Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc. 

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - 2 miles around the block then yoga. It's just so weird...my left leg feels great but my right leg is so achy and worn out. When I'm running, there is an immediate and constant deep pain in the right glutes and my hamstring feels like it's being pulled. When I'm resting, the pain feels more like it's in the join space and spreads out from there. On a positive light, I only had to take ibuprofen once yesterday where I have been taking it 3x a day...and I do think that the short jog is helping to make it not hurt as much during the day. I think I'll try the elliptical tomorrow and see if I can prevent that glute pain I am getting when I run. 

PM - 30 min of full-body weight training. Rehab exercises at night.

Andrea, I've been following the trials and tribulations of your 'hamstring thingymajig' for some time now and I've been wanting to suggest something - I was reluctant as you appeared to be getting some decent advice and it's not prudent to make suggestions over the internet about injuries etc.

That said, I'm going to chime in. For a good while I've been thinking that the 'problem' has been over analysed and over treated, when I've thought that it was something obvious and simple to treat.

What you said in your log today has incited me to jump-in. I might be wrong, but check out what I'm saying. If I'm right, this only takes 60-90 secs to treat. Plus a couple of trigger points, which only take seconds to sort - they're more to make sure the problem stays away.

I think you might be suffering from piriformis/pyriformis syndrome. Your piriformis might be irritating/trapping your sciatic nerve and causing the problems you're presenting with. Google it - it's very common, especially in men (like Jake) who keep their wallets in their back pockets:) The wallet pushes the piriformis on to the sciatic nerve etc.

It's easy to treat. Lie on your left hand side on a couch and, keeping your hips straight, dangle your right leg off the couch, so your glutei are stretched.

Get Jake/or any person you trust, to press his/their elbow/thumb into your piriformis (firmly but not too hard). This should simulate the pain. The pain will abate after 15-20 seconds, but the position must be held for the full 90 seconds: this resets the piriformis and prevents the problem from returning.

Don't stretch the glutei; relax them. If you stretch them, they spasm and trap the sciatic nerve. Give it a try and see what happens. If it works, I'll advise you on how to keep the problem away.

I might be miles off, but from what you have said today, any PT (who knows their stuff) would go straight in and treat for pirifomis syndrome.

Andrea, Turns out I also have experience with piriformis syndrome. Before I joined the blog back in Oct of '06. I ended up taking about two months off. But what finally helped was going on prednisone for 2 weeks. It was not fun though. I got very moody during the weaning. But after I was done the nerve was no longer inflamed. The pain in fact went away by the second day of treatment.

Thanks guys for your input. I have been trying to massage out the piriformis on a daily basis but may not be approaching it effectively. I'll try this new method. Teena Marie also recommended that drug as well...I'll have to ask the doctor about it. Adam - it sounds like we'll have plenty to talk about on the drive up to Logan!
