athletic supporter! (my favorite saying) Cheers

Wall-e, that's the first thing I thought about when they told me no solid foods - weight loss! In Spanish we say "No hay mal que por bien no venga" - I don't know how to translate it... in all bad there's something good. Absolutely! Just in time for bikini season... in the Caribbean?

From walter on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 19:20:43

I hear you there Lucia, I know something good is about to come of all my horrid luck! Yours also! I know you are strong and will get through this quick. My sister went through that and it went by quick. Keep yourself busy like you always do and youll blink through it!

From Aaron-PSU on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 20:15:54

Hey Lucia, If you need anything at all, let me know. I can go buy you some straws. :) Seriously, if you need anything, email me and I'll be glad to help. I know you won't be able to call.

I was hoping that you'd be out there cheering us on at the MCM on Sunday. :(

From Lucia on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 20:19:28

Aaron, you think this will stop me from cheering? What are whistles and maraccas for? Ohhhh I'll be there!!! I'll let you know my spot so you can look for me. Is there a spot where you want me to give you anything? Let me know - I'll be happy to hand you your favorite snack on the way.

From jill on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 20:57:22

Lucia- please let me know where you will be- what hospital, and if you want someone to sit with you for a while. Also,if you need a ride home from the hospital, or want to stay at my house for a night - please let me know what I can do...Sending you good vibes my dear! So sorry!

From walter on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 21:04:01

You see how the blog brings us closer together!? We are all good at heart here. Thats nice of you and Aaron to help out. Im not trying to hint at any one here on my part. lol Good luck and best wishes Lucia.

From Aaron-PSU on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 21:09:22

Lucia, I need nothing special during the race, although thanks for offering! I have my cowbell ringer thingy from last year if you want to use that. I can always drop something off for you at your place on Friday too since I'll be picking my packet/schwag down at the expo.

From Lucia on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 21:39:08

Thank you Jillzo and Aaron, I'll be alright, your good energy is all I need.

Jill, you need anything for MCM? Let me know!

Aaron! You'll need more cowbell!!! Let me know what time you'll be in my hood.

From marion on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 23:06:57

NO NO NO!!! I go out of town and you let the road beat the crud out of you!!! I am SOOOOOOOO so sorry! I would come take care of you if I could. It is SO hard not having family around at times like this. You just want your mom to make you soup and do your laundry and dust!

Take care and good luck in surgery! I am praying for you. I am so sad you are hurt!!! CRAP!!!

From walter on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 23:21:50

Hey Lucia, does this mean I dont have a babysitter this weekend? lol I guess Ill keep the kids with me then. Consider yourself lucky there.

From jill on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 14:49:22

Give us an update when you can!!! Thinking of you!!!! I need your speed, that is all! Last night I had a dream that 2 hours into the marathon I took a coffee break at Starbucks! I know,I think I really do get distracted when running- even in my dreams! I will be okay! And, you will be okay too.

From walter on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 18:13:02

Jill dont worry, I have those dreams also. I should ask a shrink what that means. lol

From Lybi on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 18:36:25

Oh NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Lucia, I am so sorry to hear about your crash. Please keep us updated. I am worried about you! My sister in law broke her jaw and had to have her teeth wired together for 6 weeks. The human jawbone is one of the strongest bones in the body, I've heard. You must've really hit it hard. Time for some Rocket repair! I'm sending all the positive thoughts I can your direction...umph...let me know if they don't arrive.

From jtshad on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 18:39:40

Lucia, sorry to hear about your accident, I wish you a speedy recovery and will keep you in my prayers!

From Lucia on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 23:14:00

Thank you for your messages everyone! Surgery went well this afternoon, and I'm already home. Mouth is wired shut for about 3 weeks... maybe 2, or maybe more... I'm pushing for 2 of course. It sort-of feels like having braces. Not much pain at all, drugs are helping. I am so going to lose weight! I have such wonderful friends - my friend Marcella is staying with me tonight to make sure I make it alright, and my friend Bryon brought me a bunch of smoothies, soups, etc., delivery from a bunch of other friends. I'm definitely a lucky girl! I'll post some pics later on.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRAYERS AND THOUGHTS! Run smart and ride safe!

From marion on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 23:22:48

You are such a "bright side" looker :D You will lose those pounds you wanted to lose :) I am so glad you have good friends to love and take care of you! I would make you yummy soup if I were there! Take those drugs- you don't get any points for pain! I am SO glad the surgery went well!! Hang in there!!! Morbid, I know, but I can't wait to see the pic's ;)
