When I got out of my car at Saltair, it felt like I was back in Laramie. I could not believe the wind. I wasn't looking forward to running at all. I attempted to do a warmup, but the wind was so strong I couldn't even run in a straight line. I decided to save my energy for the race. Luckily, the wind seemed calmer as we started the race. I met up with Bruce at the starting line and we decided to run together and treat the first half like a training run. We talked most of the way to the turnaround and I was surprised to see that we were running sub-9s and it felt pretty easy. We picked up the effort a little on the way back and I decided to push the last 2 miles a little more. I finished in 1:21:11 which was faster than I thought I would run. This is also a considerable improvement over the 10k two weeks ago. I averaged over 10 seconds per mile faster today and ran an additional 5k, so I'm pretty happy with that. Progress is always good. If I can stay consistent with training, I know I'll get back to where I was, and hopefully even surpass that! Splits according to my Garmin: 1-8:50 2-8:56 3-8:48 4-8:39 5-8:39 6-8:46 7-8:51 8-8:27 9-8:21 .36- 2:51 Finished up with a 2 mile cool down. |
