Finally started learning how to run in '09 after totally botching it up for the 14 years prior and dealing with chronic IT injury...have had zero IT band pain since fall of '09 and have run way more than ever before in my life...loving it.

I'm married to Nan Kennard and she kicks my butt at running.  She has beat me handily in every race we have done together except for a downhill mile we did once.  She is my running inspiration.  I'd like to run a marathon with her someday and actually keep up.

What a busy day.  Tuesdays are generally pretty packed for me.  I was gone by 7:30 this morning to a breakfast meeting with some investor friends.  Then out previewing houses to buy all day.  I knew if I didn’t get a run in I wasn’t going to have much energy to stay up all night researching which properties to buy.

When I got home at 4:30 I decided to try out a quick run in my new balance 790’s to test them out again.  I had been wearing them all day to brake them in.

I didn’t really like it much…at all…it turns out.  I turned around after less than 1/4 mile and came home to put my FiveFingers on.

Ahhhhhh....freedom.  I really don’t like my toes to be constricted and confined any more when I run.  Now that I'm accustomed to the freedom of bare feet, it turns out its annoying for me to stuff them back in confined spaces.  It just feels so much better when my toes are free to move around at will, and I don’t have to worry about how the shoe may be mes messing with my stride and bio-mechanics.

If I had shoes that had TONS of room to move my toes around, and if the soles were flat with no raised heal, I think that I could get into shoes like that possibly.  But that’s the Five Fingers…so I’ve already got them.

The pair of 790’s I have are just too constricting for me I decided.  Perhaps I just need a wider pair, but I couldn’t find any wider than D.   I’ll still wear them around, they’re ok walking around in.  But I don’t think I’ll run much in them.  I think I’m going to get some VFF treks to use for trail running and I should be all set.  They have similar flexibility and movement as my current FiveFingers, but with a bunch of tread on the bottom to protect the soles better and give traction on gnarly trails.

Today’s run: 5 Miles – 46:19  9:15/mile – HR: 131 avg – ascent/descent: 502 Ft

I was listening to a seminar about being a better landlord during the run…not super exciting…to say the least.

But good information which I really need to implement because I have been kind of a slacker landlord lately.  But it didn’t really get my blood flowing for running fast.  That was good though…my right ankle is still on the mend a bit from my long run Saturday.  My right inside ankle bone was really stiff for a couple days afterward, I think because I kicked it early in the run on accident.  Its feeling much better today, but not 100% yet.

that's my only beef with the 790- not quite wide enough. I have wide feet as well, really need a EE shoe. frustrating because no flats come in widths. I can only find widths in the heavier trainers, like the wave rider.

I am having some trouble with pain on the top of my feet that I think is coming from the shoes being too tight, and also pinching a nerve. I keep the laces loose, but it is still bugging me. so what to do??

FiveFingers! My feet are free in those.

The challenge is building up the strength to run in them a lot longer. I still haven't gotten to the point of feeling comfortable doing lots of mileage every day of the week. Every week I get stronger though I think.

what size foot do you have? my foot measures as a "10" but I always have to go up to an "11" in running shoes due to my weird wide feet and toes. Ihave very stange feet. I got a size 43 I think for the FF sprints, and I wonder if maybe I shouldn't have gone up to a 44, even though they measured my foot as a 42 using their little FF measurer thing. The FFs even feel a little tight. May try a 44 on my next pair. I am going to look into those treks. Nobody here in Logan sells FFs, I got mine at the pedestrian store in Boulder last May right after reading Born to run.

Hmmm You should see my feet! I don't know how I randomly found this blog about feet, but I have really wide feet. I wear mens running shoes to get that lil extra width..I want to try 5 fingers..was going to pick some up today..Thought they would compliment what I'm trying to accomplish with the Zeroed out shoes..Want to run barefoot period as I can't STAND shoes..I wear flip flops in winter. we probably have very similar feet. If I get really wide shoes I go with a 10.5. But mostly I have had to get 11's also. I got the 11 D in the 790's. But they are still too narrow for me to feel great running in them.

I got the 44's in the FF's and I think it is definitely better to get the FF's a little bigger. My friend Danny gets blisters in his FF's and I'm convinced (after seeing him in them compared to me in mine) that its because they are so snug on him. Mine have plenty of room in the toes and the heel.

Missy, I hear you, if it is any consolation I have been told I have the worst possible feet for running and have even been advised to stop running because of them- a high rigid arch so no cushioning, and an extra bone in the feet that shouldn't be there (well, about 5-10% of the population have this extra bone, but it is a nuisance). All the experts told me to run in one pound super cushioned neutral trainers and high arch supports, and I kept getting hurt. Problem is I supinate severely because of my high arch, and no shoe can stop supination, only pronation. So I switched to minimal shoes to let my foot supinate freely and fixed most of my problems. I am up to 14 miles a week int he five fingers and hope to increase that, I just haven't been able to take the leap of faith like Aaron has yet and transition completely! well, that is certainly more info than you wanted :-)

missy - don't worry about barging, its a public blog! If you don't like shoes, you might really like FF's. But its a lot different than running in running shoes, so I wouldn't recommend running too far too soon until you're comfortable and really adjusted to a mid-foot landing stride and your body gets adjusted.

Aaron, I have the 11D in the 790 as well. I am also running in an asics hyperspeed 3 11D. Those are the best light trainers I can find that still give my foot a little room. The asics hyperspped is a great little shoe with almost no heel. only problem is it has this stupid waffle pattern on the bottom that traps road pea grave;. dumb design.

Dang, now I wish I had gotten the 44 in the FF. The salesperson was trying to convince me I was a 42... Well, my NEXT pair will be 44s. The 43 works OK, but I think I could use the extra room. I will pick some up in Boulder in May!

Rooster...So good to hear..sounds like you are headed in the right direction..You are seeing improvement!

I started having foot probs this year...Switched to Zero's in December and they Temporarily made the prob worse, But now that my feet are getting used to it..my foot is improving..KNOCK on Wood!

I have Post-Tib Tendonitis in my Right arch Podiatrist said last week...he got all ORTHOTIC happy on me..and I said...See YA! Well the xrays were still good to get....I know I don't have any stress fractures or whatnot. Have had my foot taped on my runs..foot feels way better! Also have had massage on it..only iced it once..DUH. Hellooo ICE Missy!

Anyhow...I DO want to try the FF's and like you said Aaron..I wont run too far in them.

Oh and Rooster, Runner's Corner in Orem has the FF's..I don't know how close you are..don't know Providence.
