Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - Showed up for JAJA run but only made it a quarter mile before I realized I was just causing more damage to my hamstring and turned around. It feels a lot worse than it has in the past after a twinge (and I've had quite a few). Usually I'm okay to run easy the next day with only a little discomfort, but that wasn't happening today. I'm sad because I wanted to catch up with the crew this morning....and discouraged because I know it's a terrible idea to race on Friday and try to hit sub-17. Bigger picture - the Half Champs are still my main goal so I have 9 days to heal up.

After the running disaster I headed to the gym and did a workout on the recumbent bike. 22 x 45s on/45s off in an attempt to mimic something like 200s on the track. It was a hard effort but not nearly as hard as running the same workout. 38 minutes total. Then yoga for 20 minutes.

PM - 40 minutes on the elliptical. It seemed to loosen up my hamstring a bit. Hoping for the best.

Sorry about the hammie! You are smart to play it safe!

9 days is plenty time to let everything calm down and absorb all the great training! GOOD LUCK!!! :) :) :)

Oh Andrea. I'm sorry :( But like you said you do have 9 days to heal up!!!

I'm so sorry about your hammy. So frustrating but your sooo right about the bigger picture. I had major hammy problems in high school and it even kept me out of the state championship meet at the time I was sooooo devastated but looking back it was the best. Heal up there will always be another race.

From Jake K on Wed, Jun 06, 2012 at 09:45:30 from 155.100.226.54

Smart, although frustrating, to call it when you did. You can't really change your fitness b/w now and next weekend. The only thing you can hopefully do is get the hamstring to the point where it will hold up for a whole race.

Kudos on having the motivation to get in a good x-training session.

I am so so sad to see this Andrea. Good job at listenning to your body and calling the run when you did. Also props for getting a workout in.

I definitely think you are making the right call about dropping out of the 5k this Saturday. I am thinking about you and wish you lived closer so I could take you out for icecream! Icecream always helps.

Good luck and get better.

Bummer. Spin class tomorrow morning if you are interested. ice, ice, ice, is the best advice I can offer. Heal soon!

From Andrea on Wed, Jun 06, 2012 at 14:49:20 from 72.37.171.52

Smooth and Lulu - Thanks! I really thought I was making progress in the past 3 weeks...it's frustrating but I've already iced/heated 5 times today so I'm hoping that I'll be good in 9 days.

Angie - I was really looking forward/terrified to see what I could do on the track! But I'll have to wait until next year.

Rachelle - Lots of ice cream would be nice! It is Waffle Cone Wednesday at TCBY...

Fritz - I just quit my membership 2 days ago! :(

poo. sometimes injuries really make me crazy. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this, especially with everything right around the corner. Do you do any massage therapy? It might help calm down and realign scar tissue from the healing that has been going on and give you more flexibility to work with. I know you know a lot more about this stuff than I do, but usually a good foam roll or deep tissue massage really helps me when I know it is muscular. I have a massage therapist that is really good. She's worked with the olympic ski team before, and she knows her stuff. Just let me know if you'd like. I guess, it is the only help I know to offer. sorry :(

I'd still recommend some light lifting to get the blood flowing/break up scar tissue, although you probably need to wait a few days.

I'm impressed that you x-trained, I would have gone home and watched netflix for an hour.

Good call stopping the run early, I hope your hamstring heals quickly! Keep taking care of it and hopefully next weekend is still in your plans

From prestonmadera on Wed, Jun 06, 2012 at 20:08:08 from 24.10.186.194

Sorry to hear about your run. All I can add is try to keep it positive, that usually helps me a bit.

If your down this way stop by and I'll work on it for you.

From Kelli on Wed, Jun 06, 2012 at 21:50:27 from 67.172.235.55

Did someone say ice cream? I heard it calling my name.

Stupid twinge from yesterday causing pain still today. CRAP. I do think ellipticals are very good are loosening the legs up, so glad you did some of that!

From Hamdog Alum on Wed, Jun 06, 2012 at 21:52:02 from 71.82.247.163

Andrea really sorry to hear about the frustrating hamstring pain. I think you'll be fine if you really take it very easy. Rest up and let your hard work over the past couple months carry you through the race. There's always another 5K around the corner. The 1/2 champs is still there for you.

From MarkP on Wed, Jun 06, 2012 at 21:57:24 from 75.162.247.151

Suck!

I recall on a run several months ago, I believe we discussed lower back pain issues? Do you think they are related?

Check this out and get well soon!
