Attempted to run to work - wasn't happening. Right shin hurt a lot, and left shin started hurting again. So I ran to the metro stop, and metroed to work.

This is my official withdrawal from any attempt to run Boston in 2009. 2010 sounds better anyway. And the blogger girls will need a cheerleader!

What's the plan? Run shorter distances for now, cross-train lots, bike lots, do strength training, get a stride evaluation to figure out if I'm doing anything wrong and try to correct it. Run a Fall marathon in 2009 to qualify for Boston 2010.

Patience!

----------

I just scheduled a complete running assessment at a local PT clinic for next Tuesday - I'm hoping they will be able to help me, and the $100 charge seems reasonable...  Yaaaay!

-----------

The White House Christmas Tree lighting ceremony was happening, so they let us go early to avoid traffic - I was able to hit the gym for 45 minutes before going out on a hot date :) Did the bike for 15 minutes, elliptical for 15 minutes, and weights/abs for 15 minutes.

Hang in there. Patience is right. You will be stronger when you do come back with all that great crosstraining. Keep it up.

From Matt on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 12:25:13

Keep it up Lucia, Something tells me with that picture last month that the pounds must be coming off as well. Is there anyway you could hit a treadmill for awhile to help the shin splints?

From Lucia on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 13:29:42

I hope you're right, Mark!

Matt, yes I belong to a gym now so I could run on a treadmill... I didn't think that would help, but maybe it's worth giving it a try, thanks!

From Kelli on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 15:12:43

You are strong and beautiful, you will be fine! Good luck.

From barry on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 15:15:27

Did I send you the pre and post work out to help with shins?

From Lucia on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 15:21:22

Hi Barry! Yes, you sent me the workouts - I've been doing some of them but should be more diligent with them... ughhh...

From Metcalf Running on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 15:42:33

Hey Barry, my shins have been bugging lately... what are the workouts to help shin?

Lucia,

Be patient with yourself I'm sure you just need a bit more time and slowly work into running more. I think having the assesment is a good idea, it will be interesting to see what you find out.

Lucia,

What about hitting an elliptical? I did that for awhile when I was injured and couldn't take the pounding. And I agree, be patient with yourself.

From walter on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 09:51:38

Very wise running Lucia. I know getting back into running, you have to accustom your body to the pounding you create. I think easing back slowly is a great idea. Do cross training and you'll get there! Cheers

WOOT WOOT!!! Hot date got to love that. And got in a great workout. But you missed the tree lighting??

From Lucia on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 13:14:16

Lori, you are totally right.

Jim, the elliptical works well. I just like being outside, and the oh-so-convenient run commute, I know you understand that!

Wall-e, we both need to be patient, right?

Mark, it's nice to finally see other single people here! Too much couples talk :)

How's your jaw feeling?

From Lucia on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 14:02:53

The jaw feels fine - just a bit sore in the morning and when I eat. My jaw still goes to my right when I open my mouth wide, so I'm still a circus freak (Jim Carey style), but it gives me something fun to talk about during parties :)
