Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - 15 minutes worth of planks, probably the most boring workout ever. Luckily I had this article about Kip Litton (marathon fraud?) to keep me entertained.

Went to see Matt this morning. I have already decided that he's an excellent doctor. First of all, he was so thorough and I could just tell that he is going to do everything he can to help me figure out what the problem is. Second of all, he understands sports injuries, was an excellent runner for BYU, and likes to talk about running :) So we took a few x-rays that were clean - no arthritis, a tiny little bump on the femoral head but likely not FAI. He immediately got me in for a hip MRI with contrast.

Results - MRI came out clean. No stress fractures, no bursitis, no major muscle/tendon damage, a little condral labral separation but unlikely that would be the source of pain...so good news there! But still.....why am I in pain?! A sports hernia was thrown out there as a possibility, leg length discrepency, or maybe my body just completely rejected the idea of me thinking about running a marathon this fall! :) I think we'll figure it out in the next few weeks. But what this does mean is that I don't have to worry about causing additional damage to a serious injury and can try to do weight bearing activities, running, etc. Maybe now that I approach it differently and incorporate some specific exercises Matt recommended, this mysterious problem will go away. Part of me feels like a total wimp that I have this pain that doesn't show up as anything in the imaging at all. I know it was good to rule things out, but do I just have a really low pain tolerance or something? Oh well, if that's the case, at least I'll know when something really bad has happened.

The doctor makes all the difference in the world! So glad you found someone that you trust will do everything they can for you. I hope your diagnosis is one that is quickly fixed, cuz you need to get back at it! :)

Yay! Finally some positive news and someone that will work with you and completely understands.

btw - 15 minutes of plank is no joke! Nice work.

Her plank was no joke. I came back from my run, did some pushups, pullups, took a shower, got dressed, grabbed some food... and she was still planking the whole time!

He's a great guy, best of luck on figuring it all out Andrea!

Glad it's nothing serious!! I know how you feel, last fall I was sure I had a stress fracture, got a bone scan and nothing, turned out to be a bad case of shin splints. I was frustrated that I couldn't just run through it, I know plenty of people who do.

I seriously doubt you have a low pain thresh hold based on how you push yourself running, some injuries just really hurt and only you know how bad the pain is! You'll be back at it before you know it.

From Andrea on Fri, Sep 07, 2012 at 17:25:35 from 67.177.11.154

Carina - part of me just can't believe it didn't show anything. I was sure it was a stress fracture...how can I be in this much pain all the time and nothing to show for it? But I know I should see this as a good thing, as long as the pain magically goes away soon!

From Fritz on Fri, Sep 07, 2012 at 17:30:14 from 65.116.116.6

This is great news! If something did show up then I guess you would be able to explain everything but that something could have ended up requiring surgery or a long layoff. Hopefully with some strength training you will be able to ease back into it soon.

From Andrea on Fri, Sep 07, 2012 at 17:41:33 from 67.177.11.154

Yeah, you're right Fritz. Not knowing what's wrong vs. surgery....I'll take not knowing!!

Glad you have found a doctor that you like and trust. :)

Yup, must be a wimp :)

Frustrating nonetheless, but I am so happy they didn't find anything big. Your symptoms were sounding too familiar so I was really worried that you had a my kinda problem.

From SlowJoe on Fri, Sep 07, 2012 at 18:31:10 from 69.131.141.92

I think that's good news. I think! Glad you have at least ruled out some stuff and hopefully you can move forward.

That's funny, my wife and I just read the Kip Litton article a few days ago. So fascinating and confusing and entertaining and sad and funny and pathetic.

From Tara on Fri, Sep 07, 2012 at 20:37:42 from 75.169.151.237

Weird, strange and bizarre. Its almost like in a way, you would want it to show something so then if you name it, you could tame it kind of thing, right? Frustrating, but hopefully it all goes away soon!

From RAD on Mon, Sep 10, 2012 at 19:50:21 from 98.202.23.178

Oh, I'm sorry about the results. I hate it when I'm in horrible pain and then the doctor tells you there is nothing wrong!! At least Matt gave you some good exercises to work on getting rid of the pain, and the MRI to clear everything. Still makes your head spin with crazy, but at least (like you said) you aren't going to really damage something by running.

Okay, I read that article and holy whoa! I have to agree with Slow Joe. I liked the comment in the article about how much time, money and effort it would take to DO it all! Just run it! I was confused, frustrated, entertained and downright laughing at points. I don't get the guy...just give it up already. Anyway, it was the most interesting article I've read in a LONG time!! Almost mentioned it on my blog, but I'm glad you did already and covered my bases :) I should've known you'd be on top of it!
