Warmed up with 3 miles then attempted 4 miles at tempo pace.  First 2 miles were painfully slow.  The effort was way too hard for how slow the pace was (6:42/mile).  The next 2 miles were a little under 6:30 and felt a lot better.  This pace is definitely hard on the hamstring.  Cooled down with a few miles at an easy pace.  

Total Time: 1:15:54 (7:35/mile)

Sounds like you had a good Utah Valley marathon. Hope your hamstring injury heals. Yes that was my boy that ran the 1/2 marathon and had article in the tribune including waiting for his Dad. Does your 11 year old son run? There are a couple running clubs in Salt Lake area that my son participates in

I've had the most trouble with my hamstring when I've done back-to-back races too close together. I'm feeling it a bit lately after doing Striders and a 10K one week apart. I can imagine where you ran Striders then UVM it might be a couple weeks or so before the fast miles feel very good. Good luck finding the right balance of training, it's always tough for me to do the smart thing.

Michael - My son is not really interested in running. I have never really pushed him towards it.

Tom - I was hoping to get in 2 solid weeks of training before tapering for Ogden. It is looking like I will just try to maintain decent mileage without a lot of intensity.

Cal - I'm not running the 30K race. I considered it because I am running 20 on that day anyway but know that racing it would do more harm than good.

Andy you reminded me how I first got the nasty hamstring butt-itis in the first place. Three years ago I was going to run SLC marathon as a "training run" before the marathon I cared about which was Ogden. But of course I ended up racing SLC and then in my stubborness a week and a half after I insisted on going through with a planned 11-mile tempo run at marathon pace even though I was still feeling the effects of SLC. I got 8 miles into the run and my hamstrings were just screaming at me ad I had to pretty much walk home. After this I held off any more hard runs before Ogden but the damage was done and I had an absolutely horrible race and my hamstrings have never been quite the same since.

But I should also mention I was only training on 30-40 miles a week so I think with a base of 50-70 it would have made things a lot better.

At any rate I really hope things go well for you. I would just say listen very closely to your body and if it tells you not to continue with a planned harder workout then back off and just run slow. I don't think you will lose much if any fitness by keeping the running easy before Ogden.
