Personal:

I was a single mom.  Two times over.  We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions.  Then, I met a man I didn't deserve.  And he loves me so much.  And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer.  Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now.  But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway.  This is my failure blog now.  Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded.

Finally!  Sub-20! (barely).  I am excited about my time, but know I could've done better if I hadn't slacked in the second mile.  Anyways, on to the report.  Woke up at 5:00am, had half a cup off coffee, got dressed, got in the care and made the one hour drive to Cheney.  Drank water and ate a banana on the way.  Got there, registered, walked around a bit, and then ran the course in reverse very slow(10:00 pace.)  It was super hot and humid and I was drenched after the warm-up but I have gotten used to being icky hot and it really wasn't bothering me much.  My husband and three youngest kids came to cheer me on!

Mile 1: 6:17--Feel pretty good, definitely working but not in trouble.  Have settled into second place and 1st place is already way ahead--this girl is out of my league and I will not be able to catch her.

Mile 2: 6:45--I hear the guy call the split(13:02) and realize I have gotten way too comfortable in the second mile.  Shoot!  I was napping!  Why do I always do this in the second mile?  I am truthfully more comfortable than I should be at this point in a 5k.  I kick it up a gear--I can still get sub-20 but it's going to be work.

Mile 3: 6:29--As I turn down the last straightway I am picking up more and more steam.  As I cross the 3 mile mark I am already unfolding into my kick. They actually have someone calling the 3 mile split. 19:31.  I have 29 seconds to get to the finish line.  I kick with more urgency than I think I ever have before.  Up on my toes, eyeballs bulging, crazy face, terminator arms, making my body go as fast as it possibly can.

.1/28 seconds, 4:40 pace.

My watch reads 19:58 but official time is 19:59 so I'll go with that.

In retrospect, I need to learn to push harder in the middle of a 5k.  This is my weak spot where I lose time, and it seems to be a pattern.  I am, however, happy with my kick.  I would like to learn to kick longer at the same speed.

I cooled down, drank some water and gatorade, jogged a mile, then strapped Vanessa into the stroller for the one mile.  Part of the mile was on gravel and dirt with potholes and poor Vanessa was bouncing around like crazy!  She started talking about the barking doggy so obviously it didn't bother her.  I careened around corners with the stroller on two wheels and ran on the outside so I wouldn't plow people over.  We finished in 6:48, good enough for second place!  I was just happy to break 7:00 with a stroller(that was my goal).

Overall a good workout today.  I can already feel it in my legs--I will be sore.  Next long-term goal is to break 19:00 in the 5k.  I know this will take a long time and will not happen right away, but I think it is possible.

SUB 20 !!!! AWESOME!!!!!

See, it was all a question of time for that sub 20 to come in. Great job! And yes, need to find the drive for the 2nd mile, hope you find it and sub 19 will be around the corner.

I was looking at the race reports and I saw your sub 20...by one second!!! I just started laughing and said, "She didn't even try very hard. She had that sub 20 in the bag and that's all she cared about, so she strolled in." Then I read your report, and I guess you did push it pretty hard. LOL. That is so awesome. Way to go!

Thanks everybody! You are right Eric--I need to get a handle on my mid-race napping! No money for this one Julie but at least it was pretty inexpensive--only 15 bucks for both races!

Nice work girl! Congratulations, you are one speedy chick! I hope your kids give you a nice massage!

Congratulations on the sub-20:00. I assume the course was certified and they just messed up on the third mile marker. It is very very unusual to kick at 4:40 pace for somebody who is reasonably well trained and races at 6:20. Or maybe you do have very high top end speed. I'd be curious to find out what you can run 200 meters in. Maybe you can run under 30. If so, that would be great news, this would mean in three years of pushing the right buttons you could really rock in long distances, we are talking a Trials Qualifier in the marathon or at least close.

From seeaprilrun on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 19:55:43 from 68.102.144.140

Hmmm I don't know if the course is certified or not. It is not on the USATF website. Per my Garmin it is 3.11; per mapmyrun course tool is 3.2 so I don't believe it is short. Dunno about the mile markers. My Garmin says I crossed mile 3 at 19:32. I will have to do some experimenting with some 200 meter sprints on a track next week, out of curiousity. Do I get a running start or should I do them from a stop? If the 3 miles marker should be further back that would make sense though, then my 2nd mile wouldn't be so awfully slow but the Garmin shows similar splits--6:16/6:47/6:30.Olympic Trials qualifier good grief what a crazy thought I haven't even ran a marathon.

I don't know how this slipped by me! You rock, and I'm so happy for you!

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 11:17:15 from 68.102.144.140

The results are in! I ran 200 meters in, er, 34 seconds. So much for top-end speed...There's a reason I was never a sprinter...

From Kelli on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 11:36:03 from 71.219.89.21

April, first, I would give it a few tries on different days. We all know how finicky the woman's body is. And secondly, we all also know that strange things happen in races and we often outperform what we think we are capable and, I think, even sometimes what we would be capable of on a track. Adrenaline kicks in, you saw the finish line, you wanted that sub-20, and you did what you had to do. That is great news---your body can really rock at a race!

YOU ARE AMAZINGLY TALENTED!

From marion on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 11:40:45 from 71.213.106.139

I'm with Kelli- her assessment is very likely correct! AND YOU ARE AN AMAZING RUNNER!!! :D

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 13:40:02 from 64.81.245.109

April:

I read your entry. Your time was on the first try, correct? If so, you probably do have around 30-31 200 in you. You can never hit your top end speed without an extensive warm-up, especially if you are a distance runner. E.g if I do 10x100 pushing as hard as I can in all it will go like this - 16.0, 15.8, 15.4, 15.2, 14.7, and the rest around 15.0 because of fatigue. With some sprint training I can dip a bit under 14 if I am racing somebody my level. I set my 200 PR of 27.5 on the 8th repetition racing a training partner, the other 7 were in 33. Then my coach had me try an all out 200 alone after a warm-up and few strides a few days later. All I could do was 27.8, and I felt very tense.

In any case, if you do not make an OTQ it will not be because you lack top end speed. I think you need another year of aerobic base, and then we need to test your mile speed and bring it to 5:20 if it is not already there by then. Sub-19:00 5 K is no big deal, will happen with time if you are able to run base mileage consistently without injuries.

From JulieC on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 15:52:39 from 65.103.226.78

Good for you, from a stand still that is great. Did you warm up? I certainly believe you could have had that kick left in you, your description above matches your time "eyeballs bulging, terminator arms etc", I love it : D
