Personal:

I was a single mom.  Two times over.  We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions.  Then, I met a man I didn't deserve.  And he loves me so much.  And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer.  Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now.  But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway.  This is my failure blog now.  Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded.

Disappointed.  A little.  Not what I wanted, but close.  I am making progress, it is just agonizingly slow progress, but progress nonetheless.  Fitness check reveals that aerobically I am doing pretty good but leg strength/leg fatigue is an issue.  I think as my body gets more used to 60+ weeks and I get regular sub-7 paced tempos in this will improve.  Although I am not going to do formal speedwork, I think occasional 1/2 mile bursts of sub-6 pace each week along with a once-weekly sub-7 tempo or short race will also help drive my "cruising" speed from 7:00 to somewhere sub-7.

Ate a banana for breakfast, warmed up 1 mile slow and lined up.  It was cold but not to0 cold so I ditched my sweatshirt, hat, and gloves 2 minutes before the race started and ran in shorts and a singlet.

Splits are per garmin, I really need to learn to hit my lap button and go by mile markers but I am paranoid this will break my concentration.  Per garmin I ran 10.08 and I believe this since the course was out and back on a bike path so you couldn't properly run tangents without plowing into someone for miles 3-7.  The course is mostly flat with a handful of steep but very short rollers.  I ran the first 5 miles more or less with two other gals, Tara and Margie.  We talked a bit and they were super nice.  I have met Margie before.  At the turn around Tara took off and I tried to go with her but she dropped me.  I dropped Margie in here too, but she finished only a minute behind me, and I finished a minute behind Tara.  I did beat Lacy today by about a minute and I have never beat Lacy.  She finished her 1/2 marathon 3 minutes faster than me and the marathon 14 minutes faster.  I am officially a chase-pack runner locally.  Maybe by next year I can work my way into the lead pack. :)

Splits 6:50, 6:57, 6:58, 6:56, 6:59, 7:04(I could just kick myself),7:05(grrrrr), 7:06(noooo), 7:08(hang my head), 6:56(finish decent please) , .08 in 22 seconds if the garmin is to be believed.  Take it or leave it I did kick pretty hard in the end and get a little puke-zoney so that is the only reason I am including this last little snippet in my report.

Cooled down 1/2 mile, took my mom out to lunch for her birthday, went home, and then ran a 6.85 mile recovery run at 9:01 pace to break in my new Nikes and get 60 for the week.  I got the shoes on sale and they actually feel really good on my feet.

Holy cow! Great 10 miler! I am sorry it was not what you wanted, but it still ROCKS!! Nice 6 mile recovery run! I am SO amazed at your running and your progress over the past year. next year you will be lead wolf! ;D

Hey April nice race!! With that .08 in there doesn't that put you under sevens? You are so tough!!! And then another 6+ miles later? Well, Melanie did joke with me that I would probably be out there running 4.5 more tonight....now you got me thinking for a moment that I should be tougher. A 9:00 pace sounds lovely. Maybe?.....not. Superbly done, I think.

Yeah for shoes on sale!!! Nice job on the mileage, too!!

Sorry you were disappointed with the race, BUT it sounds like you have a good plan and your head is on straight. The improvement you want will come! You are a very driven woman, I so admire you!

Well done on winning your age group, you were so close to 70 mins!

I'm sure the results you would like will come eventually, plus it doesn't sound like you tapered for this race? If you were a little more rested maybe the sub 70 may have come? Maybe next time?

From seeaprilrun on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 09:40:40 from 68.103.250.39

Nah no taper other than the day before I only ran 4 miles. I probably won't taper for any races for a while except maybe the half in January. I do think tapering would have helped my time, but this is not a target race and I am on a mission to get 60 miles a week in for a while!

Great job April. Almost got those sub 7's. Close enough.

April, this is awesome. If I add your splits, they are sub 7, no? (in total).

Still, I am sure that with time you WILL be the leader of the pack! Hang in there...

Great job April! What an awesome run! You will be in the lead pack soon! You have so much drive!

This is actually pretty solid. Close enough to your 10 K PR pace. Also, you are doing this not too long after the marathon, so leg strength issues are to be expected.

From now on be patient. Listen to your body. Do not force either mileage or intensity. At times you may feel like a total bum, but as long as you you put it at least 40 miles a week the time is on your side. The body is still healing from previous lifestyle, so the aerobic fitness will continue to accumulate even at that low of a mileage.
