Running Accomplishments:

I started running in 2008 while I was a stay-at-home-mom.  I discovered this blog in July 2010 and followed the advice from the blog to gradually improve my distance/speed.  I achieved various PR's in 2010/2011.   I went back to work part-time in 2012-2015 and switched to mostly running trail runs.   When I got prego with my third child in 2016, I stopped running and started work full-time.   After a 7 year hiatus, I returned to running in 2022.  I have alot of work to do to get back in shape, but looking forward to the challenge!

6 miles at Trinity River at 6:30pm with Ashley and Wendy.  Average pace=8:12/m.  Fastest mile = 7:45

I missed 2 weeks of running due to several things that happened all at once.  First, we had a death in my husband's family... The funeral was out of town.

Second, I had to clean house and cook for our entire family to come to our house for my son's 2 year birthday party.  (It sounded like a good idea 6 weeks ago... HA!)  During this weekend, my in-laws stayed two nights with us.  I didn't get any babysitting to help me prepare for any of that so I was very busy getting my house ready.

Third, we finally found out about the Italy job my husband was being offered... If we take the job, it will be a pay cut!  We decided that we are not willing to do that... so much for changing my name to ItalyLindsey...  oh well.

And finally, and ironically, forth, the day after we found out we will not be moving to Italy a friend that I used to work with called me to inform me that my old manager was hiring and he wanted me to apply.  (I worked in procurement on the F-35 program at Lockheed Martin).  I have been a stay-at-home mother for 4 years.  Money is getting really tight here because inflation is going up faster than my husband's salary.  My husband just told me that I couldn't buy new running shoes for a couple weeks because bills were tight.  Ok... now, wait a sec...  I am willing to cut back on many things so that I can stay home with my kids but, I draw line at "can't afford running shoes"...  So I sent my resume in.  I had a phone interview and it's looking like I've got the job.  Possibly I'll start in 3-4 weeks (bureaucracy...).  So I'm preparing to get my kids into daycare for the first time in their lives.  Next week they are going to 3 days a week to get them acclimated before I go back to work full time.

So huge life change is coming.  It was a hard decision but I think it is the right time for us.  We just can't afford for me to stay home any longer.   This is going to be doubling our income almost instantly.  This evaporates so much stress in our lives.  We're also going to be able to do fun things like go on vacations.  I can afford to run more races.  We can afford to do fun things with the kids on the weekends.

Now I've got to figure out how to balance running, working and kids.  I'm sure I can do it.  Lots of other people do.  I'm actually looking forward to the challenge!

I've got a 10k this weekend.  Considering the lack of fitness that I'm in right now, I'm just going to be happy with a 8:00 pace.  It's a hilly course.  I think I'll sign up for a bunch of 10k's and 5k's and just work on improving at that for a while.

Wow...It feels like I read half your life story in this one blog entry! I don't know if I should say "sorry" or "congradulations". I won't go into detail about how important I believe it is for kids to have their mom at home (I'm sure you've struggled with that issue)but I'm glad your financial burdens will be relieved. The one suggestion I will give you is to hire someone to do your housework! This is the one thing that will rob your family of lots of time and cause a lot of conflict...I'm serious!!!

Yeah, it was a hard decision. I've been struggling with this issue for the last few months. This isn't the first time a job offer has been presented.

Ideally, I would have liked to stay home for another 2 years at least. However, the money has been getting tight and the stress levels have been going up. It's been one of the big reasons I haven't been running consistently. I guess that's why I felt the need to write about it here on the running blog.

Running is very important to me. I think it makes a better person, mom and wife. One of my big goals for myself is to be a life long runner. One of my big goals for my sons is to show them an active mother so I get them interested in leading active lives themselves. I've been really worried that going back to work will make my life so hard that I won't have time or energy to run like I have been.

I realized that this is just a mental issue. I've been through hard times and I've accomplished things during them that seem impossible when I look back at it. The only way I've been able to do that is by focusing on my goals and believing that if I keep going in the right direction, I'll get there... and also cutting myself a break if I get off track temporarily. In my experience the road to success is not always a perfectly straight line... you have to stay focused and reevaluate your progress repeatedly, making adjustments as you go along.

I think running is an analogy for life. I've been in a race and started thinking that it was too hard and I couldn't maintain... I've come to notice that when the negativity takes over your brain, you've lost. Sometimes the difference between a great race and a disappointing race is how well you react to the negative thoughts when you start noticing them. If you can turn them around and start looking for the positive and optimistic, you can rebound and finish stronger than you thought possible. Same with life.

I know I'm not the only one to struggle with these issues of balancing life and running. It helps me to write about it and to read about how other people do it. I love this blog!

Wow, as I read your post I can feel your hardship. It sounds like you are a great mom. Good luck with everything! Hope your kids adjust to daycare.

Hope the new job works out, the kids will adjust just fine I bet. I just changed jobs and took a big pay cut so my wife may be working in the future as well. Millions of kids go to daycare and turn out great!
