Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - Morning workout, another "see how I feel" one. I drove to the least hilly area that is close by to home. By the time I got going, it was already pretty hot and humid - reminded me a lot of Boston. Warm-up of 2 miles then -

4 mile tempo at 6:22 pace, 0.5 jog
2 x 0.5 mile at 5:54 pace, equal recovery
2 x 0.25 mile at 5:45 pace, equal recovery
2 x .125 mile at 5:45 pace, equal recovery

Not a stellar workout, but 5.75 miles of faster running. My effort level was much higher than the paces I was running. Will try to get up earlier on Thursday and get in a faster workout. I need to work on my turnover if I want to try to break 17 minutes in ten days at PTF!

PM - 3.1 miles once the sun went down. Really pleasant and relaxing run.

Humidity is tougher than altitude, in my opinion. Good workout under the circumstances.

Wow, that is ALOT of "quality miles" God job!

Humidity is a killer! It is the effort that counts and you definitely still hit some awesome paces despite the warm temps. Enjoy the time with your family Andrea.

That sub-17 is soooo going to happen. I will bet a crap-ton of Oregon micro-brews on it :)

The bigger challenge (than sub 17) is going to be figuring out the recycling in Portland. Rob says its VERY complicated. They have a separate bin for every imaginable category.

Haha...you ever had summer beer before? I actually found a drink that I like!

From Lulu Walls on Tue, May 29, 2012 at 15:03:08 from 155.100.217.229

Yeah I bet you have to bring your own reusable paper cup and it must have a bird on it...

Oooh a drink that you like?!? I can't wait for wine tasting night. I take these types of challenges very seriously.

twilight shakeouts are so awesome!

i'm looking forward to this "find a drink we like" night. what goes w/ diet dew? :-)

Nice workout Andrea. Sometimes those really tough efforts end up being spring boards to some new fitness gains.

Good luck in your race. I know you can break 17, just try to kick earlier than you normally would say 50 meters early and I think you'll crack it.

From Andrea on Tue, May 29, 2012 at 21:16:06 from 69.131.218.205

I think I'll be kicking for the entire race! :)

Your ready for a sub 17 5k for sure. Wow that is so flying fast!

From scottkeate on Wed, May 30, 2012 at 09:43:22 from 216.49.181.254

I love the laser focus you've got for the sub 17. I'm preaching to the choir on this, but while trusting the effort level isn't easy, these hard-effort workouts ARE getting the job done.

If you keep the clear intention and listen to your body, you're in for a great experience.

Great workout in the heat and humidity!

I'm totally laughing at Jake's comment about the recycling in Portland. It reminded me of the time I got yelled at by someone at a race in Boulder for accidentally throwing something into the wrong bin. I had never been to a race that had multiple recycling bins and a compost bin! They even had someone standing there to fish out incorrectly thrown out items and put them in the proper container.
