A nice general aerobic run.  Kept a steady pace throughout the run (7:35/mile).  At the beginning of the run a dog started to run along side of me.  He ran with me for 2 miles and I was worried that he was too far from home and would not be able to find it's way back.  He stopped following my and I continued my run.  As I started going down my street, he came up along side me again.  Glad he found his way home (wherever that might be).

Hey Andy. Nice running lately. You seem to be in great shape lately. Congrats on the 5k the other day. If you get a minute over the next week or so, I would love your opinion on the best way to run DesNews marathon in order to finish at about 3 hrs or just under (i.e. be aggressive for the first 16-17 and then hold on once you hit the valley or just hold way back and try saving something for when you hit the valley). I ran it 2 yrs ago so I know the pounding that's coming, but I also know you have a lot of race experience and that you've run this course as well. Would love your thoughts. Sorry, for the long post.

That sounds like a nice run, and you didn't mention any aches or pains so that's a good thing right?

I hope the dog found it's way home.

NICE GA run. That dog must like your company.

Wow I think this is the first time ever I have posted a run before you! How was your run today?

Jeff - I have only run Des News once so you probably have a better feel for it than I do. My best races have always come from starting a little conservatively. I'm not sure that is the best way to run Des News. The first 4 miles are a screaming downhill so I would just let gravity do it's thing while not letting the pace get too much faster than 6:40-6:45. I would run relaxed going up little mountain. When I ran it I think the mistake I made was powering up the hill and burning too much energy. Take advantage of the downhill (but not too much - maybe 6:45/mile) because once you hit the valley it is going to be hot and your pace will slow more than you think. It is definitely a postive split course. That probably doesn't help much. Is that kind of what you were thinking?

Thanks Andy. Yea, this is right along the line of what I was thinking. I think if I could hit the half at around 1:26-1:28 I would put myself in position to come in around 3 hrs and maybe just under. But with the severe downhill it has crossed my mind to try and hit the half under 1:25 (which I think is very doable) and then really try and hold on. I think this would be a stupid move though. Thanks for the input though. It helps to hear other's thoughts.

I think a 1:25 first half might be a bit too aggressive depending on what kind of shape you are in.
