Personal:

I was a single mom.  Two times over.  We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions.  Then, I met a man I didn't deserve.  And he loves me so much.  And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer.  Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now.  But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway.  This is my failure blog now.  Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded.

An okay time for an okay performance.  Wasn't feeling it today.  I just never found that desire to really push into the super pain zone.  I tried to keep a steady pace--felt okay until mile 10 and then my legs just seemed to lose strength and it was hard to keep rocking steady.  I am a bit disappointed in my time, but think this is an honest assessment of my fitness so now I know where I am fitness-wise, and not just where I WISH I was. It will come with time.  The course was basically flat, a few ups and downs getting down by the river and then back up on the road here and there, but  mostly flat.  Hydrated well the last few days, got up early enough to eat toast and a banana, and never got anything during the aid stations at the race--a habit I'd better break for the marathon in 4 weeks.  :Left glute and right foot were okay during the race, but are killing me now!  No crazy time goals for the marathon, but hope I don't fall apart and am able to BQ.

Warmed up 1.25 easy with a few strides.

1--6:58--trying to take it easy, a whole mass of jackrabbits takes off in front of me

2--7:10--still taking it easy

3--7:06--trying to speed up a bit but it really isn't happening, pass a few of the jackrabbits

4--7:08--this speed is just the way it is I guess

5--7:12--See my husband and daughter!  I wave!

6.--7:09--just cruising along

7--7:21--Don't know what happened here.  I see a few gals in sight

8--7:07--heading back up where the course goes over itself, and are passing a bunch of runners coming the other direction

9--7:12--someone tells me I am 9th woman

10--7:13--pass one of the girls, she looks awfully tired. this should put me in 8th

11--7:20--oh dear.  getting tired.  left leg feels weird.  no pain or anything but it just doesn't have much power, getting all the stride power from my right leg now.  this is probably a manifestation of whatever has been going on with my left hip/butt.  A 40ish lady comes blowing by me and man she is cooking.  She just keeps going full speed ahead.  Man she looks strong.  Is that you Julie?:)  She quickly opens up a huge gap and is gone.  I am closing in on another girl right now

12--7:28--still trying to catch that girl.  am using shorter strides trying to work with this weird dead left leg

13--7:24--I pass her. somehow.  Try to surge into some speed but it's not happening.  It's just not happening

Don't know about the last little bit.  I stopped my watch late, after I had walked out of the finish chute.  It shows 13.21 miles.  This is a certified course so I didn't get my tangents quite right.

Am ashamed to admit I probably could have pushed harder as my breathing never got really hard during the race.  I need to get back to the strength drills on my legs, I should have never let myself quit doing those.  Well, I'm going to go get in the shower now and do some homework while Vanessa naps.

Great job on winning your age group, if the marathon is in 4 weeks then it wasn't a bad thing that you didn't run the half flat out, so you'll be able to recover quicker for the marathon.

April, second half and at 1:35? It took me a while to get there so don't worry you will get your goals as you learn how your body performs and the requirements of training to make it work for you. You ran well and never bonked. Totally relate to the hip thing. It goes numbish after the pain is gone. I am guessing it is a sciatica/piriformis problem as the sciatic nerve is irritated so much it goes into spasm to the adjacent muscles and therefore the muscles get tight and feel weird. It can even present itself as a painful foot only. I have had this left leg thing on and off for years (lots of falls, many miles of running) and I would start many a race wishing my left leg felt like my right. In fact it is completely bugging me right now but since I haven't died from it I keep on goin'. I do the stretches Marion linked me too. They seem to help. Bad posture is another reason. A chiropracter would probably help tons. They do massage and reverse tables to stetch you, and the adjustment. I am going on and I am supposed to just say "GREAT RUN GIRLFRIEND" because it was. 1st in age, yay!!! How old were your competitors? 40ish:D Maybe I was there? In spirit of course.

You ran so evenly--even in your ending where you were dead you didn't drop that much time per mile!

You ran a good race--don't be so hard on yourself. You said earlier this week that you weren't sure how this race was going to go, but you still took 3 minutes off last month's 1/2.

You'll be great for your marathon!

Great job April. I think you ran a good race, got a good time and even 1st in age division. You should be proud. Think of where you were a year ago, think of all the hard work you have put in. Its is paying interest now....good work !

Thanks so much everyone. I have been so wildly busy being a mother, a wife, a full-time student, and a full-time employee. I really feel that next year when I can stop being a student and hopefully be a part-time worker I can have some more time and rest to really run better. I will take this for now. Eric, you are right, this is so much better than a year ago. I'm not smoking, I'm 20 pounds lighter, my kids have a healthier role model, and I am already running in ways that I never even thought were possible. The sky's the limit and I am healthier not only physically but mentally and spiritually as well.

Wow! Awesome race! Congrats on the AG award, fast runner!

From Burt on Sun, Sep 20, 2009 at 23:20:33 from 98.167.151.26

Great job April! You rock. Well said on the healthy role model.

April is no where near 40! She's like 27.

From seeaprilrun on Sun, Sep 20, 2009 at 23:34:31 from 68.103.250.39

Ha pretty close Burt I am 30. And 30 is the new 20, so they say.

From Burt on Sun, Sep 20, 2009 at 23:47:25 from 98.167.151.26

LOL! I actually meant to say Julie. But yep, you're 20.

From Kelli on Mon, Sep 21, 2009 at 13:40:36 from 71.219.96.151

Nicely done! I am sorry that you are a little disappointed, but you did great! I love your assessment of the race and what you will take from it, that is what it is all about! I can not believe with that time you never got breathing hard. That is about my PR, and I thought I was going to die the entire time!!!!

You are AMAZING!!!!!!

From JulieC on Mon, Sep 21, 2009 at 14:46:43 from 71.32.226.140

Burt- how did you know that was my favorite number (27)? I was listening to Chariots of Fire on my run today, the original version, that pretty much dates me as I was thinking of Joan Benoit crossing the finish line making olympic history finishing in 2:21 with a gold medal in 1984. April, I did not know that about 30 being the new 20, so I guess I am 30. I will take that. How's recovery?

From seeaprilrun on Mon, Sep 21, 2009 at 15:56:03 from 205.172.12.229

Not bad on recovery. Quads are sore but nothing near the scale of the soreness I experienced with the other half marathon. Things should be in order so I can get back on it running tomorrow. I have one more 20 miler planned for Saturday and then that's it for the super-long runs before the marathon.

From Kelli on Mon, Sep 21, 2009 at 17:10:49 from 71.219.96.151

Best of luck on that 20 miler!!!!!

From Smooth on Mon, Sep 21, 2009 at 17:22:06 from 97.117.81.161

CONGRATS on winning your AG. Your splits were steady and impressive. I think you did GREAT in hindsight, saving the push for the upcoming marathon. Looks like you're recovering well. Good luck on the 20miler and BEST WISHES for the marathon.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 16:08:55 from 192.168.1.1

Take that one in stride and try again in a couple of months once you are healed up. An injury will alter biomechanics, so the economy goes down and it is much harder to maintain pace as the race progresses. I was reminded of that in my own race. But still 1:35 is not bad.
