Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - Treadmill workout. Warmed up for 1.75 miles then ran 3 x 1.55 miles at 1% incline (2.5 km) at 6:26 pace w/ 3 min active recovery. The effort felt hard this morning - my legs felt fatigued but my breathing wasn't too bad. Glad to get another workout in - I'm worried about the BAA 5K in 3.5 weeks. Cooled down for a total of 7.6 miles.

I've been really struggling with my back for the past 3-4 days to the point where I can barely sit down for more than a couple minutes without pain. Maybe it's because I haven't had as much time to stretch and do yoga every day, I don't know. The pain seems to be stem from the SI joints and radiate up my back. It is the worst when I am sitting but can feel it all the time. When I start running, I get a burning sensation in the joints but running is not necessarily painful. I wonder if the back pain has been the result of SI problems this whole time (I haven't ever been treated for that). I've been taking a lot of ibuprofen and putting on Biofreeze to help. So frustrating..

Ohhhhh sorry about the back :( Traveling and getting out of routine is the worst thing for the joints I am certain.

What a great TM workout! You are so strong despite the pain you have. I hope that you feel better soon. :(

Nice workout again! You are going to surprise yourself in Boston. And if nothing else, you're getting back into the groove of workouts, and you're building the foundation that's going to allow you to kick butt the rest of the year!

Lulu - yes, traveling is the worst. When will they develop teleportation?!

Bec - Thanks! I hope it feels better too :)

Jake - I hope you're right!

Great job with the harder workout this morning Andrea!

So so sorry about the back pain that has got to be so frustrating and I wish there was a simple solution. It seems that you may be right about it being related to the SI joint.

seriously my back hurt tons just as you describe which led me to a women health dr. just before I found out I had iron deficiency....are you taking a good iron supplement????

From Andrea on Thu, Mar 22, 2012 at 11:49:04 from 72.37.171.52

Oh yeah, got my results back. Will post specifics more tomorrow but ferritin was 34 - low but not TOO bad. Vit D was pretty low but everything else was relatively normal.

I am taking a good iron supplement. Not the liquid iron though. It sounds gross!

I'm wondering if the treadmill is aggravating your back. Of course, it's your only option right now for running. I find that when I run on the treadmill, my hips get really tight, and I will even feel it mid-back.

Ferrous sulfate IS gross! I lived on it in college. Apparently it absorbs well.

Back pain is rough; I know Advil will sometimes take the edge off. My wife had SI issues that referred to her hamstrings at times. The pain can travel to different areas at times. She had a lot of success by rolling her back on the foam roller laying on it cross ways and in line with the roller. It could also be flaring up from poor bedding. I pray you find some relief!
