Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - 2 mile warm-up then 2 mile tempo in 6:18, 6:21. Scaled back workout for my baby steps training approach post-injury. The first mile felt great and the second mile felt hard. Obviously my (lack of) aerobic conditioning is the limiting factor for now. I do love running faster  though :)

I did a 2012 Review on the Wasatch blog...took me a while to post b/c Jake was taking over the blog all last week! Very tough year of injuries but I'm finally on the upswing.

Good start, and nice run. I liked your review, and especially your 2013 goals. Keep it simple. Sounds like you are thinking big picture which is hard to do sometimes.

Yay tempo. So awesome! Cheers to even more adventure in 2013!

Awesome tempo this morning Andrea. It is amazing to me how well your body is remembering the faster paces.

I like your 2013 goal to have more fun. :)

excellent mini tempo and nice recap -- a tough year for sure but you had some great races and got a lot of injuries out of the way. it's all healthy from here.

i love that BAA start line pic.

Andrea,

Your 5K and 1/2M times while injured are so fast it's crazy.

It looks like I've got metatarsalgia in my right foot. Did any specific treatment work best for you? If so, do share. Thanks a bunch.

From Andrea on Wed, Jan 09, 2013 at 12:21:07 from 72.37.171.52

Foot problems are so complicated and annoying. What finally worked for me was - deep massage in the feet (rubbing with finger in between the bones of the feet), loosening up the calves (there are several trigger points in the calf muscle that can cause pain in the feet), and a warmer climate (I went to Brazil :) but maybe just doing more miles indoors to keep everything loose).

From Andrea on Wed, Jan 09, 2013 at 12:23:28 from 72.37.171.52

I also spent a lot of time cross training and doing activities that didn't irritate the foot pain for a while. It's very similar to plantar fascitis in my opinion - struggle with it for a while, starts getting a little more manageable, and then one day it's just gone and doesn't come back.

Thanks for the advice. One more reason to visit Brazil. ~Matt

Great tempo today and excellent 2012 recap. The pictures are fantastic. Time for a healthy 2013! By the way, what is skinning?

From Jake K on Fri, Jan 11, 2013 at 11:11:43 from 155.100.226.191

Matt- I bet you've been waiting in suspense for a response to your "what is skinning" question and your surgery schedule is pushed back a week now! :-)

Skiining just means uphill travel on skis. You put these magic nylon "skins" on the bottom of your skis and w/ a free heel, you have enough traction to climb up mountains while keeping your skis on your feet. Its the "up" part of backcountry ski touring. Then you take them off for skiing back down.

Thanks for the answer Jake. You are right, I cancelled all my surgeries until I had an answer to this question. Now I can move forward :) Very cool stuff. Sounds like fun.
