Finally started learning how to run in '09 after totally botching it up for the 14 years prior and dealing with chronic IT injury...have had zero IT band pain since fall of '09 and have run way more than ever before in my life...loving it.

Personal:

I'm married to Nan Kennard and she kicks my butt at running.  She has beat me handily in every race we have done together except for a downhill mile we did once.  She is my running inspiration.  I'd like to run a marathon with her someday and actually keep up.

Haven't been running this week yet.  My foot is feeling a bit better each day, but I'm glad I'm still resting it.  I'm going to run 2 or 3 times later this week, once I get some other shoes to test out.

I purchased 4 pairs of Inov-8's of various styles and sizes in order to try them on.

Nobody in Colorado sells them, so fortunately Zappos has free shipping both ways and no tax, so I'm just going to try on a bunch and send back all but the best one and then give those a shot.

I got 1 pair today, the Talons.  I think I got them too long, but the problem is all Inov-8's seem to be medium width with no other width options and I have wide feet.   So I ordered longer to see if that would help, but all it does it make them feel like clown shoes.  Taking out the insole seems to help, but I'm not sure there is a really good shoe solution out there for my wide foot that because all the wide shoes I can find all have big raised heals.   I really wish stubbing my toe wasn't an issue because I really love running in my FF's and they fit me perfectly.

I do most of my trail running in Inov-8's, and I'm a fan. My current model of choice is the Roclite 295, which seems to have a slightly wider toebox than most other Inov-8 models I've tried, although it does feel like it has a little extra cushion when compared to my second love, the Inov-8 Flyrocs, where I, too, have just taken the insole out, and the only thing between your foot and the ground is the (rather aggressive) rubber outsole with some pretty good tread.

All that being said, I've put the Roclites through many a mile, including a sub-20 hour 100-miler, and they held up fantastically, by far becoming the best feeling shoes after that long of an event.

Just my $0.02 (from an admittedly biased Inov-8 fan) Good luck...

Thanks for the info. Jun swears by the inov8's and they seem to have the flattest soles of any trail shoe I've been able to find.

One of the pairs I got was the roclite 295...I'm hoping they fit me better than the talon. They look like they have a slightly less aggressive tread than the talon which I think I will like better too...we'll see!

Way to go on a sub 20 hour 100, thats pretty awesome!

A thought: a few friends of mine manage to stay up to date on the latest models of shoes, have been using the roclite 295's for a while, and they said that the newest edition (i think it's black with a gray "INOV-8" stitched into the side) is a little bit narrower in the toe than the 2009 model that I'm still wearing (gray with a little blue on it), so if you're looking for extra toe room, the year-old version might be a better fit.

Thanks for the tip. Now the challenge would be how to find the old version. At a quick glance I can't see anywhere to purchase that version that is in stock. I guess I'll see what I think about the newer model with the insole taken out and see where that gets me. I noticed a huge difference in comfort on the other pair I tried on with the insole taken out.

I got 3 pairs of inov-8's today (see todays post), the roclite 295 is actually surprisingly very roomy in the toe box which I like a lot. I'm just not sure if I like that enough to go with the beefier shoe over the lower profile, lighter, more flexible talon. Do you know anyone who has used the x-talon 212?

From Scott Ensign on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 00:07:33 from 67.41.180.54

the talon 212 looks pretty neat (I just googled it). maybe I can check them out monday if we have time- have a shoe party of sorts. are you running BB in the FF sprints?

From Nevels on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 01:33:43 from 75.143.94.111

I'm not sure if anyone I know uses the X-Talons, but they sound nice...

Another option worth investigating whenever you are in the market again are the Flyroc 310's. Lower profile than the Roclites (not sure about the x-talons...) and pretty flexible due in part to the fact that, for the most part, the only cushion is the rubber outsole.

Good luck picking. My vote goes to the 295's, but I'm very biased and have had relatively decent results with them, but the lower profile of the x-talon does sound tempting. I guess my recommendation would be to go with whichever is more comfortable, since I'm assuming you're looking for a good shoe for those ultra's on your goal list (after hours and hours on your feet, you just want a shoe that feels good and that your swollen feet can still enjoy)

nevels - Your vote won. Thanks for the input. I went with the 295's and tested them on the trail today. They felt great and I think it was the best choice. Very comfortable.

scott- yeah, I'll run in the FF sprints at the Bolder Boulder. I think I'm purposely going to continue not running on the roads at all prior to then, since I've done so good at that so far...I'll probably feel like a fish out of water on Monday running on pavement again though, and I'll probably be really slow since I'm used to 8 min. mile averages being fast.
