Decided to preview the Handcart Days half marathon course that starts at the rec center.  There really is no need for me to preview it as most of my runs are on parts of the course.  I didn't run the whole course as I had to make an emergency detour.  I've never been so happy to see a Walmart.  The course itself is going to be a very honest course.  Very slightly down for a few miles, flat for a few miles then slightly up for a few miles.  My legs did not feel good at all.  Very sore all over.  Left achilles and right ITB were especially achey.

I can't imagine NOT having sore legs after a 5K PR followed up by a 20+ miler at a decent clip.

I am happy you made it to Walmart. :) I have not signed up for this race yet, I think the course looks hard and I need to run 17 miles that day...what to do...

The course is not hard at all - just not all downhill like all of the other Utah halfs. I'm sure you have run most of the course already. The only hard part is the uphill on Pages Lane from 1100 West to Main Street then the gradual incline from Pages to 400 North. There is also a really steep but short over pass at mile 8. You may as well do an easy 2 mile warm up then run the race. That is as good as 17 miles.

You are the chief when it comes to listening to your body and knowing how to take care of it! No worries when it comes to you.

All Hail to the Chief!

What? A MLR so soon after a 5K PR followed by a 20 miler? WOW! You're amazing! That Handcart Days Half sound interesting!

Smooth - There is 1 mile that is industrial and very ugly but other than that it is not a bad route. It's mostly a rural area and 2.5 miles are run on the Legacy Parkway trail. I'm not sure how good the course support will be. They may only have 1 or 2 aid stations. Also, I measured the course 0.1 long but may not have started and finished in the right place.

Is there a web-site?

From Andy on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 16:48:01 from 159.212.71.25

Kind of: http://www.southdavisrecreation.com/content/?page=99

It is mostly just a registration page. The rec center really does not do as good of a job as they could providing information about their events.

The course map shows quite a few turns. Have you race this before? Are you running it this year?

From Smooth on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 16:59:24 from 174.23.191.197

Duh, of course you're running it this year. How big is the field, competition?

From Andy on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 17:17:49 from 159.212.71.25

This is the first year they are doing the half marathon and I imagine it will not have very many participants and not a lot of competition (I am really good at cherry picking races). The turns are not as bad as they seem. They are spread out enough that they don't break your rhythm. It is actually nice because you do not have long stretches that you can see for miles. The biggest issue I see is that you have to cross a set of train tracks twice so you run the risk of having to wait for a train. They deduct the wait time from your overall time which I think takes away from the credibility of the race.
