Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc. 

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - Did some core and strengthening exercises for 25 minutes or so. After 4 weeks of having pain on the ball of my foot (on the 2nd metatarsal), I have decided to take a week off from putting any pressure on it. I'm still debating on whether to get an x-ray and make sure it's not a stress fracture. So this pretty much means nothing except pool running and strength training (and probably gaining 5 lbs)...I think my goal will be to pool run a mile in less than Fritz's 70 minutes.

If you can beat Fritz's pool mile time, that would convert to about a 2:22-2:23 marathon. So you'll be right up there w/ Shalane and Desi.

Might as well take time off now while your not training for anything rather than risking your Spring races. I say go ahead and get the x-ray and rule out stress fracture. That way when you get back to training you can give it 100% without the worry.

You might have tried this already, but when I got metatarsalgia (on the middle toe for me) I stuck some padding a bit behind the base of the toe, on the ball of my foot, to create more of an arch to take the pressure off the toe. You can use a couple layers of moleskin or corn pads or something to do it. I was able to run on it like that, and quickly got used to having the padding there.

I would be down for Tuesday. This is like day 17 in a row at the gym for me so it would be nice to have some company. I am only now starting to go crazy!!!

andrea -- you are smart. i think it's a great decision and shows a lot of discipline and good sense. it's not easy taking time off but if it makes running better for you in the future then it's totally worth it.

as far as a doc goes -- i recommend dr. massimo testa. he is a sports medicine specialist and he knows and understands athletes (coached lance armstrong at one point -- i'll send his contact info/bio to you via email).

i have him to thank for getting me from crutches to running in just four weeks. he understood that i wanted as little time off as possible, and he's really big on active recovery. he gave me a detailed cross training plan while i had to stay off my leg, as well as a "return to running" program that was aggressive yet sensible. i went to him as a second opinion and he is the one that prescribed the air cast i could run in vs. prescribing crutches i could do nothing in. highly recommended [my favorite cliche].

good luck this week -- i think things will improve for you greatly with this rest period. as for the pool running --i'm terrified of drowning, but i would certainly keep you company on a raft if you are interested. i could bring a beach ball and a boombox.
