I discovered this blog in July 2010 and followed the advice from the blog to gradually improve my distance/speed. I achieved various PR's in 2010/2011. I went back to work part-time in 2012-2015 and switched to mostly running trail runs. When I got prego with my third child in 2016, I stopped running and started work full-time. After a 7 year hiatus, I returned to running in 2022. I have alot of work to do to get back in shape, but looking forward to the challenge!

Yesterday's 10 tempo run wore me out! How I felt afterwards was just as bad, if not WORSE, than after I ran 19-20 miles. My guess is that it was mainly the last two miles when I did 7:39 and 7:35... I think that was in the anaerobic mode for me. I'm thinking I had major lactic acid build up afterwards. That's the only thing I can think... because 10 miles is normally not that big of deal for me.
I'm a little confused about what to do the next two weeks leading up to my marathon. This is my first taper. I've read so many different theories... I don't know if I should run fewer days a week than usual but keep it at 6-8 miles each day that I do run... or to run 5-6 days but only 3-5 miles each day... |

7 miles at 6 pm. It was raining. Major cramps on theleft side of my stomach the entire run. It was especially bad the last two miles. Didn't stop, though. Nope. The mantra of the run today was "Pain is just weakness leaving your body." This happens often when I run at night and never in the morning.

6.4 miles this morning. Temp was in the 40's and it was windy. I was pretty comfortable with what I wore - capris, technical tee, jacket, gloves, headband and hat. I'm still trying to figure out what works for me in cold weather.

6.4 miles at 5:30 pm. Splits (7:41, 7:40, 8:05, 8:15, 8:05, 8:10, 7:19 pace for last .4)
I started out faster than I had planned and it's kinda funny why. At the beginning I had to cross some traffic and get on another sidewalk. I was paying attention to the cars so I didn't notice there was another runner on the sidewalk that I nearly ran into as I got there. It was a tall, maybe mid-twenties guy who looked like he ran alot. By that, I mean that he had big calf muscles, was wearing short running shorts and a runner watch.
So he passed me going fairly fast and I thought I'd match his pace and hang back about 20 yards behind him. He seemed to be going 7:45 pace. I figured I would hang with him until the end of this street until I turned on another street. But after about a half mile of this, he started wavering his pace slowing down and speeding up again. Then he ran into a small tree branch. He clearly wasn't paying attention to what was in front of him. It was kinda funny. I started thinking that maybe this wasn't his real pace... maybe he was just going this pace to ... impress me? maybe? Hmmm... as I was considering this... He had an ankle problem and moved into the grass. It looked kinda fake. Poor guy.
So I continued with the 7:45 pace for 2 miles and then I considered whether to turn around and go back home continuing that same pace the whole way (4 miles total).... or slow down and do my 6.4 mile route that I had planned. I decided to do the longer route. |

9.3 miles this morning with my group. Splits (8:48, 8:51, 8:48, 8:55, 8:05, 7:50, 8:10, 8:13, 7:59, 7:09 pace for last .2 mile)
It was so cold!! 35 degrees. Somehow it's supposed to warm up to 68 today... I find it facinating that the temperature can change this much in one day.
Anyways, back to the run... Started out with Brenda and she wanted to stick to 8:45 pace because her race is next weekend too. She also wanted to only do 8 miles so she turned to go back at 4 miles. I was thinking I'd do 10 and I'd speed up after she left. Then I ran into Laura at 4.6 miles and she was on her way back to the store doing an 8:00ish pace so I just went with her.
I never warmed up. My legs felt soooo heavy!!! I wore tights and Laura said she never races in tights because she thinks they slow her down. She says she'll wear shorts unless it's below 30 degrees. Hmmm... I don't know about that. I'm relunctant to try something new on race day. I so hope it's not this cold next weekend. Coach said this is perfect marathon tempature but I don't think it is for me. I think perfect for me would be in the low 60's. |
