Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - Let Fritz beat me on the stairmaster this morning. 25 minutes of that + 5 minutes of the arm bike. I feel good - the skiing didn't affect me too badly, only a tight IT band this morning.

Went to PT and did EMG on the glute medius, TFL, glute max, and hamstring. The hamstring is overworking in comparison with the glute max. And here is the graph comparing the left and right side glute medius and TFL - no real shocker for why my right glute medius and TFL hurt so much...they are working WAY harder than they should be. We double-checked the location of the sensors and everything...This is the prime example of compensation patterns. I'm so screwed up!!

Nice race this morning. Next time we will have to do the arm bike or rowing machine. I much prefer the rowing machines at your gym because they have rubber handles and don't give me calluses.

From Jake K on Mon, Mar 11, 2013 at 16:57:53 from 155.100.226.191

Well it looks like you beat Fritz's 20% imbalance by quite a margin.

I know it sucks to see results like this, but it would be even worse if they were good - then you'd have no idea what was going on. The EMG completely backs up the theory you already developed.

That's just walking!! Imagine how terrible it would look running :(

The problem is that they still haven't found a root cause. They started talking labrum, hernia, anterior femoral glide syndrome, etc, etc. It's just a fun little game for them and a really terrible drawn out injury for me.

From Jake K on Mon, Mar 11, 2013 at 17:04:04 from 155.100.226.191

I thought it was running. Huh. Why didn't they do running as well? The muscle activation patterns might be different... or at least, I wonder if the discrepancy is quite as bad?

From Andrea on Mon, Mar 11, 2013 at 17:06:22 from 72.37.171.52

Well, it takes me 20 minutes to feel any glute medius/TFL pain when walking and typically only 10 minutes when running, so I imagine the muscle activation patterns are very similar. I can have them do running next time.

From Jake K on Mon, Mar 11, 2013 at 17:07:49 from 155.100.226.191

I guess I'm just thinking that if the imbalance is the same, and running adds in additional reaction forces, running probably isn't a good idea at all :-(

From Andrea on Mon, Mar 11, 2013 at 17:19:20 from 72.37.171.52

I'm so far away from being able to run...it's been 7 months now and I'm not even close :( I need to go outside, get my spirits up.

From Fritz on Mon, Mar 11, 2013 at 17:22:25 from 65.116.116.6

5x is no bueno. In my situation the side that isn't working as much (my left) is the one that kept getting injured. But now the right side that is the strong side has the knee issue. Go figure. I am getting this type of test done on Wednesday. The other one was using a foot plate while running.

From Redd on Mon, Mar 11, 2013 at 18:33:26 from 67.182.221.190

Well if you keep on the arm bike at least you'll be more jacked than Jake ;)

wo?man. I laughed at this.

But reading most of this post and the comments just gave me a headache.

Wanna race to unscrewed up-ed-ness? I am so sorry you are so messed up although I do enjoy Andrea sightings at PT :)

Maybe the root cause has already healed up and now your body just needs to relearn how to activate those muscles and you will be all healed up and amazing!

Holy moly that is crazy! I didn't know your muscles could overcompensate that much. I still believe that your full recovery is on the horizon.

It's awesome that you're getting all of this stuff figured out. Hoping for the best!

I was thinking it could be the length of your legs, but that wouldn't explain why this show up when it did. All the best.
